Just another night in the city, Karen was tossing and turning on the plush hotel bed and was unable to
find sleep.
Her mind was spinning with how sheâd break the news to Kenneth, who was still waiting on his
passport, all eager to come over to Swevia. What a mess it would be when he arrived to find Everett
and Dorothy were doing just fine. Heâd be so embarrassed.
After much deliberation, Karen forced herself to dial Kennethâs number.
He picked up a few rings later.
âI was just getting Langston ready for his bath when I Heard the phone. Whatâs up? Everything okay
with Dorothy?â
âYeah, sheâs fine,â Karen murmured, her lips pursing in discomfort. âUm, Kenneth, howâs the passport
thing going?â
Kenneth paused as he sensed something amiss. âIâve submitted the application and taken a new
photo. You knew it, but why asking again?â
âI just think⦠maybe you should hold off on coming here. Dorothyâs doing well, and the Lopezes
havenât given her any trouble.â
There was silence on the other end. Though Kenneth said nothing, Karen could feel his
disappointment.
âKenneth, Dorothy said sheâd be back in a month. Save yourself the trip, okay? Iâm planning to stay
until sheâs settled, and then Iâll head back too.â
Both cousins knew that no one would dare hurt Dorothy anymore ever since Everett has been brought
back to consciousness.
It took an eternity before Kennethâs voice came through softly. âAlright, I wonât come. Just take care of
her.â
âI will.â
After hanging up, Karen felt something heavy in her mood, something uneasy and sad she couldnât
quite pinpoint.
She flicked through her phone and looked for ordering some beer to help her sleep. But the foreign
script was indecipherable, and she didnât speak a word of Sweviaâs language. Heck, she was even
afraid of getting lost just going downstairs.
Something slipped into her mind. She put on the slippers, dashing out and banging on the door two
rooms down from hers.
The door swung open to reveal a man fresh from the shower. Annoyance etched into his features..
âWhat is it for?â
Jeffrey had just stepped out of the bathroom, draped in the hotelâs white robe. His hair still dripping
when Karenâs relentless knocking nearly gave him a heart attack.
âI need a drink. Go get me some.â
âAm I your servant?â No one have had the gall to boss him around other than Everett!
Karen batted her eyelashes to show off her innocence. âI never said that! Everett asked you to look
after me, and I need a little liquid courage to help me sleep. But I canât buy it myself, so youâre my only
hope! Youâre not going to let me down, are you?â
âI am.â With that, Jeffrey slammed the door shut.
Karen stood fuming by the rejection. âHey! Where have your gentlemanliness gone to? No wonder you
and Heather are two peas. in a pod â both lacking morality, pfft!â
She had barely turned to leave when Jeffreyâs door swung open again. This time he was dressed in
casual wear.
His handsome face seemed helpless. âI was just changing clothes. What, you expected me to go out in
a towel?â
âNext time, could you wait until youâve got the whole story before jumping to conclusions?â Jeffrey
almost lost his sanity to this. woman. âYouâre arbitrary to judge people based on your own
assumptions.â
Karen stiffened her neck, huffing. âOh, so how youâre lecturing me? And what about all those times you
snapped at Dorothy without getting the full story? You were the arbitrary one who believed that Dorothy
stole Heatherâs man?â
