The Forsaken Codex: Echoes of Doom802 words~5 min read

The shadowy figure smirked, his eyes gleaming with malevolent satisfaction. "Wouldn't you like to know?"

Zariyah's heart raced, her fingers curling into fists at her sides as she glared at the man who stood before her. The night air felt colder now, as if the very forest had recoiled at the presence of this stranger.

"Why do you keep doing this?" she demanded, her voice strong despite the rush of fear creeping through her veins. "What do you want from us?"

The man tilted his head, studying her with an unnerving calmness. "You've already lost one, haven't you?" His voice was smooth, laced with mockery. "How much more can you bear before you break, Zariyah? How many more will you sacrifice to keep your friends safe?"

Her body tensed at the mention of Alicia, the memory of her loss still raw and sharp. But she stood her ground, refusing to let this man, this shadow, have the satisfaction of seeing her falter.

"I won't let you hurt anyone else," Zariyah stated firmly, each word heavy with determination. "Whatever you are, whatever this is, it ends tonight."

The shadow figure chuckled, low and eerie. "You think you can stop me?" He took a step closer, his dark form looming larger in the dim light of the forest. "You can't even protect yourself from me. What makes you think you can protect anyone else?"

Zariyah's gaze never wavered, her body coiled like a spring. "We'll see about that."

In a flash, the man lunged, but Zariyah was quicker, ducking out of the way just in time. Her heart pounded as she spun around, her mind racing for a way to escape-or better yet, to defeat him.

But before she could react, the shadow figure's hand shot out, grabbing her wrist in a vice-like grip. His cold touch sent a shock through her, and for a moment, she felt her strength begin to drain.

"You'll regret this," he hissed, his voice full of venom.

Zariyah's mind flashed to her friends-Mason, Tyler-and the promise she had made to herself. No matter what, she would protect them.

With a forceful tug, she broke free from his grip, stumbling backward. "I'm not done with you," she spat, her anger boiling over.

The shadow figure paused, studying her with an eerie amusement. "Oh, but you are." With a sudden flick of his hand, darkness swirled around him, and in an instant, he vanished, leaving only the cold whisper of the wind behind.

Zariyah stood there, her chest heaving with the adrenaline still coursing through her. The confrontation had ended, but she knew this was far from over. Whatever game this shadow was playing, it wasn't finished. And neither was she.

Zariyah rushed back to camp, her heart racing as she ran through the night. Her breath came out in quick, ragged gasps, her body aching from the sprint. But when she arrived, something felt off. It was too quiet. Too still. The usual rustling of the trees, the hum of the wind-it was all gone.

She barely had time to process the eerie silence before a figure stepped out from behind the trees. Mason. His eyes were hollow, filled with grief, and his face was pale. Zariyah froze in place, scanning the area for Tyler, but he wasn't there.

"Mason? Where were you? Where's Tyler?" She asked, her voice tinged with panic.

Mason's gaze met hers, and his expression twisted in anguish. "Zariyah..." He said her name as if it pained him to speak, his voice faltering. "Zariyah... Tyler-he-"

Suddenly, everything around her seemed to blur, as if the world was being pulled away from her.

Flashback

Mason's P. O. V.

I had barely opened my eyes when I heard the faint whispers. Something was off, so I got up, slipping out of my tent, trying not to make a sound. That's when I saw him-the Romeo himself-walking alone through the night. I couldn't help it. I had to follow.

Where was he even going? I watched him, confused, as he aimlessly wandered, no clear destination in sight. It was like he was just walking for the sake of it.

Then, I saw him step into a clearing. The moonlight highlighted the edge of a cliff. He was walking right toward it, like some reckless idiot, no fear at all.

I stayed hidden behind a tree, not wanting to be seen just yet. He sat down on the edge, staring up at the stars as if they were the only thing that mattered in the world.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" he said, his voice barely a whisper.

He turned his head, catching sight of me. I froze. So much for being unnoticed. He knew I was there.
