10. The Advisor—The Scrutiny

The immediate aftermath of the Monarch's arrival was a grim sight of victory that came too late. The enemy was routed, the Scaled Paragon slain, but the cost was etched into the faces of the weary soldiers and the silence that fell over the ground where General Arcadius had fallen. The Monarch, the Kingdom's highest authority, surveyed the scene with a stern, assessing gaze. The news of Arcadius's death reached him quickly, delivered by solemn-faced officers. A shadow crossed the Monarch's face, a brief flicker of grief or perhaps strategic concern, quickly masked by the demands of command.

Yelee, having relinquished her temporary duty to the arriving officers, stood aside, watching the transition. She felt adrift, the intense focus of command replaced by a hollow ache.

Later that evening, in a makeshift tent heavy with the smell of damp canvas and lamp oil, Yelee was summoned. The tent was sparse, dominated by a large map table. Standing beside it was one of the Monarch's closest advisors, a sharp-featured man, Grand Master Seraphin. His robes were dark and plain, his movements sharp and precise. The energy around him, as Yelee perceived it, was cold, analytical, like the edge of a concealed blade. He possessed none of Arcadius's deep, flowing connection to the weave of conflict; his was a calculating, dissecting presence of a seasoned manipulator and mastermind.

"Tactician,…" Seraphin quickly glanced at the memo lying on the table in front of him, his voice cool, devoid of warmth. "Yelee, was it? The reports are conflicting. General Arcadius fell, and yet, the line held. The army did not break. This surprisingly welcome development is attributed, in part, to your actions." His eyes, sharp and grey, fixed on her, dissecting. "Explain."

Yelee felt a prickle of unease, a shadow of the intimidation she'd felt facing Arcadius, but this was different. Arcadius had sought understanding; Seraphin sought validation, or perhaps, contradiction. She stood straighter, meeting his gaze.

"Grand Master," she began, her voice steady despite her weariness. "The General... By slaying the Scaled Paragon he had ensured that the enemy's momentum was broken. His death has left a void, a momentary disarray in our ranks. I assumed command based on my role as an arcane tactician and the immediate necessity. I ordered the formation of a defensive perimeter, rallied the officers, and directed units to reinforce weak points and anticipate enemy counter-attacks. We managed to hold the ground until the Monarch's arrival. The rest has already been reported to you, I presume."

Seraphin tilted his head slightly, a gesture that felt more like a predator assessing prey.

"A junior tactician, assuming command after a General of Arcadius's caliber falls, preventing a rout against superior numbers? It all seems highly improbable. The chaos of such a moment is immense, prompting a flight, rather than a fight for most officers of a comparable level of expertise."

His skepticism was a palpable force, pressing down on her. Yelee felt the grim weight of the past few days—the loss of her comrades, the cold efficiency of the Black Razor unit, the sheer terror of holding a breaking line. She had ended life, ordered death, and walked through the ashes of her own ideals. This interrogation, while intimidating, felt like a lesser trial compared to the suffocating horror of the battlefield.

"The soldiers were disciplined, Grand Master," Yelee stated, keeping her voice level. "General Arcadius's training held. They needed direction, a voice of command which, as the only arcane tactician present, I provided. My knowledge of the positions, the enemy's likely moves based on the energy flows... It allowed me to make rapid decisions. We were outnumbered, but the Scaled Paragon's death had impeded on the enemy's advance."

"Energy flows," Seraphin repeated, a faint, dismissive tone in his voice. "Vague notions for a moment requiring concrete action. Many would claim insight in hindsight—holding that line would have required much more than just senses augmented by magic."

He leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "Oh, and before you expand on your testimony, I have my own witnesses to your claims, tactician Yelee."

Yelee's jaw tightened. Before she could react, the tent flap opened, and three figures, cloaked and silent, entered. Unit Black Razor! Kael, the leader, stood slightly forward, his shadowed face turned towards Seraphin. The energy they exuded was the same—cold, sharp, unsettling.

Seraphin's eyes narrowed further, a flicker of something that might have been caution entering his gaze.

"Unit Black Razor. Your report on the recent engagement. Specifically, your observations regarding the command structure after General Arcadius's fall."

Kael's voice, a low rasp, cut through the tense silence. "There was no one there who wasn't affected by the General’s fall. It was like a chair pulled from under you." He paused, his gaze shifting briefly towards Yelee, though his face remained hidden. "The lass… I mean the Tactician, she stepped in. Her voice filled the void, she issued clear, concise orders, used the terrain, anticipated enemy shifts. Kept the line from collapsing when it should have broken, if you ask me."

Another figure, the smaller, quicker one, added, "Didn't hesitate. Knew what needed doing. Kept us from getting flanked."

The third figure simply nodded, a silent, chilling confirmation.

Seraphin was silent for a long moment, his sharp eyes flicking between Yelee and the shadowy figures. The testimony was unexpected, coming from a unit whose reports were usually minimal and focused solely on mission parameters. Their energy, while dark, was undeniably truthful. They had no reason to lie for Yelee.

Finally, Seraphin leaned back, the intensity in his gaze lessening, replaced by a grudging acceptance.

"Very well," he said, his voice still cool, but the edge of dismissal gone. "Your testimony is noted. You are dismissed." He looked at Yelee. "Tactician Yelee. Your report is corroborated. You may go."

Yelee felt a wave of exhaustion. She had endured the Grand Master's scrutiny, his skepticism of her magic and his doubt in her combat expertise. The grim reality of her choices had, ironically, saved her from being dismissed as incompetent. She had survived the battlefield, and now, the interrogation. The lessons, it seemed, kept coming, each one colder and harder than the last. She had managed the flow of conflict, ordered life and death, and it in turn strengthened her to stand unbroken even before the Monarch's chilling advisor Grand Master Seraphin himself.
