"What?" I gasp. "Please tell me you're joking."
Stiles give me a look as if saying, 'does it look like I'm joking?"
I pull out my phone fumbling with it as I try to type in the password with my hands shaking. I click on his phone number and slowly hold it up to my ear as it rings.
I then hear his voice. "Hey-"
I interrupt him. "Liam! Oh my-"
"This is Liam. I can't get to the phone right now, but if you leave a message and I actually want to talk to you I'll call you back. Thanks. Bye!"
The color drains from my face as I think of all the bad things that could be happening to him. I know you're probably thinking, 'don't worry. He's fine. He probably just isn't paying attention to his phone right now.'
I usually would think that too. When he gets angry, he usually runs off and goes radio silent for a few hours, but this is different.
He's a werewolf who who has a pretty large price on his head. People want him dead, and so all I can think of now is him dead in a ditch with Garrett standing over him.
"H-hey, Liam," I say when the phone beeped. "It's me. I was just wondering where you are cause Scott says you're not at school. Please call me back when you hear this. I just want to know that you're okay. Okay? Bye."
I hang up swallowing a lump in my throat. My stomach feels like it's tied in knots. I can feel the blood pounding in my ears. I don't know if I'm imagining it but I feel cold as if someone just ran and ice cube down my spine. A feeling of dread fills me as I can't help imagining the worst.
"We have to find him," I whisper looking over at Stiles.
"We will," he assures me. "Scott wants me to get you home so you can get cleaned up. He'll figure something out. He's been talking with Mason about it."
"No, I can't waste time," I tell him. "I need to find my brother."
"Scott's got it under control, okay?" Stiles tells me. "Also, for all we know Liam is fine and is probably wandering around Beacon Hills being the angsty kid that he is."
"Something's wrong," I tell him. "I know Liam's not alright."
"Oh great, here comes the twin telepathy schtick," Stiles mutters, looking up to the sky. "Look Scott wants you at home to look out if Liam shows up or is already there. So we are dropping you at your house then I'm dropping Brett off to Satomi since he's still weak from the wolfsbane."
"Who's Satomi?" I question.
"My alpha," Brett speaks up. I glance over to him to see him leaning against the jeep. The shirt he's wearing is tight on him and amplifies his broad shoulders and lean, muscular body.
"Yes, now can we all please get in?" Stiles demands. Then mutters under his breath. "Underclassmen these days."
"Fine," I mutter. I give up and climb in the backseat, too distracted to fight with Brett.
The drive to my house is silent. We pull in the driveway and Stiles gets out to let me out.
"I'm not going in," I tell him. "I need to find Liam.
"Well you won't be much help when you're half dead on your feet," he replies.
"Well my other half might already actually be dead," I shoot at him. "I need to help find him. I can't just sit around the house."
"Look, I don't have time to play this game with you, Lily," he complains. "I need to go talk to my dad and Parrish at the station about the new third of the dead pool."
"Why Parrish?" I ask.
"He's on the dead pool too," he says impatiently. "Look just get out of the car. I need to go."
I hear Brett sigh. "You know what? Stiles you can go. I'll handle Lily," he says. "I'll make sure she doesn't run off into the woods by herself."
No. Absolutely not. I am not letting him babysit me in my own house.
"But you're hurt," Stiles objects.
"I'm fine," he assures
"I don't need a babysitter," I retort.
"I am not babysitting you," he dead pans. He gets out and pulls his seat forward so he can lean into the backseat. "I said I'm not letting you out alone. I'll help you find him." He tells me in a hushed voice so Stiles can't hear it.
I look at him, perplexed at what he just said.
Brett wants to help me find Liam? Why would he want to do that? He hates Liam.
I bite my lip while having an internal debate in my head over whether I should go along with Brett.
I hate Brett. He's narcissistic and rude and overall undelightful to be around.
But he said he'd help me find Liam and I need to find him. Plus he's a werewolf so I would be protected.
But what if he says or does something creepy when we are alone?
He won't do that. He knows I'm seriously worried. He's not that much of a dick... I hope.
He's been making some weird advances on you lately, and he's been making you have weird feelings about him.
Then keep your feelings in check, this is about Liam.
Fine.
I give a small nod to Brett and see him qwerk a smile. He helps me out of the jeep and I look back at Stiles.
"Fine, I'll stay put," I say in a defeated tone."
"Tell Derek to get in touch with Satomi for me," Brett tells Stiles. "We need to warn my pack so no one else gets killed."
"I will," Stiles nods as he hops into his jeep again.
We watch as Stiles pulls out of my driveway and down the road to the high school. When I see that he's out of sight I look over to Brett. "Okay, let's go," I say as I make my way toward the street.
"Woah, woah, woah, where do you think you're going?" Brett demands as he grabs a hold of my arm to stop me.
"You said you'd help me find Liam so let's go! We are wasting time," I say, impatiently.
"I meant after you clean yourself up and eat something," he tells me.
"We don't have time for that."
"Lily, at this rate you'll be killing yourself just to find him," he replies. "You need to take care of yourself before your brother sometimes. He's 15. He can take care of himself. Plus he has Scott and Mason looking for him. I trust Scott. I know he's doing all he can to make sure his beta is safe."
"But-"
"No buts," he tells me. "Get in the shower, princess, or I won't hesitate to shower you myself!" He smirks at that last part and I shoot a glare at him. He just smirks wider as I let him drag me up to my front door.
***
I stand under the spray of the hot shower feeling the steam on my face. Showering is always my thinking time where I mull things over since my last shower. The three main things on my mind right now are that Liam is missing and people probably want him dead, Brett Talbot is a werewolf and was almost killed by one of my friends who happened to be a wanted criminal, and the fact that Brett Talbot is sitting downstairs in my living room while I'm up here showering.
Also there's the fact that Brett Talbot, who has always been known to bully me and Liam, is actually being tolerable and, dare I say, nice is really putting me on edge. I know he said that since I kinda saved his life he's being nice to me, but I have an irrational fear that he's up to something.
I step out of the shower and dry off. I quickly blow dry my hair so it's only damp and get dressed in jean shorts and a new Beacon Hills High School t-shirt. Walking downstairs, I see Brett sprawled out on my couch, sleeping soundly. His wavy hair is messy and his lips are slightly parted as he breathes.
I debate whether or not to wake him up while staring at him in wonder. He looks younger and much more peaceful when he's sleeping. He's not smirking or saying something rude or perverted.
I let him sleep as I make my way to the kitchen. I need something quick and easy to make so we can get out of here. It's lunch time so I decide on making good old peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I set two on the table and walk back in the living room where Brett is still sleeping.
I crouch down to get more on eye level with him he shake his shoulder gently. "Hey, Brett?" I say softly. "Hey, I made sandwiches for us so we can get out of here quickly.
"Huh?" he mutters quietly, his eyes still closed.
"Brett, come on. I made food," I say louder.
"Food?" he mumbles. His eyes flutter open and focus on me. He almost looks shocked for a second, but it happened so fast, I wasn't sure.
"Yeah I just made us PB&J's so it's nothing special," I tell him.
"Five more minutes," he groans and rolls over.
"Brett, I swear to God, I will eat your sandwich if you don't get up," I say. "Then I'll go find Liam myself."
"I'll get up," he says, rolling back over and cracking an eye open. "If you give me a kiss." He smirks at me.
"You wish," I mutter.
"I do," he agrees. "And I hope and I pray."
"Just get up," I groan. I bite my lip in worry about Liam.
As if reading my thoughts he says, "He'll be fine."
God, I hope so.
