â
He could only think of one thing the Lopez family was truly missing children.
âItâs not about wanting,â Jonathan argued, his voice firm with conviction, âSince the kids are Lopezâs
bloodline, so itâs my responsibility to bring them home, instead of letting them suffer out there with
Dorothy!â
He hadnât planned on keeping this from Everett. Of course, it wouldnât have stayed a secret for long. He
just hadnât felt ready to broach the subject.
âWhether itâs suffering or blessing, thatâs up to the kids to decide, not you.â
âTheyâre too young to know whatâs good or bad for them. Surely they want to be with their mom. But
we, the Lopez family, canât accept Dorothy, nor can we let our lineage falter outside!â
Everett tugged at his chapped lips. âTheyâre not outside with me here.â
He never saw the children being raised by Dorothy as âsufferingâ. They were clearly wellâcared for
adorable, healthy, and incredibly sensible.
As their father, he felt a deep gratitude for Dorothy, and it pained him to see her struggle.
âNonsense!â Jonathan started to scold, but then hastily softened his tone as recalling his sonâs
condition, âEverett, you know what I care about! If you really wish for the best for the kids, you should
have them back to us. Who knows how Dorothy might raise
them!â
âDorothy has never taught them to resent the Lopez family. Your fear isnât
necessary.â
âI feared? We, the Lopez family, didnât even know about the kids before!â Jonathanâs voice deepened
with emotion, âYes, I admit that your mother made a mistake and that I didnât expect Heather to be so
brazen. From now on, weâll make sure you have nothing to do with Heather. But Dorothy⦠she canât be
part of the Lopez family.â
âWhy?â Everett clenched his teeth, attempting to sit up despite the pain.
After several failed attempts as he was restrained by the wires of the monitoring equipment, he simply
unplugged the cords.
Suddenly, the machine let out a shrill, buzzing alarm.
Jonathan hurried over startled. âWhat are you doing? Have you lost your mind?â
But Everett seemed deaf to his fatherâs words. His eyes fixed on Jonathan. Blood seeped frantically
from his wound, yet he didnât.
even wince.
âI asked you why. Why canât Dorothy be part of the Lopez family?â
âIt just canât happen! Now, lie down!â Jonathan was genuinely frightened. His composure shaken, as he
rushed out to call for the doctor. âQuincy! Quincy! Come quickly, heâs bleeding!â
Quincy was in her office flipping through a medical journal when she heard the commotion and dashed
out.
âWhat happened?â
âQuick, hurry! Everett just pulled out his monitor, and heâs bleeding!â
Quincy frowned and rushed to the patientâs room.
âMr. Lopez, what have you done?â She reached to remove the bandage and check his wound, but he
dodged her.
âItâs nothing. Iâm fine.â
âYouâre bleeding out, and how can it be nothing?â Quincy had never seen anyone so reckless with their
life. âWhereâs Ms.
Sanchez?â
Everett looked at her and asks, âWhat do you need her for?â
âBecause you wonât settle without her!â Quincy had him figured out, âMr. Lopez, either cooperate with
me right now, or Iâm calling Ms. Sanchez to handle you!â
âIâm serious!â She was already pulling out her phone.
Everettâs demeanor softened slightly, but his brow remained furrowed. âDonât tell her!â
