Dorothy was fuming, her usual filter gone in the heat of the moment as she snapped back, âIt was you
who insisted I shouldnât call you Mr. Lopez!â
That comment hit Everett just as she intended.
âWhat was our relationship back then, and what is it now?â
âYouâ¦â
Everett sat there with a businesslike demeanor, as if the one causing a scene was Dorothy herself!
âMs. Sanchez, we are discussing professional matters. If you have any personal issues youâd like to
address with me, we can talk after hours.â
âI have nothing personal to discuss with you!â Dorothy glared at Everett, her words bitten off sharply,
âSince the decision has already been made, why not just have HR inform me of my transfer? Dragging
me to the CEOâs office like this is bound to cause misunderstanding, Mr. Lopez.â
She emphasized the last words with particular force.
Everett didnât seem bothered. He just pursed his lips in a slight smile. âWhat kind of
misunderstanding?â
Seeing him play dumb, Dorothy decided to lay it all out. âThat you may have a secret crush on me!â
âOh.â To her surprise, Everett suddenly stood from his chair, his long strides bringing him right up to
her.
His towering height alone was enough to impose a heavy sense of pressure!
âWhy are you getting so close to me?â
âI believe the matter you mentioned deserves some clarification.â Everettâs eyes locked onto her face,
his voice deep and haunting, every word a deliberate hammer to her heart. âThis is no
misunderstanding.â
Dorothy waited for Everett to continue.
âI do have a crush on you. Havenât you known that all along?â
Dorothy ran from the CEOâs office in utter disarray.
Even in the elevator, she had to press a hand to her chest to remind herself she was still alive!
What had Everett just said?
She must be hallucinating. Yes, that had to be it!
âHey! Ms. Sanchez!â
Just as the elevator reached the lobby, she ran into Austin, who was on his way out.
Dorothy felt as if her soul had left her body but stopped when he caught her arm.
âWhatâs wrong with you?â
âNothing, nothing at all.â
Austin looked her up and down, raising an eyebrow. âWhat did Mr. Lopez say to you in private? Did he
offer you a sweet deal? Ms. Sanchez, Iâve been good to you at East Star Enterprises. Donât forget
about me if youâve got promoted!â
Dorothyâs face stiffened, at a loss for any response other than nodding.
âYou could have told me you knew Mr. Lopez! I thought youâd never met him.â
âWe are not close⦠Whatâs the point in mentioning it? Itâs just embarrassing myself, Dorothy tried her
best to downplay any connection between them,
Thankfully, it seemed Austin wasnât reading too much into it
âWhy so modest? Mr. Lopez came out to the waiting room for you. That means he values you! Ms.
Sanchez, donât say I
didnât warn you. With a connection like that, you should think about how to leverage it! The Lopez
Corporation is a goldmine, and just a flick of Everettâs pinky could set you up with a life of luxury, so
donât be so naive!â
Austin thought Dorothy had been too stubborn when Lane showed interest, always harping on about
being married, and now that Everett turned out to be an old friend of hers. With a possible link, she
shouldnât waste such an opportunity!
