Langston eyed him suspiciously. âArenât you afraid that I might access the backâend, erase your data,
and throw the Lopez Corporation into chaos?â
Getting into the CEOâs backâend was like getting the keys to the kingdom. All the important files and
topâsecret data were laid out clear as day.
Everettâs crisp and magnetic voice chuckled, âGo ahead, delete away. Itâs all going to be yours anywayâ
âWhat?â Langstonâs mind raced to a TV drama he had seen recently, and he smirked, âJust wait until
youâve got a new wife and kids. You wonât be saying that then!â
Everett smiled indulgently, tousling his sonâs hair.
âill only ever have your mom as my wife. Or else, Iâll end up a lonely old man.â
Looking at his bright and adorable son, Everett felt he shouldnât be too greedy. The idea of having a
pair of children with Dorothy was something he hadnât allowed himself to dream of in the four years
since his divorce.
The more he had, the more he feared it was all just a pipe dream.
Dorothy emerged from the restroom to find the father and son, sharing one beaming smile, laughing
heartily
When was the last time she had seen Langston genuinely smile?
Ever since he had started to look more and more like Everett, and she had sent him abroad, their
meetings had been few and far between. Now, with his dad, his happiness was tangible, even his
laughter was bright and openâhearted.
This was the innocence a child deserved to have.
If it werenât for Everettâs presence, she would have loved to capture her sonâs smiling face on her
phone.
âFeeling alright?â Everett noticed her first and rose to join her,
Tm fine.â Dorothy sat back down, glancing at him, Tm almost done here. Can I see him now?â
âSure, 111 drive you over tomorrow morning.â His word was his bond.
Dorothy didnât object. It was late, and an evening visit wouldnât be appropriate.
âThen Iâll be on my way.â
As she stood to leave, Langston clutched his stomach and groaned, âOuch. My stomach suddenly
hurts so much!â
Dorothy had never seen her son like this and, in her panic, almost forgot to hide her concem from
Everett. She quickly turned back to Langstonâs side.
âWhere does it hurt? Let me see!â
Langston looked up with a pitiful expression, âI think itâs because I sneakily drank a cold soda today.
Ms. Sanchez, can you rub my tummy?â
Dorothy instinctively reached out, then caught herself with Everett still nearby.
Was she too anxious for just an âMs. Sanchezâ?
âUh, why donât you ask your dad to do it?â
Everett, taken aback, caught Langstonâs cue and spoke with feigned difficulty. âBut Iâve got a video call
starting soon, Dorothy. Could you look after my boy for a bit?â
Dorothy, already reluctant to leave her son, eagerly agreed upon finding an easy out, though she
feigned reluctance for appearanceâs sake.
Is that okay? The boy doesnât really like me muchâ
âJust for a little while, I take over after my call.â
âAlright then, Iâll do you this favor! But make it quickâ
Dorothy stood up, lifted her son into her arms, and walked toward his bedroom.
Langston wrapped his arms around his momâs neck, sneakily grinning and winking at Everett as they
left.
