The Eye of The Storm | Dave East3,432 words~18 min read

I'm sorry y'all! I had a makeup class to teach earlier so that's why this chapter is up so late...

Surprise at the end though 😏

Later that night: Midnight...

Dave

On the way back from the hospital and to Angel's apartment, we decided to have a very emotional conversation with Kali about what was exactly going on, how she'll be staying with us for now on, and why she won't be seeing her biological mother ever again.

What really surprised us was how she reacted.

She wasn't mad, angry, or sad about the situation or that she wouldn't be seeing Miracle again. She was so happy when we broke everything down to her, that she cried tears of joy. And when I say "cried"... She boohoo cried.

She just kept saying how happy that she actually has a real family now that she knows won't hurt her. And honestly, I'm so glad that we're going forward with adopting her. We know it's not going to be a simple process, but we're definitely up for the challenge.

Angel also decided that it would be best if we spent a couple of nights at my apartment. Just because of the simple fact that she knew Kali's mother or her boyfriend hadn't been caught yet, and they didn't know where I lived.

So, once we got inside her house, we wasted no time packing up some of the kids stuff and loading it up into our cars.

What she really was trying to do was keep me from doing something stupid.

Even though I didn't say anything about retaliating on them, she knew I was planning it all in my head.

When Kali fell asleep, she gave me this long ass drawn out speech about how we should let karma take care of them and how stupid it would be if I did something knowing the police was on their asses.

After breaking down Miracle's door, they found the apartment trashed with all of their clothes missing. The NYPD put Miracle and Geo's names and faces everywhere.

They put them on every news station, all over social media, and even on every radio station.

Angel must've been right about all that karma stuff, because shortly after we had that conversation Officer Joe called us saying that a cashier recognized them when they came into a gas station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and  held them up until police got there.

Miracle and her boyfriend were trying to run, but were unsuccessful and got caught.

All I'm going to say is that they better be happy the police got to them before I could, because I was going to be their karma.

I may be a changed man and all, but no one fucks with my family. Especially not my girls. I'd go crazy if anyone ever messed with Angel, Kairi, Kali, my mom, London, or Stephanie.

Yeah, that's right. Stephanie too.

I know everyone thinks that me and Stephanie hate each other (which is true; we really do hate each other), but I love Steph.

She's like the younger sibling that you hate your parents had. So you pick on them, make them cry, and get on their nerves all the time. But let somebody else try to do it...

[S/N: I'm like this about my little sister. Bitch let somebody else call her stupid; I'm going the fuck off 💀]

I'm just happy that my family can sleep in peace knowing that there's nothing to worry about. And currently, that's exactly what they were doing: getting on my last nerves with all their loud ass snoring.

"Damn Kali! I get Angel snoring, but you snoring louder than her. We gone have to take you to the doctor about that..." I mumbled trying to close her mouth.

"UGGGHHH!" I groaned as I kicked Kali and Angel's feet off of me for the BILLIONTH TIME TONIGHT.

I'm in the middle, and I don't even know how I got here. When we first got in the bed, Kali was in the middle.

I'm tired, irritated, and uncomfortable as hell. Not only that, but I have this very strong craving for seafood that I've never had before.

Turning over on my left side, I put my head into Angel's neck and rubbed my hand around her belly in circular motions.

"Mmmm, David get back! I don't feel like sucking no suckers tonight now..." She pushed my hand off of her stomach.

"Angel, you pregnant or something?" I asked putting my hand back on her belly.

"Ugh, no David. Why? I'm tired of you trying to wish pregnancy on me."

"Because I got a big ass craving for some crab legs or something." I frowned at the back of her  neck.

"Well go get some, and leave me alone!" She said sternly.

"Well, I was just wondering if you could give me some of your stuff and it'll make the cravings go away..." I mumbled to her hesitantly.

"Lies you tell. My stuff don't smell or taste like no damn seafood." "Yes it do."

"Well I'll tell you what, if my shit smell or taste anything like an ocean, you shoal be eating it."

"It's 'a', not 'an'." I tried to correct her.

"It's 'an' dumbass. You use 'a' before words that start with a consonant sound and 'an' before words that start with a vowel sound. It's the sound that determines if you use 'a' or 'an'. Not the first letter of the next word."

"Well, my teachers always said it depended on the first letter of the next word." I began to fiddle with a string that was hanging from her dark purple jumbo bonnet.

"Well they failed yo- w-what schools you went to? Because our children won't be attending those. And don't think I don't know what you doing David. You're trying to make me stay up with you because you can't get any sleep, and It's not going to work." I looked around the dark room feeling defeated.

Damn she's smart...

"It's working now though isn't it?" I asked quickly, only to earn another loud groan from her.

"David, leave me the fuck alone! If I have to tell you again, I'ma pinch the fuck out of your arm." I whined and shook her right shoulder vigorously.

"Uggggghhh, babe get up! I want seaf- AHHHHH OWWWWW!" I cried out in pain feeling her pinch and twist my right nipple.

I quickly pried her fingers off of my chest.

"THE FUCK YOU DO THAT FOR?!" I mugged her while rubbing my nipple.

"Dave, you are a grown ass man! If you want crab legs, then go get some!" She shouted with her back still turned towards me.

"Angel, it's 12:30 in the fucking morning! Where the fuck am I gonna find crab legs?!" I asked with an attitude.

"Walmart is open 24 hours a day. Buy some and cook them." Her smart ass replied. I shook my head and climbed over her, getting out of the bed.

"Nah, I'm finna go to Juicy Seafood. At least they cook the shit for you." I said as I picked up my blue jacket off the dresser and slid my black Gucci slides on.

[S/N: I went to a seafood restaurant for the first time Saturday for my birthday, and it was so good yo 🤤 I just wish my friends were there with me 🙁]

Juicy Seafood was a bomb ass restaurant that Stephanie took us to late one night when we all first met. It's hard to find restaurants that do seafood boils in New York that are actually good.

I walked over to the nightstand and dug in her beige Neverfull bag for her keys.

"And I'm taking your car too." I put them in the left pocket of my grey sweatpants and continued to dig in her purse for some strawberry Mentos.

"Oh bitch I got insurance, and bring me back a bag! I want 1 lbs of Snow Crab legs, 1/2 lbs of crawfish, 1/2 lbs of shrimp with no head, and I know corn and potatoes come with it already. So don't cheat me out any of my food." I slid a pack of them into my pocket.

"Bitch, I'm not bring you shit back." I mumbled and stood over her. "Alright, I'm finna go. Give me a kiss."

She lifted her head up a little and puckered her lips. "Mmmmmmmuah" I said leaning down pecking them.

"Damn Angel, yo breath stank." I grimaced as I wiped my lips off with the back of my hand.

"Get the fuck outta here." She said sleepily into her pillow.

I walked over to Snoring Kali's side of the bed and pecked her small mouth. "My bay bayyy!" I cooed to her.

"Alright, love y'all" I called out to them as I walked out of the bedroom door, slightly closing it behind me.

"We love you too..." I heard Angel say from behind the door.

I scrunched my face up while walking down the stairs, still feeling all of the pain from when Angel pinched my nipple.

"Her baldheaded ass play to much. With that big ass purple trash bag on her head." I whispered as I made my way to the door.

As soon as I grabbed the doorknob, a soft sweet voice from behind me made me stop everything I was doing.

"Daddy?"

I turned around in absolute shock seeing Kali standing in the middle of the walk way with her  long baby pink bunny robe on her body and matching slippers on her feet.

"Daddy, where are you going?" She asked as she rubbed the eye that wasn't hurt.

"Umm, I'm going to go get some food baby. I thought you were sleeping." I furrowed my eyebrows at her.

"Can I go with you Daddy? Please?" She gave me the cutest puppy dog eyes I've ever seen.

"Ummmm..." I looked at the apartment trying to decide if I should let her come with me or not.

It's really late, and she really should be in bed resting right now... Awe, what the hell? How could ever say no to that adorable little face?

"Sure baby, come on."

She slowly walked in front of me and put her hands up. "Pick me up. I wanna go up."

Leaning down, I groaned as I picked her up from her underarms. Her laying her head down on my shoulder and holding onto me by my neck made my heart extremely warm.

"Alright, lets go fat mama." I said opening up the front door.

***

"Ohhhhhhhhoooooo, oh no she don't! Oh no she don't! Oh no she! Ohhhhhhhhoooooo, oh no she don't! Oh no she don't! Oh no she! Wondering what's on your miinddd, guess you like the simple tyype!" I chuckled looking over to the front seat at Kali singing along to She Don't by Ella Mai.

When we first got in the car we were listening to India by Lil Durk, so I'm not even sure how we got to this song or how it even got on my phone.

Angel must've put it on there.

Whether she did or didn't, I'm not complaining. I don't mind hearing Kali sing to the top of her lungs the rest of the way to the restaurant.

5 minuets later...

We both sighed as we walked into Juicy Seafood, taking in the amazing aroma of food that filled the entire building.

"The shmell in here is making my tummy growl Daddy." Kali frowned patting her stomach through her robe.

I picked her up and sat her down on the bench that was in the lobby.

"Awe baby, just sit right here. I already called in the orders, so we should be in and out." I grabbed the hood that was on her robe and put it on her head.

"Mmkayyy." She said kicking her feet, watching me go up to the register.

A young Caucasian teenager was standing behind it. His facial expression was showing nothing but sadness, but once he saw me he quickly smiled.

"Hi! Welcome to Juicy Seafood! I'm Josh, how may I help you today? Or tonight rather." Both of us chuckled at his nervousness.

"Wassup Josh. I had a call-in order." I said digging in my pockets and pulling out my Louis Vuitton wallet.

"Okay, what's the name?" He began typing on the computer.

"Dave East" I opened my wallet and pulled out my credit card.

He stopped typing and looked at me like he saw a ghost or something. I furrowed my eyebrows at him and turned around, looking behind me.

The hell wrong with him?

"A-Are you okay?" I asked in a concerned tone. He slowly nodded his head at me.

"Uh, yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. It's just I'm a really big fan of you. I follow you and your family on social media, and I work out at your gym all the time!" He replied back excitedly.

I raised my eyebrows at him and drew my head back at him.

People see me out in public and recognize me from social media all the time, but they never referred to themselves as a "fan". I see them as way more than just a "fan".

"Awe, thank you man! I really appreciate that..." I said back to him genuinely.

"You're welcome! My boss should be bringing your food out now!" He said to me smiling.

"Alright great! How much would it be?" He looked back at the computer. "Your total is $36.00"

Just as I was about to hand him my card, I felt a strong tug at the bottom of my pants leg.

"Daddy wait!" Kali yelled at me.

"What?! What is it baby?" I looked around the room frantically, automatically thinking the absolute worst.

"You can't pay with that! That's not money." She said smartly with her arms crossed. Josh and I snickered at her a little.

"Oh it's not?" I asked. "Nope, it's not."

"Alrightttttt... Let me show you something." I stuck my card into the credit card terminal. "Can you see?" I asked her as I put my pin number into the machine.

"Yeah, I can see. I'm watching you." She said with her neck stretched out, making me laugh.

"Hey, I'm just making sure! You know you ain't hit your growth spurt yet so..." I mumbled as I waited for the card to approve.

I then heard the three buzzes and removed the card from the slot. Josh smiled handing me my receipt.

"Ahhhhhh haaaaa!" I waved it around in her face with my tongue out.

"Hmph" She pushed the receipt out of her face and turned her head in the opposite direction.

"We gotta teach you about money and currency babygirl." I rubbed the top of her curly afro.

"Daddy, when is Kai coming back home?" She asked looking up at me. I glared at all the bruises on her face.

All I could think about was how much pain she was in when Miracle and her boyfriend were hitting her.

"She'll be back tomorrow. Why? You miss her?" I softly touched the knot on the side of her head.

"Yeah..." She poked her lip out. "I'm sure she misses you too Chunky B-"

"Josh! JOSHUA! I thought we told you to clean those toilets!" I looked up confused seeing a white woman standing there with two bags of food in her hands.

She must be his manager...

"I-I was going to, b-but a customer w-walked in." Josh stuttered at her.

"I don't care who's out here! When I ask you to do something you do it right then! Do I make myself clear?" He nodded his head fast.

"Yes, yes ma'am..." She sat the bags down on the counter and disappeared into the back of the restaurant.

"That was really mean..." I heard Kali whisper to herself.

Reaching up under the counter, he sighed as he pulled out two big brown paper bags.

"Josh, how old are?" He double bagged the food. "Me? Oh, I'm 18."

"You still in high school?" I asked putting my credit card back into my wallet and pulling out one of my business cards.

"No sir. I graduated early, but I do takes classes at New York state durning the day." I slid my wallet back into my pocket and handed him the card.

"Listen Josh, you seem like a really cool kid and a hard, dedicated worker. If you're looking for a new job, you can come work at my gym. We'll work around your class schedule, and it'll pay you wayyy more than what you're making here." His mouth dropped.

"A-Are you serious?!" I nodded my head.

"Yeah! I'll call my hiring manager Dante and let him know that you're coming in for an interview. How does 5:00 PM tomorrow sound?"

"That's perfect... Oh my goodness. Thank you so much..." Tears welled up in his eyes.

"You're welcome! Come on Chunky." I said taking the bags of food off of the counter and held the door open with my back.

"Bye!" Kali waved goodbye at Josh and walked out the door.

"Bye you guys! Thank you again!" He shouted back before the door shut slowly behind us.

Angel

"Kali must be with Dave." I mumbled as I looked to the right of me not seeing her small body.

I felt around in the bed for my phone. I grabbed it from under my pillow and pressed the home button.

1:06 AM

"They should've been back by now..." Throwing it back down on the bed, I struggled trying to get the heavy Versace covers off of my body.

"This is why I hate spending the night here. Damn, thick ass sheets." My body shivered as it hit the cool air.

I got out of the huge bed and proceeded to make my way downstairs to check and see if Dave and Kali were home yet. Stopping at the bottom of the stairs, I heard the small voice that belonged to my baby.

"Angel said we shouldn't drink these because they're bad for you..."

I immediately got angry peeping over the railing seeing her and Dave laying on the living floor with the bags of food in front of them, drinking Sprites.

"Well ANGEL'S sleeping so we can do whatever we want." He shrugged and took a sip of his canned drink.

"I sure did." I said sternly with my arms crossed.

They both jumped at sound of my voice and looked up at me like they were deer caught in headlights.

"Now go put them back." I walked over to him and laid down beside him. He scoffed and shook his head at me.

"No. We already opened them." He took another sip and rolled his eyes at me.

"And how y'all gonna start eating with out me?!" I whined looking at their mouths seeing all of the sauce that was on their lips.

"We just started, but we mayyyyy have to start all over again." Kali said with her eyes really wide.

"Why K?" Dave asked taking a bite out of his potato.

She got up and dusted her hands off. "Because I have to tee-tee."

"Don't forget to wash your hands Chunky!" I called out to her, watching her hop up the stairs.

"Heardddd juuuu!" Dave and I snickered at her sounding exactly like him.

"You're already rubbing off on her." I said shaking my head.

"Angel, Kali called me Daddy for the first time earlier before we left to get the food..." My head snapped in his direction and squinted my eyes at him.

"David you're not going to have this one. I already beat you to it." He chuckled at me nervously.

"What do you mean?" He asked.

"You're not going to be her favorite parent. I am. You may have trapped Kairi already, but you won't have Kali." I stated in a very serious tone, causing him to scoff and pick up another shrimp out of his bag.

"Yeahhhh, we'll see about that..." He looked back up at me with the biggest smirk on his face.

"We sure will." I nodded my head with full confidence.
