5. The Tactician—The Payback

The weight of the General's words settled heavily on Yelee's shoulders. "A tactician must see the stratagem unfold to the end, Yelee. A defeat is an incentive for growth, not an obstacle." She stood before the assembled regiment, their faces a mix of grim determination and apprehension. These were not her trusted companions whose fighting styles she knew intimately, whose energy signatures were as familiar to her as her own heartbeat. These were soldiers, trained and disciplined, but strangers to the arcane flow she understood.

Hesitation gnawed at her. The memory of the cavern, of Arlo's last stand, Colin's final breath, Brenna's sacrifice, was a raw wound still. Going back felt like walking into the jaws of death, dragging these soldiers with her. Owlet of Tempest Crossing—the familiar that was bound to her grimoire, its light still faint, but steady, nudged her to focus on the task ahead.

"Tactician Yelee?" the Sergeant prompted, his voice respectful but firm.

Yelee straightened, pushing the doubt aside. The General was right. The operation's plan was approved for execution. To falter now, to let fear take over, would be to dishonor their sacrifice. She had seen the Scaled Paragon's weakness, a fleeting vulnerability born of its own power. Now, she was provided with the means to exploit it.

"Listen closely," she began, her voice gaining strength as she spoke, her tactical mind asserting itself over her grief. "This is not a desperate charge, it’s a calculated assault. The wyrm is powerful, yes, and its hide is nigh impenetrable. But it has a weakness, a momentary instability in its core just before it unleashes its breath. We strike then. We’ve got one shot at this until the enemy mobilizes with a counter attack, so watch out for my command."

She outlined the plan, drawing everyone’s attention with a projection of an illusionary map, pointing out approach vectors, diversionary tactics, and the precise timing required. Omitting the intricacy of the subtle shifts in the web of energy flows she would monitor, she spoke of a signal at the critical moment. The soldiers listened, eased by an eventual understanding that the plan was not just a desperate assault.

After the initial foiled reconnaissance attempt, the enemy was evidently not anticipating another attack. Yet here she was again. Without meeting a meaningful resistance, Yelee and the soldiers stood at the entrance to the Scaled Paragon's makeshift lair. The air crackled with latent energy, the wyrm's presence a palpable force. Yelee felt the familiar hum of magic, tainted here with the wyrm's twisted power. The floating grimoire pulsed beside her, its light now steady, mirroring her own resolve.

"Remember the timing!" Yelee shouted over the growing roar from within. "Wait for my signal! Archers, be ready! Mages, maximum focus!"

The regiment advanced, a wave of disciplined force. The Scaled Paragon emerged, a terrifying silhouette against the cavern's glow. It roared, a challenge that shook the cave's surroundings.

The battle commenced. Soldiers engaged, drawing the Scaled Paragon's attention, executing the diversionary tactics Yelee had planned. She stayed in the back of the formation, her gaze fixed on the wyrm, her mind open to the energy currents around its massive form. She saw the energy gathering, the immense power flowing inwards as it prepared its devastating breath.

"Now!" The instability flared, a brilliant, terrible light in the Scaled Paragon's core, visible only to her augmented sight. It was the fleeting moment of vulnerability, the dying ember Colin had described.

Yelee roared, channeling her remaining insight into a burst of elemental energy, a flare that shot into the air above her. "Strike at the core! NOW!"

The regiment responded instantly. Archers loosened volleys of specialized, armor-piercing arrows aimed at the wyrm's chest, guided by Yelee's mark. Mages unleashed focused bolts of pure force, their energy directed at the flickering weakness.

The Scaled Paragon recoiled, a shriek of pain tearing through the area. The concentrated attack, hitting the critical point at the precise moment, bypassed its defenses. It thrashed, its breath weapon sputtering, the energy disrupted.

The battle was far from over. From beyond the cavern entrance, the panicked shouts of the Scalespeaker's camp began to echo, followed by the blare of war horns—a frantic, piercing cacophony that signaled a full awakening of the enemy. The Scaled Paragon, though wounded and sputtering, began to regain its terrible focus. Its eyes, now alight with renewed malice, fixed on Yelee.

"Pull back!" Yelee bellowed, her voice strained but firm, overriding the chaotic din. "We’ve done what we can, but we are out of time! Move!"

The regiment, disciplined even in the face of this sudden escalation, began to pull back, their mission accomplished in part. The formidable wyrm was wounded, its scales scored and its power momentarily disrupted, but it was far from dead. Its roars of pain quickly turned to roars of fury as they vanished back into the shadows.

Yelee, watching the regiment press the advantage, felt a surge of a fierce, protective pride in these soldiers, in the plan they had executed. The General was right. Defeat was not the end; it was a terrible, brutal teacher. And she, an arcane tactician, was learning.
