Chapter 36

Kyle had spent the past few hours going through what was left in the box from her apartment, and she didn’t find anything worthwhile.

As she was picking up the box, she saw a piece of paper she missed and picked it up.

She realized it was one of the letters Viktor had written her mother, but this time, she noticed a return address. She was sure none of the other letters had it.

Kyle quickly put the box out and dug through the box, pulling out the letters.

The letter she picked up from the floor was the only letter that had a return address, and she thought this was the information she was looking for. It was the only lead.

Kyle quickly called Dimitri and asked him to send someone to pick her up; that she needed to talk to both him and Max.

Ellis was sent to pick up Kyle, and while she was heading back because of what she found, Kyle was excited to see Max and Dimitri, even though she was still mad at Max.

“Do you have everything?”

She nodded yes to Ellis as he put her last bag in the trunk.

Kyle and Ellis were on the road for a while when Kyle noticed Ellis was acting nervous.

“What’s wrong?”

“The car behind us has been following us for a while, and the way they speed up and pull back makes me think they’re following us.”

Kyle and Ellis jerked forward as the car behind them hit their bumper.

“There’s a gun in the compartment box. Get it out and keep it with you.” Ellis briefly looked at Kyle. “You’ll be okay. You’re smart.”

“What are you going to do?”

“When I stop, hurry up and get out of the car. Don’t hesitate. Take your phone and leave the dog. You won’t have time to grab her.”

Ellis stopped the car suddenly, and Kyle jumped out quickly, running away from the vehicle. She didn’t make it far when she heard the crash.

Kyle turned around and looked at the crash. Ellis wasn’t moving, and she saw a guy trying to climb out of the other car.

Kyle’s attention was brought back to the car she was previously in when she heard Elliot barking. Elliot jumped out the window and toward her.

Once Elliot got to her, she didn’t waste any more time and ran away from the accident.

Once Kyle thought she was far enough away, she called Dimitri. She told him what happened and where she was, and he promised he would get there as fast as he could.

Max was with Dimitri when she got picked up and taken to a hotel room for the night.

“Are you sure you’re okay, little bee?”

“Yes, I wasn’t in the car. I’ve told you this. Do you have any information on Ellis?”

“You’re still mad at me?”

“Of course I’m still mad at you, Max. You used me.”

“I’m sorry. I fucked up and I know it. Please forgive me.”

“I don’t know if I can, Max. You made me feel cheap. You hurt me physically.”

Max got up and walked over to her. “I’m sorry, I really am. Just give me another chance.”

Kyle wanted to give him another chance, but she wasn’t sure. She wanted to concentrate on one problem at a time, and the first one should be her father.
