The dark night soon came once the sun had already set from the horizon. The sky was gloomy and black, stars were shining behind the ghost of clouds that traveled the heavens like ships. The streets were empty as it was already past 12 in the morning, half an hour close to one. However, in the midst of those quiet roads and dark alleys, footsteps could be heard ascending the stairs.

Taehyun took slow and careful steps on the staircases, his white coat laid neatly over his wrist with a bag on the other. He was too used to coming home this late, sometimes, he doesn't come home to their condominium unit at all.

This was why he wouldn't let Huening Kai wait for him outside the hospital or at home. Sometimes, Huening Kai would be outside the hospital waiting for him. And more often than not, he'd be inside their condominium — wide awake while waiting for him in the living room. Taehyun didn't want that. Huening Kai needed sleep after working all day in the office. Paperwork was already too much for him, he needed rest.

After unlocking the door, the beeping sound echoed through the halls and Taehyun sighed when he walked in. He kicked off his shoes and closed the entrance. Taehyun groggily made his way to the dim-lighted living room and threw his things on the couch.

However, as his gaze made its way through the moonlight-covered room, his eyes then caught sight of a sleeping figure on the sofa. All curled up into a ball while snoring softly. The weight on Taehyun's shoulder was immediately lifted and he held a deep breath in.

"Kai..." muttered Taehyun, he sat on the floor in front of Huening Kai and stared at him. The younger male was peacefully sleeping on the sofa, a plushie clutched closely to his chest.

Taehyun pushed his sleeves back and looked at the time on his wristwatch, it was now exactly one in the morning. Taehyun's gaze shifted towards the window and saw that the moon's rays came crawling down their floor.

With this, Taehyun was about to stand up in an attempt to pull the curtains when he felt a loose grip around his hand.

"Tyun..." Kai rasped out, he rubbed his eyes and stared at Taehyun with a sleepy gaze.

Taehyun's chest tightened at that, "I'm home."

"You sure are," Kai smiled, "Have you eaten yet? I can heat up something for you to eat."

Kai was about to stand up from the sofa when Taehyun pulled him back down, "It's fine. I already ate at work. The nurse gave me something to eat."

"Oh?" Kai raised a brow, "Nurse? Who?"

Taehyun shrugged, "No one. Just some random nurse, that's all."

Feeling the disinterest in Taehyun's voice when he said that, Kai just let it go. Taehyun wasn't someone to make a big deal out of everything, he only does that with Huening Kai. Even if Kai would only have a paper cut, Taehyun would already scold him while covering his small cut. Huening Kai found it heartwarming.

"What are you doing here anyway?" Asked Taehyun as he sat on the sofa with him, "You should have slept in the bedroom. It's warmer there."

Huening Kai only grinned and rubbed Taehyun's belly, he leaned against his shoulder and said, "You're the warmest. I like you better."

Taehyun chuckled and played with Kai's hair, "Let's sleep? You must be tired from waiting. I told you to always sleep after finishing your work. You don't have to wait for me, don't be stubborn."

"I'd rather wait," Kai whispered. His response would always be the same. Again, and again, and again — it would never change. He never got tired of repeating it every single night when Taehyun would ask that question.

"How was your day...?" Taehyun whispered back. The quiet exchange of words during a cold night. The growing darkness had always been trustworthy.

Kai hummed, "Nothing changed. This time of the day is still my favorite."

Taehyun giggled and rested his head on Kai's, "I can say the same."

"Are you sure you're not hungry though?" Kai lifted his gaze to look at Taehyun who stared at him.

"Why? Are you the one who's hungry, Hyuka?" Taehyun raised a teasing eyebrow and Kai only pouted.

"I'm hungry," Kai mumbled.

Taehyun couldn't help but to shake his head with a fond smile, "Didn't you eat?"

"I did," Kai straightened his back, "But I didn't eat much since I wanted to eat with you."

A sigh escaped Taehyun's lips, "I told you to eat before me. Let's go and eat."

"I wanted to wait for you," Kai let out a tsk before grabbing Taehyun's wrist, "Let's eat, I'm so hungry I could eat a whole dinosaur."

"Let's not do that," Taehyun chuckled and allowed Kai to pull him into the kitchen. "And don't wait for me next time, please?" Taehyun asked as soon as they sat down on the stools.

Kai spared him a glance before grabbing a few packs of ramen, "What did I tell you last time?"

Taehyun stared at him as he tried to recall, "You'll...you'll wait for me like how the moon awaits its turn to rise and see her beloved ocean?"

Kai smiled and opened the refrigerator, its cold light spreading across the floor — his eyes held the moon; the corners of his lips held the stars; Taehyun loved looking at him. "And I'll wait for you like how the sun awaits its turn to rise again and be with the sky."

The younger male placed the packs on the counter, he stood on the other side in front of Taehyun. He tilted his head and ruffled Taehyun's hair, "Would you do the same?"

"Expect me to do the same," Taehyun smiled while staring at his lover.

As the refrigerator was left open by the corner, the two continued to stare at each other in the middle of the night. Cold, warm — it didn't matter. At one in the morning, at 11 in the evening — they didn't care. Going home would always be their favorite time of the day.

"I'll be waiting."
