2. The Tactician—The Peril

The narrow pass was choked with the chittering, snarling tide of a Mossfolk swarm. Dozens of them, a brooding wave armed with rusty blades and crude slingshots, surged forward, eager to overwhelm the small group defending the bottleneck. Arlo and Brenna stood ready at the front, their backs to Colin, steel glinting in the torchlight. Behind Colin a young woman named Yelee frowned in concentration. She realized that even the combined might of her group couldn't hold back such numbers indefinitely.

Yelee's mind raced, her gaze sweeping across the chaotic advance. The Mossfolk relied on sheer numbers and reckless momentum. A direct blast wouldn't stop them all, and slowing them would only delay the inevitable. She needed to turn their greatest strength—their eagerness to close the distance—against them.

Her eyes fell upon a passage just ahead of Arlo and Brenna, a crucial choke point in the pass. Here, she thought, this is where we make them pay for every inch. Her hand went to the comforting weight of her grimoire, hovering patiently beside her. Her mind pulsed with tactical insight. She was ready to proclaim an arcane directive—a spell that would alter the flow of battle.

"Hold the line!" Yelee's voice rang out, calm and clear amidst the rising clamor. "Let them come at us!"

Focusing her will, she channeled the insight into the chosen tactical pattern. "Mark this ground!" she commanded, pointing a finger towards the choke point. "Field of Peril!"

Energy shimmered in the air at the designated spot, expanding outwards into a faintly visible sphere. It wasn't a wall or a damaging field, but a zone of heightened awareness, a trap for movement. Within this zone, the very fabric of space seemed to subtly highlight any creature attempting to cross its threshold.

The first wave of the Mossfolk, driven by their momentum, surged into the marked area. The moment their ragged boots crossed the boundary, the still energy flared around them, a silent alarm ringing in the minds of Yelee's allies.

Arlo's eyes, already narrowed in fierce concentration, widened slightly. He saw the Mossfolk male closest to him highlighted by an unseen force, its movement into the zone practically screaming for a response. His axe, instead of waiting for the Mossfolk to fully engage, swung out in a powerful, immediate arc—an opportunity attack, triggered by Yelee's tactical placement. The Mossfolk fell with a squeal.

Beside him, Brenna, her bowstring already drawn, saw a similar highlight around another Mossfolk darting into the zone. Her arrow flew true, catching the creature mid-stride before it could even raise its weapon.

The Mossfolk behind them faltered for a split second, seeing their comrades fall so unexpectedly. However, the pressure from behind was relentless. More of the Mossfolk poured into the Field of Peril, and each one that crossed the threshold became a target. Arlo and Brenna, their awareness alerted by Yelee's magic, reacted instantly, their precise attacks cutting down more of the advancing tide.

Field of Peril wasn't a spell of annihilation, but a tactical enhancement that amplified her allies' readiness. Yelee watched, her mind already calculating the next move, the next point to reinforce or exploit. The directive held true, a deadly gauntlet that the Mossfolk were forced to run into, turning their eager charge into a costly, bloody crawl. After the Mossfolk were dispatched the party proceeded to their true objective—the Scalespeaker’s camp lay ahead.
