The three of us head outside toward the stadium. Brett walks next to me as Malia tags behind looking around at the campus. I can't blame her. It looks like a college campus with all of it's beautiful landscaping and design.
"Oh, I almost forgot," I say, pulling off my backpack to take out Brett's hoodie and hold it out to him. "Here. Thanks for letting me borrow it, and uh, thanks for helping me out with finding Liam."
"No problem," he says. "And hold onto that for me, would you? I don't really have any space for it in my duffel right now. Plus, I think you look hot in my clothes." He whispers the last part, leaning closer to me.
I blush and turn away.
What is this boy doing to me?
"Also, I'm liking the return of the knee socks, Dunbar," he adds. "I missed seeing you in that uniform everyday."
"Fuck off, Talbot," I tell him.
"You know even though I'm half paying attention to you, I can still hear every word you say," Malia pipes up. "If you say anything else weird or creepy I will not hesitate to kick your ass."
"Noted," Brett says with a laugh.
I put the hoodie back in my backpack as we arrive at the stadium. It's much bigger and newer than Beacon Hills' lacrosse field. Plus, the lacrosse team itself is bigger.
Brett parts ways with us and Malia and I make our way to the bleachers.
"Which ones are Matthew and Quinton?" Malia asks me as we sit down. We made sure to sit away from most of the people but still be able to see well.
"Matt is number fourteen and Quinton is thirty two," I tell her, spotting them on the field. I used to watch these practices almost everyday because of Liam.
He had one friend on the team and that was Emmet Lord. Emmet was the only kid that would talk to Liam and apart from his huge crush on Madison, he was an okay guy. I spot him on the field in his number twenty nine jersey holding a long stick in a group of other defenders.
I debate whether or not I should go and talk to him after this, but I decide not to cause I'd need a whole explanation as to why I was back and at a lacrosse practice wearing a school uniform.
Yeah, better not.
The practice goes on uneventfully as Malia and I keep an eye on our two suspects.
The coach finally dismisses the players after a long practice and they all start to head back to the locker room.
Brett pulls off his helmet and looks at us questioningly as if to say "anything?"
I shrug at him and shake my head.
Well this was a waste of my time.
"We should split up," Malia tells me as we exit the bleachers. "You tag Matt and I'll get the other."
"I can't really do anything if Matt is the guy though," I tell her. "I don't have claws."
"I know but you could text me if you see him doing anything suspicious," she tells me. "Actually, no. How about I'll watch those two and you just stick with Brett."
"Why would I need to do that?"
"Cause he totally likes you, but you just need to punch him in the face first to show him who's the boss," she replies.
"What?" I question.
"I've lived as a coyote for the past half of my life and I even can tell," she mutters. "Just watch Brett, just in case one of them decides to attack him in the locker room again.
We get close to the locker room and peak out the door of a classroom across the hall from it since it would look weird to just stand outside the locker room.
We watch as boys exit the room in groups. Malia sneaks out after Matt and Quinton both leave for the parking lot and I am left waiting until Brett comes out.
No one comes out for a five minute period and I'm pretty sure the whole team has left but Brett is still in there.
I have a debate in my head whether to peak in or not. I mean if some one does catch me I'll never been seen at this school again anyway. There could be something really wrong going on in there, but what if there isn't?
I then hear a crash and a yelp of surprise come from the room and I make up my mind quickly. I dart out of the classroom and push open the door of the locker room to see Brett pinning a squirming Emmet to the floor.
"What the hell?" I say.
Brett looks up at me. "He's the one," he says. He nods his head and I look where he directed me to look to see a silver handgun with a black handle on the floor of the room.
"Shit," I mutter under my breath, and I slowly make my way over to the two boys.
"Emmet?" I say softly.
He stops struggling for a second and looks up at me. Shock crosses his face as he recognizes me. "Lily? What are you doing here? Brett's dangerous get out of here. He'll kill us all with his claws and teeth," he yells manically.
"He's not the one who had the gun," I tell the squirming boy. "Why, Emmet? Why did you try to kill Brett?"
"Cause he's a monster!" Emmet spits out. Brett flinches at the last word, but quickly recovers his composure. "He hogs Madison all to himself, but he's a threat. He'll kill her if she gets to close cause all he is is a monster. A beast! He doesn't deserve to live or be in the presence of my sweet Madison. When I heard about the dead pool, I knew I had my chance. I could kill Brett, get rich, and finally have Madison. I took my dad's gun and was planning on killing him today."
I'm speechless as stand in front of the two boys in shock. I stare at the struggling boy in disbelief.
He can't have just said that. That's not Emmet. He wouldn't try to hurt anyone. Also how did he even know Brett is a werewolf?
"How do you know what Brett is?" I ask him.
"How do I know that he's a monster?" He spits out at me.
"No, how you know that he's a werewolf," I tell him. "Tell me."
Emmet shudders and his fists clench as he stares ahead with wide eyes. "I saw him... In the woods one night... Two years ago. It was the full moon so it was bright enough for me to see him for what he was. A monster with fangs and claws. He slashed her open with them and ran off. I needed to call 911 for her."
Questions flood my mind as I try to make sense of his story. I look over at Brett for answers to see him completely frozen, his breathing rapid. His eyes are squeezed shut as if he's in pain.
"Brett?" I say in a whisper.
"The sun, the moon, the truth," he says in a horse whisper. "The sun, the moon, the truth."
He repeats the phrase a few times and his eyes flutter open and look up at me. His eyes fade from yellow to blue.
"We need to get him to the Sheriff," Brett finally says. "Stilinski will be able to deal with him."
"I'll call Stiles to meet us out front and then I'll call Malia," I nod.
***
As promised, Stiles meets us out front in the jeep. Brett restrains Emmet with his extra shirt and we cram him in the backseat along with Brett in the middle and me on Brett's other side.
The drive to the sheriff's station is quiet only interrupted by me explaining what happened to Stiles and Malia.
We then reexplain everything to Stiles' dad.
"Can someone explain to me how this kid got all through school with a gun in his backpack?" The sheriff demands.
"Privacy laws," Stiles mumbles. "And the school doesn't check backpacks when kids get to school. It would take too much time and effort."
"And how am I supposed to explain that this kid brought a gun to school intending to kill the captain of his lacrosse team?"
"Emmet turns out to have more of an obsession with a girl in school named Madison than I thought," I say thoughtfully. "She happens to always be fawning over Brett. He even admitted that he was partially doing this so he could have Madison."
"So jealousy?" Stilinski says not entirely convinced.
"That actually could work," Stiles says. "I mean he even admitted it in front of two witnesses."
"But what about this whole thing that he saw Brett hurting a girl two years ago," the sheriff asks.
I look over at Brett sitting on the bench on the other side of the office. His head is in his hands as if he is ashamed.
"Brett?" I ask. His head snaps up and he looks at me with guilt clouding his blue eyes. "Can you tell us what Emmet saw two years ago?"
Brett swallows and wrings his hands together. "It was only a month after I found out my older brother was killed by hunters. He never harmed anyone and they shot him and left his body in the woods for us to find. After that I was having trouble shifting. I had something planned on the night of the full moon with the girl I was dating at the time. I cancelled on her on short notice and she got worried because I wasn't answering her calls. I went into the forest so no one could find me, but somehow she did. I-"
His voice cracks, and he clenches his fists, squeezing his eyes shut.
"I couldn't control myself," he continues, looking like he's in pain. "She was angry with me, and I got upset. I got violent without wanting to and I hurt her. I then realized what I did, panicked and ran off. I felt like if I stayed I would end up killing her. The next morning, I got a call telling me that she was at the hospital. They claimed it was an animal attack. She never talked to me again and her family moved a few months later."
The room is silent as we all soak in what Brett just told us. I think back to all the times Liam has lost control since Scott bit him.
We had so many close calls during those times, it's just that that girl was in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's not Brett's fault, well in a way, yes it was, but not entirely.
"I-I'm sorry," Brett mutters, standing up. "I have to go." He rushes out of the room, past the deputies' desks, and out the front door.
"Brett!" Stilinski calls after him. "Brett!"
But the young werewolf didn't even glance behind him as he ran out the door.
