Everett couldnât care less about curiosity and gossip. His concerns were far more immediate.
âHey, youâre not mad at me over this whole mess, are you?â he asked tentatively.
She didnât reply.
âJeffrey is always so impulsive and heâs a man who speaks before he thinks like heâs never grown up.
Donât be mad, okay? He picked on your friend, but Iâll make it right.â
Dorothy couldnât help but smile at the hasty earnestness in his eyes.
âI never said Iâd drag you into this! I know my bestie. She can handle herself.â
With a mouth like Karenâs, she could run circles around Jeffrey in a verbal showdown.
The moment Everett mentioned he was treating her to dinner, Karen was all in.
Who could say no to a feast of delicacies?
And Everett was nothing if not sincere, even arranging a limo to pick her up from the hotel.
Holding a bag of groceries and stepping inside, Karen gave a dry smile, âJust swung by a fruit stand. I
couldnât understand a word they were saying so I just grabbed what I could recognize. Canât visit a
patient emptyâhanded, right?â
She knew all about proper etiquette!
With a sigh, Dorothy laughed, âI could get used to the sudden etiquette of yours.â
Karen squinted playfully and strolled over to Everettâs hospital bed, âMr. Lopez, feeling better?â
âYeah,â Everett nodded.
âGood, good. With you looking after Dorothy, I can head back home without worrying. Otherwise, my
brother-â
Karen caught herself midâsentence, slamming the brakes on that thought.
âItâs fine. I know heâs good to Dorothy,â Everett smoothly carried on the conversation.
She gave an awkward laugh, âDonât get it twisted, Mr. Lopez. Itâs all oneâsided. Dorothy never said yes.
Her heartâs always been with you.â
âKaren!â Dorothy couldnât bear it any longer. Fearing Karen might let slip something even more
untoward, she quickly cut in, âEverett was thinking of showing you around Swevia Country. Interested?â
Karen was about to agree when she hesitated.
.âWhoâs the guide? Itâs not Jeffrey, is itâ¦?â
âItâs not him,â Everett assured her with a wry smile. âDonât worry.â
âThank goodness! A little sightseeing before I head back sounds perfect. Thanks, Mr. Lopez. Iâll go with
it as long as the guide isnât Jeffrey
Before Everett could respond, his phone rang.
All eyes turned as the caller ID popped upâit was Jeffrey.
Everett answered and could clearly feel Jeffrey was outside, for the whoosh of wind was audible over
the line.
âEverett, my folks called and they need me/back home. Looks like youâve got things under control here
so I can give Kevin a hand at the office.â
âSure, Iâll arrange the flight,â Everett responded with a grave tone.
Jeffrey took a drag of his cigarette, âYou sound weird. Whatâs up? Youâre not with Dorothy, are youâ¦?â
âShe brought Karen over for a meal at the hospital.â
âKarenâs with you?â
âYeah.â
âIâm on my way.â
With that, Jeffrey hung up.
Everett tried calling back, but Jeffrey, as if anticipating what he was going to say, stubbornly refused to
pick up.
Dorothy, noticing Everettâs change in demeanor, arched an eyebrow, âWhatâs up?â
âJeffreyâs coming over. Iâve got someone trying to intercept him.â
âWhy stop him?â Dorothy asked, puzzled..
Everett glanced at Karen, who suddenly got it and quickly waved her hands, âNo need! Mr. Lopez,
Jeffrey and I just like to ruffle each otherâs feathers. Itâs not like we canât even be in the same room! Iâm
still willing to share a meal with the guy, given his cute face.â
