18. The Tactician—A Shadow From The Past

The mission was underway. Hidden in a concealed reconnaissance tent miles behind enemy lines, the unit was attempting to pierce the veil of enemy movements. Master Corvus held his crystal ball, his intelligent blue eyes distant as he reached out with his divinatory senses. Initiate Lyra sat beside him, clutching her bone dice, her brow furrowed in concentration. Master Alaric prepared a small, intricate summoning circle, while Boris idly conjured ephemeral lights, his restless energy barely contained. Maeve sat cross-legged, her eyes closed, silently chanting, her connection to the stars seeking patterns in the enemy's destiny. Kael, a silent sentinel, melted into the deepest shadows of the tent’s entrance, his presence a cold assurance of security.

Yelee stood behind Corvus, her hand extended toward her floating grimoire, her own senses extended, monitoring the subtle energy flows of their own operation and the surrounding environment.

"I see... movement," Corvus murmured, his voice strained. "Large troop concentrations... shifting towards the southern pass. More than projected."

Lyra gasped softly. "The dice... they speak of impassable obstacles... a basalt wall where there should be none."

Alaric frowned, adjusting a component in his circle. "Attempting a scrying proxy... something is interfering. The connection is unstable."

Suddenly, Corvus cried out, recoiling from the crystal ball as if struck. The image within dissolved into static. Lyra's dice scattered across the floor, clattering ominously. Alaric's summoning circle flared erratically, then went dark. Boris's ephemeral lights vanished. Even Maeve's serene expression tightened with discomfort.

"What happened?" Yelee asked, stepping forward, her senses flaring with alarm. The energy around them felt violated, pushed back by a powerful, hostile force.

Corvus rubbed his temples, his eyes wide. "Interference. Powerful... deliberate. Not just a ward. A presence. Someone saw us looking and pushed away."

"Someone who doesn't want us to pry," Alaric added, his voice grim. "Blocked the summoning, too. Like trying to pull something into a space already occupied by a mountain."

Maeve opened her eyes, their starlight dimmed. "The patterns... they recoiled. A destiny too strong to be manipulated."

Yelee felt it too now, a distinct, powerful energy signature that had slammed into their scrying attempt. It was in part similar to Arcadius's unwavering command. The energy was grounded, forceful, radiating an aura of brutal efficiency and unyielding presence. It felt like a physical manifestation of an arcane tactician's magical power.

And to her surprise, it was painfully familiar. A name, a face she had hoped never to remember, least encounter again on the battlefield, flashed in her mind. An adherent of the Corporeality of Solution Stratagem, a defector arcane tactician who favored direct, overwhelming force, who added their physical might to arcane principles. Her long-standing rival, the one whose methods were her antithesis, yet whose effectiveness was undeniable.

"Drakon Vane," Yelee breathed, the name—a bitter taste in her mouth.

Kael, who had remained silent in the shadows, jumped reflexively assuming a combat stance. His low rasp confirmed her fear. "The Drakon Vane? Here?"

Yelee ignored him, her gaze distant, seeing not the tent’s wall, but the face of her rival Drakon Vane. He was an arcane tactician whose brutal efficiency had always grated against her more fluid, analytical approach. He was everything she wasn't—grounded, physically imposing, adding his raw strength to his arcane exploits. He had always been her worst nightmare on the training field, a force that seemed to bypass her measured maneuvers with sheer, directed power and uncanny intellect.

"He's an arcane tactician," Yelee explained to her unit, her voice tight. "His stratagem is called Corporeality of Solution. His magic manifests in his physical presence adding to the impact of his brutal methods. He doesn't just read the battlefield; he imposes his will upon it. He must be commanding those weird troop movements detected earlier. He must have foiled our probe."

The energy signature pulsed again in her mind, a chilling confirmation of his presence. It was a challenge, a silent acknowledgment that he knew they were here, watching.

Kael looked at her, his wise eyes filled with concern. "Tactician, if Vane is here, the whole campaign has just become significantly more dangerous. The Grand Strategist must know of this."

Yelee nodded, her hand clenching into a fist, dangerous was an understatement. Drakon Vane wasn't just an obstacle; he was a counter-tactician, a rival who understood her methods just as well as she understood his, and whose stratagem was designed to overcome the very kind of subtle, insightful approach her unit represented.

The fog of war hadn't just been pierced; it had stared back, and the face in the shadows belonged to her worst nightmare. The mission had just adopted a personal undertone of a long-standing grudge.
