Candice's POV
Did Alpha Devon just ask me if I was okay? And then ask if I worked here. And I detected softness in his voice.
Of course, his aura is suppressing but the love I have for him is greater than that aura. He is so handsome, I can't help but fall harder. I danced into Susan's office to find her in the corner, looking pale as a white sheet.
"Suz, what's up?" I asked carefully. "Are you okay?"
"I... I'm fine." She whispered. "Has he left?"
"Who? Alpha Devon?"
She nodded too quickly. I laughed softly. Was she afraid of him?
"Are you afraid of him? What's there to be afraid of? He's just like you and I and everyone else." I praised.
She glared at me. "You only say that because you're obsessed with him."
I gasped aloud, touching my chest as if I was hurt. "Obsessed?"
"Mmhmm." She nodded.
"I am not obsessed, obsessed is such a strong word. You could say, I find him attractive."
"What's the difference?" She asked. I giggled. Susan can be such a sweetheart. I can't believe she hid in that corner just because she was afraid of Devon. The man had even shown care to me all because he saw me pacing the hallway.
"You seem happier than usual, does this have to do with seeing Alpha Devon?"
I giggled even more. "You can't be so sure. Maybe I won a lottery."
"Ha." She scoffed. "Like that stands a chance of being spoken to by Alpha Devon."
"Okay, you're right." I agreed.
Susan shook her head. "Yet you say you're not obsessed? What kind of psycho woman would be so excited about being spoken to by a man if he isn't the man she's obsessed over?"
"I don't know what you're talking about." I defended. "I was only pacing the corridor since you both were taking too much time."
"What were you talking about anyway?"
She stared at me and removed her gaze. "Random stuff."
That was a lie. If Susan wanted to lie, she didn't stare at one in the face.
"You're lying to me, Suz," I said, staring directly at her. I didn't know why but seeing her lie somehow began to make me scared. What did Devon talk to her about that she didn't want to tell me?
"Talk to me, Suz." I urged. She was arranging her desk which wasn't scattered and I held her hands to stop her.
"Susan!" I whined.
She sighed. "Candice, forget about that man. If you want, to pursue him on your own, don't involve me. Whatever the Alpha and I discuss away from prying eyes and ears is between us alone."
"No third party which means, no Candice." She said, tapping my nose. Argh, I am pissed. Why can't she just tell me? What did they talk about?
"Why don't you want to tell me?"
"Are you deaf or dumb?" She asked. "I just said it's between the Alpha and me alone. Did you see or hear your name among the options of people to tell?"
I frowned. "I'm not deaf, neither am I dumb, do I look like that bitch he brought the other day?"
Susan stared at me. "Candy, don't be so rude!" She scolded. "I didn't even mean dumb in that way, jeez!"
"Oh," I muttered. "Well, whatever you meant."
Perhaps the brat still thinks that Devon cares about her.
"Is she still in the castle with them? I hoped she would have been kicked out by now." I said.
Susan only stared at me. "You can't be so evil and expect Alpha Devon to care about you. Olivia is a sweetheart. She did nothing to deserve the condition she has been put in. Perhaps the goddess wants to repay her years of suffering by letting her meet Alpha Devon."
"Nonsense!" I exclaimed. "That's cock and bull story."
"Suit yourself, Candice." She said. "Forget about all this chit-chat and get to work. It's still working hours and you don't just go on break because I do."
I snickered and left. What could Devon possibly talk to her about that makes her so scared about telling me? It's something she doesn't want me to know. Could it be about me? Or about someone else she doesn't want me to know of?
I walked out of her office and down the corridor to the ward where I had left earlier. It was the same ward where Olivia was brought in. I sneered as I remembered her name. The foolish thing.
Could it be her who Devon came to talk about? Maybe the injection had worn off? Had she been disturbed by the male wolves around the castle? Maybe that's why Devon came back.
But even if she was raped or almost raped, should he care about it? Does he care about her? My fists were balled instantly. He wasn't supposed to care about her.
Grrr.
"How could this be happening? I can't let it happen, I can't let this happen! What if he starts to love her? No!"
"Does this mean I will lose him permanently? I can't, I can't stand seeing that mute thing beside Devon, I cannot."
Susan was behind me before I could stop myself from completing my sentence.
"Candice, you have to be careful. If anything happens to either Olivia or Devon, I won't hesitate to tell everyone it's you." She said.
I laughed lightly. "Come on, I'm not a wicked person. I can't harm someone just because I want something."
Susan's stare was fixed on me. "I've told you. You have to be careful about what you say. The wind carries words."
"Alright, alright." I agreed instantly. If I could make her forget about what I just said, I do know that I would be safe. At least just a little safe is still fine. But it didn't mean I will keep quiet and allow that girl to snatch Alpha Devon from me.
"I won't say anything about Alpha Devon or Olivia," I promised. "And if he chooses Olivia then I will take my mind off him."
Susan smiled again. "That's my girl. Now hurry, we have an emergency."
I followed her out. Of course, I just promised, it's only words. If the wind is looking for words to spread out, let it spread out my faux promise. What I will do is in my mind.
