âIâm fine, really.â Dorothy knew Everett must be worried sick about her, so she walked over to Dr.
Quincyâs side and whispered, âIf he asks about me, just tell him Iâm doing great! I donât want him to
worry.â
Dr. Quincyâs lips curled into a smile, revealing two charming dimples that made her look like a college
student rather than a seasoned physician.
âYou two are really a pair. He told me the exact same thing.â
Dorothy paused, a flicker of concern crossing her face. âIs he okay, though? Heâs not hiding anything
serious from me, is he?â
Dr. Quincy patted her shoulder gently. âDonât worry! Heâs fine. I wouldnât tarnish my reputation by letting
something happen to one of my patients. But you need to take your leg seriously. Mr. Lopez is right;
you need to take care of yourself.â
âItâs just a fracture. I had surgery and everything.â
âBut looking at your wounds, it seems like there might be an inflammation. Did you leave the ward and
come here right after your surgery?â Dr. Quincy always had an eye to detect these tricks.
Dorothy showed an embarrassed, sheepish grin. âI was worried about himâ¦â
âI understand. But Mr. Lopez is out of danger now, so itâs time to focus on your own recovery.â Dr.
Quincy moved behind her wheelchair and began to push it forward. âLetâs head over to the consulting
room. Iâll take a look at you.â
Dorothy knew it would be foolish to argue now.
âThank you, Dr. Quincy.â
âYouâre welcome.â Dr. Quincy chatted as she pushed the wheelchair along. âHonestly, seeing how you
two caring for each other, itâs touching. It makes me believe that love really does exist in this world.â
Dorothy glanced at her sideways. âYouâve never been in love?â
Dr. Quincy made a face. âIâm a med student. My life revolves around the lab and the clinic. The only
men around are either my professors or fellow doctors with a similar career drive. Nothing would ever
happen. But during my time in the clinic, Iâve seen plenty of longâterm couples who, when faced with
life or death, seem to value money over everything else.â
Dorothy blinked, deliberating her words.
âThey hesitate to spend money on their partnerâs treatment?â
âYes! Some could have paid a little more for a cure but chose to give up instead.â Dr. Quincy sighed.
âThatâs why Iâm terrified of marriage. The dark side of human nature is just too frightening.â
Dorothy wanted to express her shock, but then she thought of Maxton. He was exactly the kind of
person Dr. Quincy described. His mother was inpatient for years, yet he never paid the medical bills, let
along visiting her in the hospital.
If it hadnât been for Everett, she might neither have believed in love.
âBut seeing the love between you and Mr. Lopez, how heâd risk his life for you⦠He seems like such a
hero.â
â
âEverettâs actually quite silly.â Dorothy thought of how he looked at her the powerful CEO of Lopez
Corporation, yet always timid and humble as he saw her and she couldnât help but smile.
â
His cautious tenderness was probably something only she got to see.
âYou call him silly but watch out. I might just spill the beans to Jonathan!â Dr. Quincy teased, clearly
unaware of the complicated. relations. She still regarded Dorothy the recognized daughterâinâlaw of
the Lopez family.
