Dorothy could hardly believe the man in front of her was the same person she knew. It was as if heâd
been possessed by some mischievous spirit!
If anyone from the Lopez Corporation saw him now, lounging about like some kind of loafer, theyâd rub
their eyes in disbelief.
Come on, this was Mr. Lopez, the embodiment of selfârestraint and icy composure, who had managed
to stay scandalâfree despite the turbid world of business that he thrived in!
âIs this all you think about when Iâm around?â
âWith you by my side, itâs impossible to think of anything else.â
Just as Dorothy was about to respond, there was another knock on the door.
She opened the door and found Jonathan standing there. His lips twitched into a faint, emotionless
smile upon seeing her. âHowâs Everett doing?â
âDr. Quincy said heâs doing great. Heâll be off the monitors by tomorrow.â Of course, Dorothy didnât
mention the little incident of Everett unstitching his wound.
They were all adults, and they all knew what thatâs aboutâ¦
Jonathan nodded, then spoke in a hushed tone, âCould you please spare us a few minutes? I need to
have a word with him alone.â âSure.â
Without suspicion, Dorothy moved to leave.
Everett suddenly spoke up from the hospital bed, âThereâs nothing that she shouldnât hear.â
He was done with their misunderstandings. It was better to let her hear things firsthand than to leave
her guessing.
Dorothy was a very insecure woman. The more he kept from her, the more unsettled sheâd feel.
Jonathan was no doubt not fond of such an attitude of his sonâs.
Only that decisive, ruthless Everett could navigate the battlegrounds in the commercial world, not some
doting lover distracted by a womanâs presence. Didnât he just put a target on his back?
Dorothy noticed the displeasure on Jonathanâs face, and she didnât want to cause a rift between the
father and the son. She offered a smile and said, âEverett, I should check on Karen anyway. She did
come with me, after all. I need to make sure sheâs
settled in.â
Before Everett could object, Jonathan was already agreeing, âIâll have someone escort you.â
âThank you.â
Dorothy nodded and left the room..
As soon as the door closed, the smile that had graced Everettâs handsome face vanished, replaced
once more by his usual stoic
and noble demeanor.
âWhy avoid her?â
âBecause sheâs not part of the Lopez family!â Jonathanâs response was blunt, leaving no room for
Everett to harbor any delusions. of Dorothy being accepted by them.
Everettâs eyes narrowed as he regarded his father. âWas there a bargain between you and Dorothy?â
âNothing at allâ
âThatâs impossible.â Everett knew well both Dorothy and his own parents, who never showed mercy
easily. âDorothy must have given up a lot for you to let her in and see me.â
Jonathanâs face grew stern, âDonât forget whose son you are! Youâve been raised by the Lopez family,
and everything you have is built on the foundation of the familyâs centuryâlong legacy. And now, youâre
questioning your father over a woman?â
âI do belong to the Lopez family, but I also do belong to Dorothy.â
âAnd what are you to Dorothy?â Jonathanâs voice was sharp with severity. âThe fact is, youâve invested
more emotion and time in her than she ever has in you! Sheâs always been holding something back
from you!â
Otherwise, they wouldnât have divorced in the first place.
âI donât want to argue about this. I just want to know what was her bargain.â Everett wasnât interested in
those analysis.
He understood what Jonathan said, but none of those outweighed his willingness to yield to his heart.
âIâve told you. There was nothing!â
Everett looked straight into his fatherâs eyes, piercing through the pretense. âItâs about the kids, isnât it?
You want Abigail and Langston back to the Lopez family.â
