Chapter 28
As I brushed my hair, I realized that Adrian was watching me in the mirror, like a creep.
âWhatâs up?â I asked, turning around as he smiled.
âAre you ready, yet? Weâre taking my car?â He asked and I rolled my eyes but nodded, tossing my hair into a ponytail. I galloped down the stairs with my purse slung over my shoulder.
I pulled my hood over my head as I locked the door of my house. The rain was loud and hitting the stairs like bullets. I quickly raced down the stairs, meeting Adrian at his car were he was standing outside of the passengerâs door. He opened the door and allowed me to enter the warmth of the car.
âNo offense, but isnât it a parents job to go grocery shopping?â Adrian asked me as he buckled his seatbelt and shook his head, very dog like. I snorted.
âIsnât it a parentâs job to be a parent?â I asked and he smiled at me. âTheyâre on another business trip.â
âIs your Aunt coming back?â He asked me and I nodded.
âYeah, not for another week or so.â I replied, shrugging my shoulders as I shed the jacket while he turned up the heat of the car. The November air was colder than it usually was.
âHow long are your parents going to be gone?â He inquired, pulling out of his driveway and starting on the way to the supermarket.
âThey said two weeks but two weeks always turns into four and four turns into six and so on.â I replied, glancing at him for a moment.
âDo you have some sort of list for us to go by?â He asked me and I shook my head, shrugging slightly as I thought.
âI get what Jessie, Aunt Cherry and I like,â I informed him and he nodded. âI have a few rules.â
âUgh, whatâs with everyone and their rules against me? Can I not have fun?â He whined and I smiled.
âThereâs a difference between having fun and almost getting arrested.â I retorted and he rolled his eyes and shook his head.
âFun is fun.â He joked and I rolled my eyes.

When we entered the large storeâs parking lot, I realized that it was a Wal-Mart in a different town. We had two Wal-Marts in my hometown; why didnât we just go to the one we didnât wreck?
Adrian seemed to catch on to my thoughts because he started whistling. I turned to look at him with my arms crossed.
âWhy are we here?â I questioned him with my eyebrows raised. He smiled innocently before pointing to my stomach.
âFio needs to eat. Food in store. We go to store. We buy food.â He explained as if I was stupid. I punched his shoulder.
âIâm not an idiot. Why didnât we go to the other Wal-Mart?â I snapped, glaring at him.
âBecause I wanted to spend more time with you?â He offered and I glared at him.
âThatâs not going to work. No funny business, Easton.â I snapped, getting out of the car.
âNo promises, Harper.â He retorted. I threw a glare over my shoulder in his direction.
âWhy must you mock me?â I replied, staring at the soaked cement. I looked up to see Adrian moonwalking and I raised an eyebrow.
âYou jealous?â He slid around me in circle and I extended my leg to try and trip him but he jumped him and then landed, continuing his moonwalk. I glared at him.
âCan you not?â I asked as we approached the large entrance.
âDance with me.â He stated, holding out his hand. I stared at him like he was a nutcase, which he was.
âWhatâs your pro-.â I started to ask but I couldnât because he already snatched my hand and began tangoing around. I was stepping on his feet because I didnât know what to do.
âJeez, youâre a terrible dancer.â He muttered when he stopped tangoing and just started twirling me. I was getting dizzy.
âThanks, such an ego inflator you are. Besides, I wasnât prepared.â I muttered and he smirked.
âOkay, then get ready,â He warned me as he came to a halt. We waited a few seconds before we started dancing again. âAnd youâre still a terrible dancer.â I glared at him.
âIâm a better dancer than you are!â I lied. I knew I was a terrible dancer. I always had been.
âPlease.â He snorted. I glared at him.
âYou must mean âplease, youâre so right and such a better dancer than I am.â Because I am such a better dancer than you are.â I snapped and he laughed.
Whatever he was going to say was cut off by the sound of thunder clapping. I jumped before running into the store, Adrian hot on my heels.
âLetâs get a carriage.â I quickly stated in hopes of dismissing our previous conversation.
Adrian grabbed a carriage and smiled down at it creepily. I just watched as he leaned on the carriage with the same creepy smile on his face. I pushed him off of the carriage while grabbing it. âI think I should wheel this baby around.â
âThatâs not fair,â Adrian whined. I furrowed my eyebrows at him. âI had football practice for two hours and you wonât let me lean on the carriage!â
âGuess what?â I replied, smiling. He smiled hopefully.
âWhat?â He asked, extending his hands for the carriage while I gripped it tighter and got in a position to run. I really hope the store was empty.
âItâs not my problem!â I shouted over my shoulder as I darted through the main aisle. I came upon the chip aisle. I grabbed Doritos, Cheetos, Lays, Sour Cream and Onion, and Tostitos. I grabbed some dip, too.
âOh, Fio!â Adrian called, sounding very close. I quickly wheeled out of the chip isle. The next isle was frozen foods. I chose a few frozen meals. I grabbed a few packs of frozen broccoli and corn. I even grabbed some frozen fruit packs before Adrian decided to call out to me again.
I quickly wheeled into the next isle, not bothering to look at the overhead sign. Adrian quickly ran into the aisle after me. I realized what this aisle is. The Feminine Aisle. I started stuttered to try and make an excuse.
âI-I, uh, I didnât mean to come into this aisle! I was just running away from you! I swear! I donât even need this stuff!â I finally managed to say and Adrian approached me, looking at the part of the aisle that I was standing in front of. Just my luck. I was standing in front of heavy flow maxi pads.
âThatâs⦠pleasant to know.â He replied, turning to look at me. Iâm sure that my face looked like a fire hydrant.
âI swear! Itâs not what it looks like! I donât even need this stuff! Especially pads!â I cried out, using the overused line honestly. He bit his lip to stop laughing. I realized my mistake.
âWell, the super tampons are over there.â He told me, still biting his lip. I glared at him.
âI was running away from you. They placed this aisle conveniently next to the frozen food section!â I snapped and he rolled his eyes. I darted out of that aisle without a word being said.
I heard him following me. I looked intently at the aisles I was going into this time. After a while, Adrian and I met up again and my carriage was halfway filled. I already got canned vegetables, chips, and frozen foods.
âWhere to next?â Adrian asked, eyeing the cart. Our previous situation seemed lost in his mind.
âFruits.â I replied, wheeling the carriage towards the fruit section. One of the main things I liked about Wal-Mart was that they almost always had every fruit no matter what season it was.
âYou take the carriage.â I stated whilst staring at the produce in front of me. I grabbed a bag of apples and chucked them into the carriage.
I grabbed a bunch of bananas and Adrian laughed when I dropped them into the carriage.
âWhat?â I furrowed my eyebrows. A smirk slowly spread across his face.
âYou like bananas.â He replied. Heâs such a pervert. I let out a quiet laugh before turning back to my shopping.
I walked over to the peaches and grabbed a bag, placing a good amount inside of the plastic sack. I did the same with plums. I heard the cart slowly driving behind me. I turned around to see Adrian driving the cart away from me. âAdrian!â I shouted and he looked behind him before he started driving away.
âWhere are you going?â I asked him as I jogged after him. He was much faster than I was. Obviously, heâs a football and a baseball player, genius.
âPayback!â This was all Adrian said before he disappeared in another aisle. I groaned before grabbing a small carrier and putting the rest of the fruits into it. What? I should at least finish shopping before I find him.
__
After an hour of searching, I finally found him. He was in the videogame aisle, looking at the games in awe.
âAdrian!â I shouted when I approached him. He turned quickly before turning back to the carriage.
âAbort mission!â He yelled, wheeling the carriage towards the toy aisle. I groaned, placing my hands on my face. I followed him.
âAidey!â I shouted, walking into an aisle with toy wrestlers and superhero action figures. It also had nerf guns. I continued walking before I felt something thud into my back. I turned to see Adrian holding a âsampleâ nerf gun. âWhat are you doing?â
âDefending whatâs rightfully mine!â He shouted, blocking the carriage. I glared at him before grabbed the other sample nerf gun and loading the foam bullets into it.
âGive me the carriage and I wonât shoot.â I warned and he laughed mockingly before replying.
âOver my dead body.â I aimed the gun at his head.
âThat can be arranged.â I replied, shooting the gun. It hit him in the chest and he over exaggeratingly fell to the floor, clinging to his chest dramatically.
âYou shot me.â He whispered as I walked over to him.
âI did.â I nodded. He shot me a glare before continuing.
âI have one thing to tell you, Fio.â He said, his voice raspy.
âWhat?â I asked, placing a hand on my hip.
âI left the million dollars in theâ¦â He started, lowering his head and pretending to die. I kicked his side lightly.
âHe dead yet?â I asked, kneeling down to check his pockets. When I reached towards his pocket, he grabbed my hand. Expecting his eyes to be open, I looked at his face and his eyes were still closed.
âSuch a terrible actor.â I muttered under my breath, trying to take my hand out of his grip but he grabbed my hand with both of his.
âHelp! Theyâre watching us!â He hissed, sitting up abruptly. I jumped slightly. He laughed loudly. I ripped my hand out of his grip and walked over to the carriage, muttering angrily. He scared the crap out of me.
âYouâre stupid!â I hissed when Adrian finally stopped laughing. I wheeled us towards the drinks.
âLighten up.â Adrian smirked, walking beside me. I grabbed two gallons of milk, a gallon of juice, and a bottle of soda. I also grabbed milk and cookie dough.
âI hope youâre carrying all of this.â Adrian muttered when he helped me heave the gallons into the carriage. I glared at him.
âSorry, my heart just leaped out of my chest a few seconds ago because some idiot scared me.â I snapped and he rolled his eyes.
__
âYour total is $186.00.â I tossed Adrian two hundred dollar bills.
âPay for this and meet me at the car!â I told him, running back towards the aisles. He gave me a confused look but nodded anyway.
I ran towards the toy aisle, where Adrian and I were before and looked through the nerf guns. I was buying one, so what?
I grabbed one that was $37.50 and ran towards a different checkout. I paid the money and watched as Adrian walked towards the car. I was following about 30 feet behind him.
He was swaying his hips rather girlishly and when he dropped his lip balm, he bent over and shook his butt. A crash of thunder scared me and I let out a girlish scream. He quickly stood up, hitting his head on the handle of the carriage. I laughed and it turned into me choking.
âYouâre so stupid!â I laughed, wiping my eyes from the rain. He glared at me, holding his head. We packed the trunk with the food before getting into the car.
âYouâre the one stalking people.â He retorted with a small smile on his face. Did that hit cause him to go crazy? âWhatâs that?â Adrian asked, looking at the bag on my lap. I looked down at the bag and then back up at Adrian.
âOh, itâs nothing.â I shrugged and Adrian smirked.
âSuper tampons and maxi pads.â He muttered and I glared at him.
âNo, itâs not.â I snapped and he raised an eyebrow. âDonât you think they wouldâve given me a smaller bag?â
This shut Adrian up and he decided to just keep driving. I smirked out the window, watching as the rain continued to pour.
âI have a game on Friday, yâknow.â Adrian announced, breaking the silence. I turned to look at him.
âWhich sport?â I asked, raising an eyebrow.
âFootball. Itâs on Friday.â He told me. I nodded.
âI didnât hear you the first or second time. What day is it on?â I snorted and he glared at me.
âIâm trying to ask you to go.â He snapped and I raised an eyebrow.
âAs much as Iâd love to see you run around in tights, I have detention.â I sighed, leaning back in the seat.
âOkay.â He spoke and I looked at him, slightly confused. I turned back in my seat, looking out the window.
âOkay.â I replied awkwardly.
__
âHelp me carry these inside?â I asked Adrian and he nodded, rolling his eyes.
âYou expect me to just walk inside my house and laugh while you struggle to carry them inside?â He asked and I looked down at my feet sheepishly.
âI did.â I replied, watching as he opened the trunk and took about five bags in each hand.
I watched, slightly impressed but mostly annoyed, as he walked to my porch while I grabbed the bag that was on my lap and the two bags that he left for me, the bread and some frozen peas, and slammed the trunk.
I swear I heard him whimper when I slammed the trunk. I smiled at him as he looked from me to his car. I unlocked the door and brought my bags inside. Surprisingly, Adrian followed me inside with his bags.
âYou expected me to just leave you with them there, didnât you?â He asked when I turned on the living room light. I heard him kick the front door closed.
âYeah.â I admitted, entering the kitchen and turning on the light.
âYou can put them there.â I told him while I pointed to the entryway of the kitchen. That would be a safety hazard. Instead, he placed them on the kitchen counter.
He began unpacking the bag while I raised an eyebrow. âYou expected me to just leave without helping you put the groceries away?â He asked and I rolled my eyes but started unpacking the bags.
__
âWhere does this go?â Adrian asked, holding up the bread. I pointed to the breadbox and he nodded.
That was probably the third time in the last 10 minutes that heâd asked me where something went. He unpacked the frozen foods and fruits and put them where they would normally go. âI thought my mom was the only one who still uses a breadbox.â
âNope, I bought that baby,â I replied, tossing the plastic bags into the trash can. The only thing left was my nerf gun. I grabbed that bag and smiled. âThanks.â I thanked Adrian and he waved his hand.
âIt was no problem.â He excused.
âHowâs your head?â I asked him and he rolled his eyes.
âI didnât hit my head that hard. I just bumped my hair.â He replied, rubbing his head and wincing. I rolled my eyes.
âYou should ice it.â I told him, taking out the frozen peas and plopping them onto his head.
âThanks.â He grumbled, wincing as the cold bag hit his head.
âItâs no problem.â I admitted, smirking at my causing of his pain. âWeâre breaking my motherâs rules.â I absentmindedly said. He furrowed his eyebrows.
âWhat?â He asked and I shook my head. âNo, you canât do that. Now I want to know.â He frowned.
âMy mother said that we canât be alone unsupervised.â I shrugged and he smirked.
âShe thinks that weâre dating?â He asked. I felt my face warm up. Iâd like that. I shook my head.
âEver since I dyed my hair, she thinks Iâm out to rebel.â I shrugged and he smiled.
âYou are rebelling.â He told me. I sat on the counter and raised my hand.
âEnlighten me.â I watched as he sat across from me on the island. If I extended my foot out an inch or two, itâd hit his.
âYou snuck out of the house. You lied to your parents. You dyed your hair. You lied to your Aunt.â He replied.
âWay to make me feel innocent and sweet.â I muttered. He just rolled his eyes.
âNow I have to go, I canât bear the guilt of breaking your motherâs rules any longer.â Adrian dramatically said, handing me back my peas. I rolled my eyes, following him to the door.
I locked the door behind him, letting out a sigh. I walked upstairs with my nerf gun and took out my bucket list. I was surprisingly going through this list rather quickly.
