"When a body moves, it's the most revealing thing. Dance for me a minute, and I'll tell you who you are." - Mikhail Baryshnikov
The hotel we were staying were hosting a dinner and dance which Dylan insisted we go to. Of course I protested, I was not a big fan of dance, but Dylan being the stubborn man that he was couldn't take no for an answer.
I'm not a dancer.
"Well neither am I, but I'd like to dance. With you." His eyes pleading with mine my resolve already broken.
I washed my hair, letting it dry in its natural waves before slipping on a white dress. The light fabric felt nice on my skin in the hot, humid weather. The simple blue gemstone hung from my neck while my feet were covered by delicate heeled sandals. Dylan was sitting on the bed, wearing a loose linen white shirt and blue shorts, his focus directed at his phone. When I walked out his eyes snapped to mine, an easy smile sliding onto his face. Standing up he grabbed something off the bed and sauntered over to me. He placed a rustic flower crown on my head, brushing a few tendrils from my face. "Perfect." He whispered.
I slipped my hand in his and we made our way to restaurant, my heels knocking against the bamboo walkway. The rest of the guests were also filtering in from their rooms, taking their seats at the tables. Almost immediately chilled champagne was poured into our glasses and Dylan's eyes glinted with mischief as a smirk graced his face. Clinking our glasses together we settled into the atmosphere. Unlike the night before the setting wasn't oozing with romance since there were kids running between the tables, their laughs drowning out the background music.
Our first course was a simple clear soup of sorts followed by the main dish of seafood linguine for me and a steak for Dylan. Dessert was a decadent chocolate cake which I washed down with some white wine. Dylan spent the time talking about the cafe. His animated face showed his emotions all too clearly as he spoke of his kindest customers, and those he didn't particularly like. He spoke fondly of his co workers and of Alan, the man in charge when Dylan was deployed. Being in that cafe brought him so much joy I hadn't seen beyond the tedious nature of working as a barista. There was more to being a man who served coffee, and at that moment I didn't have more respect for him as I did then.
The plates were being cleared up when the music became louder. The DJ was playing very upbeat tunes, promoting some guests to the makeshift dance floor in the middle of the area. I just awkwardly stood there, while Dylan had his arms outstretched and was shaking body to the beat. "Come on Elise, it's fun. Trust me." He grinned, taking my hands and waving them around.
It took a few songs, but eventually I found myself loosening up and moving to the music. Dylan took my hand and twirled me out till his arm was outstretched before pulling me back in. Breathless I crashed against his chest. My eyes locked to his as I moved out, shaking my body and swayed my hips. He let go of my hand and I raised my arms above my head, closing my eyes. I felt the rhythm and swayed my hips, just listening to the music surrounding me. Dylan's arms came around my waist from behind and we moved together, my hand interlocked behind his neck. Leaning back into his shoulder I allowed him to guide me through the notes. My hands covered his as he rested one on my stomach and the other on my shoulder, crossing my chest. My head rested on his shoulder, his lips touching the exposed skin where my neck and shoulder joined. Suddenly he twisted me around in his arms so I faced him, his eyes bearing into mine.
"You dance with all your emotions on display. Your face doesn't hide a thing." He whispered. I felt the music around us slow down and the dance floor emptying. Dylan rested his hand on my lower back, pushing me closer to him while his other grasped mine. We swayed slowly to the tunes our eyes fixated on each others.
"You let yourself free and that is a beautiful thing to see Elise. Your body is incredible, the way it sensed the music. You expressed yourself in a way your words in that notebook could never express. You're finding yourself through the music and that was amazing to watch. Don't ever stop growing." He smiled.
I frowned as my feet started to hurt, especially since I was wearing heels so I broke away from Dylan and walked over to our table, sliding out of the shoes to massage my feet. "You don't have to wear them." He told me just as I was about to put them back on. Sighing I placed them by the chair and took his outstretched hand as he led me back on to the dance floor. Together we moved across the dance floor, Dylan's proficiency in the Waltz helped guide me with him. Dancing in such a informal atmosphere meant that our form was more rough and relaxed as we moved close to each other. He twirled me around with a huge smile on his face.
The whole time we danced, our eyes never left each others as we opened ourselves for everyone to see. Again he twirled me, this time more than once. I turned into his body, my hands slamming into his chest and breathing heavily. His eyes held an emotion I couldn't figure out when he stared into my eyes.
"I think I'm falling for you Elise." He whispered, almost looking pained as he uttered the words.
"I think I'm falling for you too." My thoughts screamed, only falling on deaf ears because those words never left my lips.
