Carson looked around her new room, her fingers brushing against the brand new furniture, the wooden shelves holding all her books and notes, the wooden desk with pictures scattered around the surface, and the boxes still shoved in the corner after months, her being too lazy to throw them out earlier. Moving to England with Mr. Barnes had been one of the best decisions she'd made in her life. She'd left her father a note, a letter explaining that she would be leaving and never returning. She knew he probably wouldn't read it, he hadn't even noticed her absence, but she felt the need to explain herself nonetheless. Bruce had been able to come with them, but Mr. Barnes insisted on getting the girl an animal of her own. What Carson hadn't noticed, though, was the fact that Mr. Barnes hadn't simply gotten her a dog. The building the lived it allowed Carson her own, separate flat. A sixteen year old girl living on her own with no one but a dog wasn't exactly an everyday thing, but Mr. Barnes had insisted, giving her a small flat on the top floor, and he was living just a floor below her. It wasn't at all fancy, or luxurious. It was small and cozy, with a window bench seat that viewed over the city. It truly was everything she'd ever hoped for. Her neighbors were very nice as well. An eighteen year old girl named Amelia lived across the hall from her, and a freshman college student, Harrison was next door. Though younger than the two, Carson had been able to make friends with them, and Harrison had introduced the girl to his younger brother, Ryan. He had been extremely nice to her as well, and, since the two ended up going to the same school, and become practically siblings.
But today was a better day than most.
Carson and Bradley had kept contact, calling and texting each other nearly everyday. Bradley would be leaving town today, and moving to England, to a house apparently only a twenty minute car ride from the girl's flat. She'd received a message from the boy about an hour ago, saying he was getting on his flight. The two had decided that Carson would be at the airport to help the Baker's with their stuff, but both she and Bradley knew that wasn't the only reason.
A knock came from Carson door, and the blonde tucked her phone in her pocket before opening it, revealing a grinning, messy haired Harrison.
Carson sighed, shaking her head and smiling.
"Haz," she said, "couldn't you and Chloe wait until after you dropped me off at the airport? I swear you look like you just got out of bed."
Harrison laughed as the younger girl went to fix his messy brown locks, no longer embarrassed to look like a wreck in front of the girl. She'd seen him drunk about a hundred times, both her and Amelia always helping him off to his apartment. They'd also both seen him after he'd supposedly hung out with his girlfriend. If 'a complete mess' didn't define him, then they didn't know what did.
Once Carson had mostly fixed the boy's hair, they started walking down the hall and towards the elevator.
"By the way, Lia's coming too," Harrison said, using Amelia's well-known nickname. "She asked me to drop her off at Mac's place. They have to... organize a party, or whatever. Something about their mother coming back from Arizona."
Carson nodded, checking her phone for the time and smiled noticing how strangely punctual they were. Harrison was known for always being late. Literally. She also smiled at the fact that the older boy was willing to drive both her and Amelia around the city. She was thankful for him, and for the fact that the three of them had become like siblings, three messed up teenagers with family problems.
Harrison's mother had cheated on his father multiple times, causing an obvious divorce, but the woman wouldn't stop rubbing her new playmates into her sons' faces. Both him and Ryan were thankful that their father had stayed the same, or as close to that as he could after having lost the woman he loved.
Amelia's mother had died when her little sister, Elly, was born. They'd never known who their father was, so Elly lived with their aunt and uncle whilst Mackenna, the oldest of the three, had found a house during her sophomore year in college.
All their sorrows had brought the three closer together. They were each other's family now.
Amelia was already standing by Harrison's car, and she greeted both of them with a hug before climbing into the passenger's seat, making Carson groan.
"Seriously, Lia? You always get shotgun."
The older girl laughed, grabbing the cable and plugging her phone in, all grudges forgotten as the trio screamed out the lyrics to whatever song was playing until they eventually got to the airport, Carson waving the other two goodbye as she shut the door.
"Are you sure you're alright with getting back?" Harrison asked.
Carson nodded, then turned and walked through the double doors, her heart beating like a drum in her chest. The Baker's were to show up in about fifteen minutes, so Carson texted Ryan to pass the time, letting her fingers type down her stress.
Ryan texted her back a minute later, telling her to calm down and that it was going to be alright. After a few minutes he told her he wanted to meet Bradley to make sure he was 'a proper boyfriend', and when Carson denied, the boy feigned offence, choosing to no longer text her. Carson groaned internally, knowing there was nothing she could do now except wait. Ryan might had been her best friend, but he sure as hell could be annoying at times.
Minutes passed and the blonde was drowning in boredom. That is, until felt felt a pair of arms wrap around her waist, hauling his up and into the air as she shrieked.
"BRADLEY BAKER PUT ME DOWN THIS INSTANT!" She yelled through her laughs, and the moment her feet touched the ground she turned, wrapping her arms around the brown haired boy, who didn't hesitate to hug her back.
The two broke apart, looking at each other. Carson stood in shock for only a second when Bradley's lips pressed against hers completely out of the blue, but she snapped out of her daze, shutting her eyes and kissing him back. Her hands played with the hair at the back of his neck, just like they had back at the cabin. It was only in that moment that Carson realized how somewhat grateful she was for that long, messed up weekend. During that time she realized she could survive.
Maybe she wasn't hellbound after all.
