Angel

It's my second day being in the hospital and I'm so ready to get out of here. Just one more day. One more day and I'll be out of here...

Everyone's been by to see me and my baby. Even Dave's friends stop by.

Dave hasn't left my side. He's been sitting in that chair beside my bed, holding and talking to Kairi. He won't put her down. He sleeps with her on his chest. She's attached to him already.

I smiled watching him interact with her. He looked up at me. "Look who's up Kairi.. Mommy!" He got up and walked over to the bed.

He placed a kiss on my forehead. "How you feeling mama?" I yawned. "I'm good. Tired."

I furrowed my eyebrows, looking around the room. "Where Steph and Jd?"

"Steph went to work and Jd ugly ass over there." He pointed to the couch across the room.

Jd looked up from his phone. "Bitch yo daddy ugly." Dave chuckled. "On God... That nigga ugly as fuck." We all laughed.

There was a slight knock at the door and Steph skipped in looking so cute in her bubblegum pink medical scrubs from my line.

I gasped at her. "Hey best friend! Do you like my uniform?" She smiled and did a 360 spin.

"Yessss, oh my gosh you look so cute! And it hugs your curves just right!" Steph gained happy weight in the all the right places and she was looking so good.

"Thank you! All the nurses keep asking me when's your line coming out." She went over and sat down in Jd's lap.

I rolled my eyes. "Tell they asses to be patient. But you look so good Steph. You look so well put together, and smart, and-"

"Civilized?" Dave cut me off and snickered.

Steph stood up and walked over to him. "Bitch you better be glad you holding my niece..." He drew back and stood up. He laid her carefully in my arms and turned back to Stephanie, pulling his pants up.

"Ohhh my goddddd! Y'all don't get tired of fighting?" Me and Jd exclaimed in unison.

"Whatchu wanna do nigga?" Steph said to Dave, sizing him up. "You know what Steph, Ian even tryna fight you. You win yo." He waved her off.

"Yeah nigga, cause you KNOW I'll beat you the fuck up." She pointed at him. They both side eyed each other as they sat back down.

"What the fuck you doing in here anyway? Ain't you supposed to be working?" He asked her.

"Man I'm on break." She kicked her feet up on Jaceyon's lap.

"Yeah right." We all said.

There was another knock at the door. "Angel, it's Dr. Bryant!" The voice said from behind the door.

Stephanie made an "O" shape with her mouth. She got up and hid on the side of the couch.

"Umm, come in!" I said hesitantly. He came in with Edible Arrangements and a huge smile from ear to ear.

Now I can't lie, Dr. Bryant was a handsome man. He was tall, dark skin, buff, educated, sparking personality, had a beautiful smile, and long dreadlocks that you could braid for days.

For him to be 50 years old, he damn sure didn't look it.

"Hi everyone! Congratulations Mama!" He came over and chuckled as he side hugged me.

"Thank you Dr. Bryant! Ooo is that for me?" My eyes grew wide at the fruit basket. "Yes, yes they are." He placed them on the tray table.

"You know I love Edible Arrangements.." I whined. "I know! That's why I brought it for you. At first I said I was gonna get you some flowers. But then I said nah." We both laughed.

He caught a glimpse of Kairi. "Is this her? Oh my goodness Angel she's beautiful... You and Dad did such a great job."

"Thank you!" Me and Dave both said at the same time.

"Have you seen Nurse Latamore? I've been looking all over for her." He pulled out his phone and put it up to his ear.

"N-" Before I could say anything further, a phone rung throughout the silent room. We all tried to fake sneeze and cough to cover it up.

"Dr. Bryant where you going? What you doing?" We said in unison as he walked over to the side of the couch.

"UUUUUU HUH! I caught yo ass didn't I?!" He nodded his head at Stephanie. She got up.

"Mannnn look here Dr. Bryant, I'm on break!" She brushed her clothes off.

"Yo break start at 10:15!" He exclaimed to her.

"Nigga it's 10:21!" She pointed at her Apple Watch. He side eyed her. "Mm..."

"Yeah, now apologize! I'm hurt..." She faked sad. "Girl shut the hell up. You ain't sad." He waved her off and shook his head at her.

"You so irresponsible... Do you do anything at home?"

"Yes! Yes I do. I cook, clean, wash clothes, cater to my man, and I still find time to suck his dick. And I go to work, come home, and do it all over again." She smiled.

He looked at her in disgust. "Stephanie, we didn't need to know all of that..."

She shrugged. "Well, you asked. And how the fuck you find me anyway?"

"You already know how..."

"Nurse Howard." Me, him, and Steph said at the same time.

"Ooh I should've known! That bitch run her mouth to much..." She shook her head.

"You ain't lying about that... I wanted to slap that bitch when she told my ex wife about me Nurse Beverly because I didn't want her ass."

"Wait... EX?" Me and Stephanie said. "Y'all got a divorce?" I was shocked.

He nodded his head. "Yeah. We've been divorced for almost a year now."

"Dr. Bryant why didn't you tell us? I'm surprised..." I said looking down at Kairi.

He shrugged his shoulders. "Didn't wanna talk about it I guess."

"I don't know what you so surprised for. Hell he was cheating on her. Stephanie said tilting her head.

"That damn woman didn't want me. She married me because of what kind of life I could give her. And she was cheating on me too. I'm the one who filled for divorce. I just started 'cheating' back when we became separated."

"Mmmmmhm whatever." Stephanie said rolling her eyes, not convinced.

"Shut up Stephanie. Yo ass need to go to my office and file them papers like I told you to do earlier." She sucked her teeth.

"AND I TOLD YOU that I am NOT your personal assistant. And you gone stop telling me what to do like you own or some. My daddy sitting right there." We laughed as she pointed to Jd.

"Hey brother, I don't know how you put up with her. She a handful." Dr. Bryant said to Jaceyon.

He just smirked. "She's my handful though..."

"Have you been seeing anyone since your divorce? I've noticed you and Nurse Beverly stopped messing around." I asked putting Kairi's pacifier in her mouth.

"No I haven't. I've slowed down a lot. But I did see this beautiful woman walk out of the hospital yesterday and this morning! I should've gotten her number or something..." He said to me.

"Well, what she look like?" Stephanie asked getting off of Jd's lap and walking over to us.

"She was probably about 5'1, dark skin, had a nice frame, she looked mature, a beautiful face, long curly dark brown hair..." He said staring off into space.

My mom came into the room flashing her beautiful smile. Dave stood up and help her with all her bags.

"Hi everyone! Okay I got everything that everyone asked for.." She handed everyone their snacks. They all said thank you.

Dr. Bryant repeatedly tapped us. "Y'all that's the woman I saw!" He whispered to me and Steph.

"And Angel, I went to Victoria Secret to get you some warm pajamas because I know you said you couldn't find any of your warm ones. So, I brought you these." She pulled out some silk PINK pajamas.

"And I went shopping for my sunshine! I may have over done it..." She said hesitantly as she pulled out different outfits.

"Oooo these are cute mom! Thank you!" I exclaimed.

She drew her head back at me calling her mom. Honestly, it slipped out. My brain wasn't ready to call her mom yet, but I guess my heart was saying other wise.

"You're welcome..." We smiled at each other.

"Nigga say some!" I heard Stephanie whispered to Dr. Bryant. I decided to speak up.

"Um, mom this is Clarence Bryant." I said introducing him. "Uh DR. Clarence Bryant." He said putting emphasis on 'Dr'. He held his hand out to shake her hand.

She shook it. "Oh, um hi..." She said dryly and turned back to me. Stephanie snickered.

Dr. Bryant isn't used to that. He's used to women throwing themselves at him.

"Come on Dr. Bryant! Let's get back to work. I'll be back on my lunch break! See you guys later!" Stephanie said. I chuckled as she dragged Dr. Bryant out the room.

Later that night...

I just got home from a long day of work and to say I was tired was an understatement.

I opened the door to Jd's house with my key. I walked upstairs to find him in the bed, smoking a blunt.

"Hey baby!" He put the blunt out and got out the bed. I met him halfway. "I missed you..." He wrapped his arms around me and kissed my lips.

"Hey..." I whispered, smelling the weed on him. "How was your day?"

"It was okay..." I stepped out of his embrace and sat my purse down on the nightstand. "You hungry?" He asked me.

I walked over to the dresser and pulled out a shirt and some panties. "Um, no..."

I walked into the bathroom and cut the shower on.

I was playing on my phone when Stephanie slid into the bed. I set it down on the nightstand and turned towards her, but instead she turned her back towards me.

I scrunched my face up looking around the room. She never sleeps with her back towards me.

"I-I don't know babe..." I said softly. She stared at the ceiling. "I took a pregnancy test today after work. Just to see what it would say. I thought I could've been pregnant...."

"What did it say?" I asked softly. "It was negative..." She whispered. I felt my heart break.

"After I sat there for a while, I began to feel... Embarrassed and stupid. How could I think I was pregnant if I can't get pregnant... Then I started to think about my childhood, and how young I was when my parents started beating me. And how my father would kick me repeatedly in my stomach." She turned to me with glossy eyes.

"Jaceyon, I want a baby. I wanna have kids. I want to experience that. Seeing Angel look at Kairi the way she does makes my heart flutter. I wanna feel that unconditional love... Why can't I have kids? Why me?" She broke down crying.

I pulled her into my chest and held her tight. I then began to cry. I thought she might've been pregnant too...

"Baby, it's okay... Everything's okay... We gonna have kids babe, you just have to be patient... Okay? I love you so much mama... Just stop crying... Please stop crying..." I said as I cried harder, squeezing her tighter.

"Why me?" She said in between her sobs.

After minutes of her breaking down, she finally calmed down. I wiped her tears. "Babe, we gonna have kids one day okay? We'll go see doctors. We'll do whatever we need to do. I don't care how much it costs. Okay? I promise. I'm not giving up on this." I kissed her lips.

She nodded her head. "Mmmkay...." She said softly.
