19. The Grand Strategist—The Gambit

The report to the Grand Strategist Aerion was swift and to the point. Yelee stood before the illusionary projection of a map, enemy troop movements now overlaid with the disruptive interference left by Drakon Vane's countermeasures. Corvus, Lyra, Alaric, Boris, Maeve and Kael stood behind her, their faces grim, the unsettling encounter still fresh in their minds.

"Interference," Aerion stated, the runes in the irises of his eyes rotating faster than usual. "Powerful. Deliberate. Not a simple obstruction, but a deliberate counter." He tapped the point on the map where Yelee’s unit had been operating. "And the energy signature... matches preliminary reports of a high-value enemy asset operating in the sector. And you claim the asset in question is the infamous defector Drakon Vane?"

Yelee nodded, her voice tight. "Yes, Grand Strategist. It was him. He detected our scrying attempt and pushed back. He's an arcane tactician like myself, an adherent of the Corporeality of Solution stratagem. His energy signature is like a physical force I could never mistake for anything else."

Aerion turned from the map, his sharp eyes fixed on Yelee. "Corporeality of Solution arcane stratagem. A tactician who imposes their will upon the battlefield through direct approach. A head-on confrontation with such a tactician is inefficient. Their strength lies in meeting force with greater force, in overwhelming opposition with sheer, directed presence. Attempting to force our way through his tactical awareness would be costly and likely futile."

He paused, his gaze sweeping over the members of Yelee’s unit. "Your unit's strength lies in subtlety, in perceiving and manipulating the unseen. Vane's strength lies in unmaking the unseen with a brutal manifestation of physicality. A direct contest of wills in the sphere of the arcane would favor him."

Yelee felt a cold knot of agreement in her stomach. She knew Vane well. She had no doubts that his grounded, forceful approach would eventually dismantle her more fluid tactics.

Aerion's expression shifted, a calculating light flaring the runes in his enhanced eyes. "However," he continued, "Vane's strength could become his potential weakness. He is rooted in the physical, in the imposition of his will. He expects direct opposition, a challenge to his presence." He looked back at Yelee. "He detected your probe. He knows you are attempting to gather intelligence. He will anticipate further attempts, likely reinforcing his defenses against direct scrying or summoning."

He walked slowly around the map table, his fingers tracing potential lines of movement, areas of concentration. "We need to know what he is planning. Those troop movements towards the southern pass are significant. But attempting to pierce his awareness again, head-on, is precisely what he expects. He will be ready."

Aerion stopped before Yelee, his gaze intense. "We need a gambit, Tactician. A deception. Something that will mislead Vane, draw his attention, his resources, and his will away from our true objectives. Something that will make him look where we are not, or prepare for a threat that is not coming."

He leaned forward slightly. "If anyone can devise such a gambit, it is you, Tactician Yelee. You seem to have a shared history with Drakon Vane. You have faced him before, you understand the nature of his stratagem. Your tactical mind, honed by Arcadius and tested in the field, is well suited to anticipate his reactions, to weave a deception he will be forced to accept as a threat."

The weight of his words settled upon her. A gambit? Against Drakon Vane? It was a daunting task, one that required not just tactical skill, but a deep, unsettling understanding of her rival's mind. It was a challenge that felt both terrifying and, in a strange way, a validation of her own growth through the grim lessons she had learned. She was not yet ready to command an army, perhaps, or to open Arcadius's grimoire, but she had to engage Vane in the game of tactics sooner or later. She had to be ready to outsmart the force that had always been her worst tactical nightmare.

Yelee met Aerion's gaze, the exhaustion momentarily forgotten, replaced by a cold, focused resolve. "Understood, Grand Strategist," she said, her voice steady. "I will devise a gambit that will mislead even such an undaunting adversary as Drakon Vane."

Aerion gave a curt nod. "The war waits for no one, tactician. The fate of the southern pass depends on the quality of your planning."

Yelee turned to her unit, its the members watching her, awaiting direction. The mission had just escalated dramatically, from simple reconnaissance to a complex game of deception against a formidable, personal foe. The next lesson, it seemed, would be taught in the twists and turns of her own rivalry.
