Jack, Vivi, and Ebele were having a picnic on a lush hill. This wasnât Jack main body, of course, but they shared a soul. He knew that the main body had just reentered the universe.
âHowâs school going, Ebele?â he asked.
âItâs perfect!â she replied, stuffing herself with brioche bread. Crumbs rained on the blanket below. âMy friends are all doing as great as I am, so we can be in the same classes. Norton got into coredust, howeverâI can see how it gives him energy, but relying on that it feels wrong.â
Jack chuckled. âBack in my day, we used coffee,â he said.
âNot everyone has the expensive coffee you use, dad. The regular kind just doesnât affect cultivators.â
âIt does if you drink enough.â
âDonât encourage bad behaviors in your daughter!â Vivi said, her mood vibrant. âFocus on your studies, Ebele, but donât forget to have fun. Itâs equally important.â
âIf not more,â Jack said.
âIf not more,â Vivi agreed. âForging a great self is better than excelling in your studies. Itâs the foundation of everything.â
âI know. Youâve only told me, like, a thousand times,â Ebele complained.
Jack smiled. Since he shared memories with his main body, he could easily feel the difference between a warmongering, power-thirsting life and this simpler one. Both filled him equally. Of course, having memories and living them out wasnât exactly the same, but he was so glad heâd made this clone.
Being with his wife and daughter every dayâor whenever she took a break from the Academyâwas a blessing in and of itself.
I just hope, he thought, looking at the blue sky, the dream doesnât shatter tomorrowâ¦
âHey, Vivi, Ebele,â he said. Both women turned to look at him. âI love you.â
They blinked in surprise, then smiled sweetly. âI love you too, Jack,â Vivi said. âBoth of you.â
âMe too,â Ebele said. Thankfully, she was past being a teenager, so associating with her parents came easy. Jack smiled at their affirmations. He opened his arms wide, embracing them both.
âDid something happen?â Ebele asked as she hugged him back.
âNothing happened and nothing will,â he replied. âWhile Iâm here, youâll always be safe.â
âUmâ¦â Ebele said. âThanks?â
âYouâre welcome.â He smiled. They didnât know about the final battle happening tomorrow. They didnât need to. He would protect them⦠No matter what.

The night was breezy. Stars shone over the New Cathedral, shedding their light onto the top of the main temple, which the Arch Priestess had graciously offered to Jack and his friends. They could have drunk their wine between the clouds or in orbit, but there was a different joy to occupying the top of a tall building.
âTo friendship,â Jack said, raising his cup. âThe only constant of the cultivation world.â
âI thought the only constant was benefits,â Min Ling said.
âOnly if you suck.â
Everyone laughed, cheering and then downing their cups.
âI like your universe,â Strawpin said, looking up at the stars. âOur sky is just gray and red. Notâ¦this.â
Starhair wrapped his arm under her, Strawpin leaning in. âEvery world is beautiful,â he said. âFor example, your world had you. All the stars in the sky couldnât compete with that.â ɽ
She giggled, while Fiend Prince snorted in laughter. âCan you believe this guy?â he said. âHe was just a nobody before, and the moment he found a girl, bam! Prince Charming.â
âAt least Iâm trying. You were an average dude, then you didnât find a girl, and bam! Still an average dude.â
âHey! Iâm a genius, you know! The first disciple of Jack Rust!â Everyone laughed over his words. âWhy are you laughing? Ohhh, is it sparring time yet?â
âNo sparring this time,â Jack said with a smile. âWeâll have plenty of fighting tomorrow. Tonight is for relaxing and enjoying life.â
âThatâs true,â Brock said. âLet me change the subject, bros. Howâs everyone feeling?â
They looked at each other. âRight now?â Min Ling asked.
âNow and always.â
âIâm apprehensive,â Starhair said, his arm going slack around Strawpinâs shoulders. âI feel weâre on the cusp of a massive breakthrough. If we can just survive this war, everything will be greatâ¦but can we? A single battle will judge the universeâs doom or endless prosperity. I know I wonât play much of a part, but after spending time with all of you, I canât help feeling involvedâ¦and it scares me.â
Jack gazed softly over his cup. âYouâve changed a lot,â he said.
âI had to. Canât keep pissing myself every time an Overlord looks at me the wrong way.â
They laughed again.
âItâs not a single deciding battle,â Heavenly Spoon said. He had broken the back of his chair and reattached it in a laid-back position, letting him lounge. A small silver spoon stuck out of his cup. âItâs the accumulation of all our efforts over the years. Every choice weâve made, every danger weâve overcome, and every opportunity weâve grasped with our two hands. We didnât know at the time, but everything led to this deciding moment. Itâs a relief, in a way. Compared to everything weâve already done, our performance in tomorrowâs battle matters little. The result is almost predetermined. We just have to play it out.â
âI donât see it that way,â Fiend Prince said. âI understand youâre trying to compose yourself, but that is not the way of my Dao. Everything in the past only prepared me for this moment. I was sharpening my claws, and now is the time to use them. My performance matters.â
âI side with Fiend Prince,â Min Ling said.
âAnd I with Spoon,â Starhair said. âWhat about you, Jack and Brock? Youâre the most accomplished individuals here. What do you think?â
Brock raised his cup and took a big sip. âI disagree with all of you,â he said. âThe performance of any individual is unimportant. It is our cumulative bro experience that matters.â

Everyone gawked for a moment, then laughed. âThatâs so Brock,â Min Ling said. As if drawn by an invisible power, all eyes slowly turned to Jack.
Heâd been content to sit in his corner and listen to his friends speak. Sensing the attention on him, however, he smiled. âIâm just happy to be here,â he said. âSure, I relish the opportunity to fight at the highest level. Iâll try my hardest and break myself to protect the world and my daughter. However⦠I canât help becoming emotional. Less than thirty years ago, Iâd never even heard of the Dao, and I spent my days studying biology and teaching undergraduates in a lab.â
âWhatâs undergraduates?â Min Ling asked.
âWhatâs a lab?â said Fiend Prince.
Jack laughed. âThe point is,â he said, âback then, my world was so deceptively small. I could only see the tiniest corner of the tiniest corner of the universe. Even after the Integration, I remained a frog in a well for a long time. D-Grades were gods to me. Iâd sworn enmity against C-Grades, whom I couldnât even fathom defeating at the time. But I kept adventuring, and my power kept rising, and eventually I stand here, at the top of the world, drinking wine with people who could have made all my past problems disappear with the wave of a hand. I stand side by side with Archons, and tomorrow Iâll fight a war that the Animal Kingdom, my former nemesis, didnât even qualify to participate in.â
He shook his head, wetting his lips with wine before he spoke again. Everyone waited.
âIt feels surreal,â he finally said. âLike itâs all a dream. Me, just taking a stroll through the different power levels, living one fantastical adventure after another. I get emotional every time I think about how far Iâve come. I feel like itâs taken such a long time, but itâs only been, what⦠Thirty years?â He thought about it. âOkay, nevermind. That is a long time.â
âOnly to you,â Starhair said, winking at Jack.
âHow do you convince yourself itâs real?â Spoon asked. âIf everything feels like a dream, how do you know itâs not?â
âBecause of the pain. Pain and loss. They make it real.â
âWelp, that took a dark turn,â Strawpin said. Next to her, Starhair shrugged.
âI liked it. Jack for Arch Priest.â
They laughed again. So did Jack, the weight over his shoulders slowly dissolving.
âSo, tell us about that,â Min Ling said, leaning forward and wagging a finger between Starhair and Strawpin. Her eyes held a tipsy light. âHow did that happen?â
Starhair began. âWell, you know how bees fly from flower to flower? Sometimes, theyââ
Strawpin slapped his shoulder. âWe stayed in the Dark Canal for fifteen years,â she said. âOne day, I asked Dave hereââ
âYour real name is Dave!?â Jack interrupted.
âWhat about it?â Starhair asked back.
âI expected something better. Destructus or Gorgon or something. Dave the Long Hair Archon sounds silly.â
âEveryone has a normal name beneath their titles,â Spoon said, laughing. âMine is JonasâI think Iâve told you before. Itâs not like we know weâll become great when weâre born, and we canât have everyone going around with epic-sounding names. You donât want your coffee served by Ostenslor, the Destroyer of Worlds. Better Jeff, or Tiffany, or Sop. Part of the reason why we all use titles is that Sovereign Jonas does sound silly.â
â...Why am I still Jack?â Jack asked.
âDonât worry bro. I also use my real name,â Brock said.
âYou can make your own titles whenever you want,â Starhair said. âOf course, theyâre usually created for you by everyone else, but I guess you havenât lived long enough. Archon Fist sounds great.â
âToo similar to Archon One Fist.â
âThen Archon Punch. Or force him to change titlesâyouâre better.â
âCan I be Elder Big Bro?â Brock asked.
âSure. Who I am, the title police?â
âI also use my real name,â Min Ling said. âAnd I still want to hear the story of Starhair and Strawpin, by the way.â
âOh yeah,â Strawpin said. âWell, as we were just sitting there for fifteen years, I asked Starhair if he wanted to be my sex partner.â
âSo romantic,â Spoon said with a laugh.
âItâs not over!â she complained. âHe said no at first because, in his opinion, being straightforward was âweirdâ and âcreepy.â So then we had a silly courting dance where we went on dates and stuff. He kissed me behind the Hall of Trialâs silver stele. Thatâs also where weââ
Starhair coughed, growing slightly redder in the face.
Strawpin continued. âAnyway, thatâs how it went. Everyone else really looked forward to us becoming a thing, for some reason, but I think itâs just because our names start with the same letter.â
âThatâs not the reason!â Fiend Prince said. âWe wanted you to become a thing because youâre the hair duo.â
âI have nothing to do with hair,â she complained.
âYour straw looks like hair.â
âI like your hair,â Starhair said.
âAnd I like yours, sweety.â
Brock tilted his head. âWeird mating rituals,â he said.
âWhat can you do? Cultivators are weird like that,â Strawpin said.
âItâs a shame the Arch Priestess couldnât join us,â Jack said with a sigh. âToo busy.â
âWhere did that come from?â Spoon asked. âYou fancy her?â
Jack realized nobody knew about Brock and the Arch Priestess. âSheâs just young, like us,â he lied. âShe would have fit in.â
âShe and I do the sex sometimes,â Brock said, oblivious to everyoneâs shocked glances. He looked around. âWhat?â
âYou and the Arch Priestess!?â everyone said at roughly the same time.
âYes. Why? Am I too handsome?â
âThatâs not the point!!â
âShould you just be saying that?â Jack asked.
Brock shrugged. âItâs not a secret. Besides, these are our bros.â
âOh. Okay.â
Everyone still reeled from the revelation. Jack started pouring more wine into their cups.
âWe should take care not to get too drunk,â Spoon cautioned. âItâs a big day tomorrow, remember? Jack has to beat up the rival genius, and then we go to war. I wonder if Heroâs having wine with his friends right now.â
âI donât think he has any,â Jack said, still refilling the cups. âDidnât strike me as the type.â
âHmm. But every hero has a sidekick, right?â
âNot if you canât stomach sharing the spotlight sometimes.â
âJackâs right,â Min Ling said. âI was talking with some of our subterfuge experts the other day. They regularly tap into the Immortal armyâs off-the-records communications. Apparently, Elder Hero is a mega dick.â
âHow so?â
âSome guy from the other side put it nicely. He said, and I quote, âHard to live with a hero-complex princess.ââ
âWhat does that mean? Iâm a princess,â Strawpin said.
âYou are?â
âYeah. My father runs a small kingdom in the Outer Provinces of our world.â
âOh. Then excuse my indiscretion, Your Highness.â
âNow whatâs that supposed to mean!? Iâm as monster as the rest of you!â
Everyone laughed again.
The wine cups emptied, then were refilled. The pitcher kept going down. This was the highest grade of liquor, with such potency that one drop could intoxicate all fish in a lake. Even these high-level cultivators were affected, their conversation bouncing around all kinds of topics, ranging from funny, to ridiculous, to inappropriate. Brock regaled them with details on how he and the Arch Priestess courted each other. In return, Strawpin was all too eager to discuss her and Starhairâs love life, which made the man go beet-red.
âSome things never change,â Jack said with a chuckle.
Only now did he realize how desperately heâd needed this. Even the most dedicated cultivator remained a person. Without unwinding, heâd eventually break like a string left taut for too long. This simple break, a night chatting and drinking with friends, completely unknotted and upgraded his psyche. He was ready to face the world tomorrowâquite literally.
They still had a battle to prepare for, however. A few hours later, after everyone had relaxed and enjoyed themselves, Brock was the first to stand. âWe should go,â he said. âGoing into battle unprepared would be a shame.â
âYouâre usually the one who starts the drinking,â Jack said.
âYes, but Iâm responsible.â
Jack laughed, then stood as well. âBrockâs right,â he said. âThis was fun. Letâs do it again tomorrow night?â
Everyone smiled as they followed. âYou got a deal,â Min Ling said, swiping the table, chairs, wine, and cups into her space ring. Everyone bade goodbye with smiles and promised to repeat this outing tomorrow. No one mentioned the alternative.
That night, for the first time in untold years, Jack slept. Heâd never woken up more refreshed.
âAre you ready, bro?â Brock asked as they finished breakfast. The armies were assembling outside. The air smelled of war.
âI am,â Jack said, walking out the door. âItâs time to finish this.â
