After breakfast, everyone lingered over coffee. Anne suspected that no one wanted to leave each otherâs company just yet.
Meryn was tackling her second stack of pancakes when she turned to Kendrick. âBy the way, Keelan-From-the-Future, you keep showing up wearing different clothes, but you didnât have any luggage. Youâve set up a lab, but didnât have anything delivered, how did you get all your stuff?â
Kendrick smiled and detached a small pouch from his belt. He held it up swinging from his fingers. âItâs bigger on the inside.â
Meryn dropped her fork and stared. âCan I see?â
Kendrick nodded, and Meryn ran around the table. He set the pouch in her hands and watched as she opened it.
A look a disappointment bloomed on her face. âItâs empty.â
Kendrick winked and cupped his hands around hers and whispered a word.
Merynâs eyes widened. âHoly shit balls! Itâs like a whole castle in here. Wait! Go back! Was that a library?â
Kendrick nodded. âItâs called the Bag of Wishes. I can place anything I want inside, regardless of shape, size, or weight.â
Meryn looked at his clothes. âSo you have a closet in here too?â
He shook his head. âNo, theseâ he plucked at his blazer, âare the Gentlemenâs Garments. I received them as a present from the queen of the fae.â
She smiled. âLike my dress.â
Kendrick tilted his head. âYouâre the new owner of the Gown of Ãire Danu?â
She bopped her head yes and kept tilting the pouch side to side.
âInteresting,â he murmured.
Elizabeth snorted. âYou have no idea.â
Meryn placed the bag in his hands and turned to Aiden. âI want one.â
Aidenâs mouth dropped. âBaby, I canât just go out and buy you one. Enchanted fae items are extremely rare.â
Meryn walked back to her chair and sat down. âI need it in my life.â
Aiden turned to Darian who was chuckling. Darian nodded at Aiden. âIâll see what I can do.â
Meryn smiled brightly at Darian. âThank you big brother-cousin.â
Darian looked around the table. âWe never really stood a chance, did we?â
The men all shook their heads. Kendrick laughed. âNever has a truer statement been spoken. Women always have the upper hand, always.â
Meryn pumped her fist in the air. âBecause we kick ass!â
Kendrick smiled slyly. âItâs because you have the magic bean.â
Meryn frowned as Aiden choked on his coffee. âWhat magic bean?â
Elizabeth blushed. âOh, dear.â
Anne had to suppress a giggle.
âI only know of two magic beans: the cocoa bean and the coffee bean,â Meryn insisted.
Kendrick clucked his tongue. âCommander, you have been remiss in your duties.â
Around the table, the other men were trying not to laugh and failing horribly.
Finally, Gavriel took pity on the confused Meryn and leaned in to whisper what the third magic bean was. Merynâs reaction caught Anne by surprise when she erupted into giggles.
âHa, ha, ha, magic bean! Hey baby, want to swallow my magic bean later?â Meryn leered up at her mate.
Aiden smirked and shook his head before leaning down to nip Meryn on the neck. âOnly if youâre very, very good,â he promised.
Meryn reached over her head and traced a halo before folding her hands in front of her as if in prayer. âIâm always good.â
Colton chuckled. âHey Meryn, did you have to get a custom-made halo to fit between those devil horns?â he teased.
Anne lifted her hand and tapped her lips. âWhat do you think Meryn? We could sew his lips shut in his sleep.â
Merynâs eyes brightened, and she turned to Rheia. âYou donât need to kiss him for a while do you?â
Rheia shrugged. âI could go without.â
Coltonâs mouth dropped as he cuddled his mate. âDarlinâ, you wouldnât let them do that to me, would you?â
Rheia just winked at Meryn and Anne.
Meryn leaned back in her chair. âFace it gentlemen, youâre no longer the baddest motherfuckers in the room anymore.â
Aiden kissed the side of Merynâs head. âDonât let the other warriors find out.â
Anne smiled. âDonât worry, your secret is safe with us,â she promised, and the other women laughed. Anne finally felt like she belonged in this house with these people.
Kendrick cleared his throat. âNot to put a damper on things butâ¦â
Colton smiled ruefully. âBut we still have some pretty serious allegations against us.â
Kendrick set his empty cup down. âThanks to Anneâs suggestion, I may have a plan for that. But that wasnât what I was talking about. I was talking about the perimeter.â
Aiden blinked. âBut the perimeter is the one good thing that came from this whole mess. The ferals havenât been able to breach it since it went up; weâre safe.â
Kendrick twisted the cup in his hands. âMaybe Iâm being pessimistic, but when something looks too good to be true, it usually is.â
Amelia turned to him. âHow can the perimeter be a bad thing?â
Kendrick stopped turning the cup. âWhat if the perimeter wasnât designed to keep you safe by keeping the ferals out. What if it was designed to keep the ferals out to keep safe?â
Aiden frowned. âI donât like where this is going.â
Kendrick looked at the men. âOver the centuries, Iâve seen many different types of magic, but Iâve never seen anything like this perimeter. No one in the city is stepping forward to lay claim to it, and if any of the warriors had done it, they would have told you right away. So, if no one in the city cast the spell, who did?â
Colton swallowed, looking ill. âThe enemy.â
Kendrick nodded. âWhat if the perimeter is keeping the ferals out because when the perimeter goes down it will shrink into the center of the city, stripping peopleâs souls as the magic collapses? If ferals are in the city when that happens, their precious necklaces could be destroyed.â
Aiden thumped his fingers on the table. âDo you have any proof?â
Kendrick shook his head. âNo, but I thought it would be irresponsible if I didnât put the theory forward. Youâre included in more high-level meetings than I am. If you hear something that may explain a portion of my theory, at least you could make the connection.â
Aiden stood and stretched his arms up over his head. âIâll keep an ear out. In the meantime, we have drills, gentlemen.â
Kendrick stood beside her. âI may join you.â
Aiden looked pleased. âI thought you didnât do drills.â
âI donât, but I need to speak to a few of your men.â
Aiden laughed. âIâll get you on the course eventually.â
Amelia shook her head vehemently. âYou really donât want that, Aiden.â
Aidenâs brows snapped together. âWhy?â
Amelia squirmed in her chair. âDo you remember that time Caiden had to request that the council approve renovations to the Storm Keep obstacle course?â
Aiden nodded. âHe said that the men had gotten used to theâ¦â he looked over at Kendrick.
Kendrick smirked back at the commander.
Aiden turned toward the door. âNever mind. Come on men.â He leaned down, kissed Meryn on the top of her head, and walked toward the door.
Anne watched as the other men around the table said goodbye to their mates. Kendrick stood and looked down at her. âWhen you check on Keelan, stay away from the table. If you see anything glowing bright red, evacuate the house and come get me.â
âI heard that!â Aiden yelled from the foyer.
Kendrick winked at her then turned to Meryn. âTell your little friend that he has access to Keelanâs room. The warding doesnât apply to sprites.â
Meryn reached up and laid a hand on her shoulder. âThanks Kendrick. Felix has been spending a lot of time with Keelan.â
Anne looked at Meryn but didnât see anything. âSprite?â
One second there was nothing, the next, a tiny fairy sat on Merynâs shoulder, fluttering his wings. He waved and she waved back. When she blinked, he was gone again.
She turned to Kendrick. He leaned down, and their eyes met. She was surprised at their intensity. She thought he was about to kiss her, but at the last moment, he moved his head so that he whispered in her ear, âThank you for sticking up for me. No one has done such a thing in a very long time. Iâll give you a treat later. Have fun with the girls.â He ruffled her hair and walked out behind Darian.
Once the men were gone, the room was silent. Meryn gulped down the last of her orange juice. âSo, I donât feel like adulting today. Letâs watch anime and eat snacks.â
Rheia, Elizabeth, and Amelia looked at each other and grinned.
Amelia nodded. âThat sounds like a great idea.â She turned and looked at Anne. âIn this youâll be our Yoda.â
Anne frowned. âHe was the green one right?â
Across the table, Meryn began making sounds as if she was having an epileptic fit.
Amelia wrapped an arm around her. âIgnore her. Beth usually handles Meryn when sheâs like this. Letâs hit the kitchen and get some post-breakfast snack foods.â
Anne looked over her shoulder to cast a worried glance at Meryn. She figured if Rheia wasnât concerned, she wouldnât be either. Maybe she was getting used to the dynamics of this house.
*****
âWhy am I here again?â the dark haired young man asked. After checking on Keelan, Anne was formally introduced to Jaxon and Noah when the women invaded command central to take over the sixty-five inch television.
âBecause Iâd miss you if you werenât here,â Meryn answered.
âYou do realize this isnât in English right?â Jaxon asked.
âYup, now hush. I think Tezuka is about to confess to Yuri.â Meryn threw popcorn at Jaxon who laughed.
Noah sat on the couch with his legs drawn up, a look of enthrallment on his face. He had been immediately sucked into the story line and had teared up a time or two already at Yuriâs plight. Anne had to admit, Noah had to be the prettiest boy she had ever met. If he was drawn to be in an anime, he would be a , or beautiful boy.
Anne had already watched nearly half of this season with Kendrick so her attention was solely on the tiny sprite who had made himself visible after some coaxing from Meryn. He now sat on Anneâs shoulder, watching the anime along with them. Anne thought Felix was absolutely adorable. When he saw that her hands were shaking as she went to hold him, he smiled up at her shyly, and she was lost.
Meryn laughed and kept tapping away on her phone. Anne had no clue how Meryn was keeping up with the subtitles while on her phone, but every comment she made about the story had been right, so she must be paying more attention than Anne realized.
Rheia pointed to the screen. âWhat are those?â
Anne looked up and smiled. âThose are . They are round, made from a flour-based batter filled with minced octopus, pickled ginger, green onions and sometimes tempura scraps. The dressing is to die for; itâs like a mix between Worcestershire sauce and mayo. I havenât had any since moving back to Madison.â
âRyuu!â The women yelled at the same time Meryn paused the anime.
A moment later, Ryuu appeared in the doorway. â
? Is everything okay?â
Meryn turned around on her knees to peer over the back of the sofa. âCan you make those?â She pointed behind her at the screen.
Ryuu looked up and a look of pleasant surprise crossed his face. âOf course.â
âOh, and ramen?â Rheia asked licking her lips.
âI would love to try the .â Amelia rubbed her stomach.
Ryuuâs mouth twitched in a smile. âHow about I plan a night where you can try multiple dishes from my homeland?â
Meryn threw her fist in the air. âYes!â
Ryuu bowed. âI have a friend back home I can contact. He should be able to send the necessary supplies via a fae trade portal. Now, if you ladies will excuse me, I will bring in mid-morning tea in just a moment.â He closed the door behind him.
Amelia stared at the closed door for a second. âYou know, I bet he gets homesick. Maybe we should have Japanese food once a week.â
Meryn turned and sat back down. âThatâs a great idea. I want to try those octopus balls.â
Anne and Amelia cringed. â
.â They both corrected Meryn at the same time.
Meryn shrugged and smiled at her phone. âThis is great, Iâm getting so many friend requests.â She paused and looked at them. âDo octopi have balls?â
Elizabeth shook her head. âOh, Meryn.â
Meryn grinned evilly and turned back to her phone.
Everyoneâs attention turned back to the anime. After a few minutes, Elizabethâs phone began to ring. She took it out of her pocket, looked down, and frowned. âUncle? Hello, Uncle. What! No! No. Never mind. Stop laughing! Goodbye!â Elizabeth wheeled on Meryn. âWhy did you put that you and I were in a relationship on Facebook? All of Noctem Falls is buzzing that I am in a lesbian relationship with the Unit Commanderâs mate!â
Meryn looked puzzled. âWe are in a relationship, youâre my sister.â
Elizabeth simply fell over onto her side and buried her face in the pillows. Rheia, Jaxon, and Noah had their hands over their mouths trying not to laugh. Amelia was at Elizabethâs side rubbing her back. âThere, there. It canât be that bad.â
Elizabeth sat back up. âTake it down now.â
Meryn shook her head. âI think itâs too late. I have eight hundred and seven comments and three thousand shares.â
âGive me that!â Elizabeth snatched Merynâs phone and began to scroll. Her face went pale for a moment and she looked up. âYou can refer to your shifter friends as your âfurriesâ!â
âMan down! Man down!â Jaxon laughed, pointing at Rheia who was wheezing on the floor. Noah was beet-red and having trouble drawing breath.
Amelia swallowed hard and looked like she was fighting not to smile. âShe did what?â
Meryn went to get her phone back, but Beth stood and held it over her head. Meryn put her hands on her hips. âWhy is that wrong?â
Anne cleared her throat. âMeryn the term âfurryâ refers to a subculture that is interested in anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities. Itâs also a type of sexual fetish where people take the interest into the bedroom.â
Meryn blinked. âSo, technically, Iâm still right.â
âI give up! Iâm deleting your account.â Elizabeth tapped on Merynâs phone.
Meryn shrugged. âI can always post on Aidenâs account.â
Amelia sighed. âI always wanted to be a shifter. Becoming an animal must be liberating.â
Defeated, Elizabeth paused and handed the phone back to Meryn. âIt gets old after a while.â She sat down, looking a bit shell-shocked. âLetâs resume our anime watching. I donât feel like adulting anymore, either; the rest of the paranormal world can just get along without me today.â
âSounds like I brought tea just in time,â Ryuu said as he pushed his serving cart into the room.
Noah paused the anime and turned to them, his eyes bright. âI didnât know they had anime where two boys fall in love.â
Elizabeth perked up. âIt doesnât hurt that they are so pretty.â
Noah blushed and turned to Anne. âCan you recommend some more?â
Anne nodded eagerly. âOf course.â
Noah sighed, a dreamy look on his face. âToo bad you donât see that sort of thing in real life.â
Jaxon bumped shoulders with his friend. âWhat about Sydney and Justice?â
Noah thought about it for a moment. âThey are the exception.â
Meryn looked up at her squire, a mischievous look on her face. âWhat about Kendrick and Ryuu?â
Rheia spit out the tea she had just sipped. Amelia offered her a towel and looked at Meryn. âYou canât keep doing this to Rheia,â she said sternly.
Meryn looked over at her friend. âSorry, Rheia.â Instantly, her attention was back to her squire. âSo?â
Ryuu didnât bat an eye. He continued to pour their tea. âA man or woman would be very lucky indeed to find themselves with .â
Meryn rubbed her hands together. âSounds promising. Kendrick did offer sexual favors for coffee.â
Noah was wide-eyed and stared up at the squire. âThey would make an amazing couple.â
Elizabeth sipped her tea. âYou may be on to something, Meryn.â
Anne accepted her cup of tea from Ryuu. His eyes met hers, and he winked. Anne turned away, her cheeks on fire. Was it evident to the others how she felt? That the mention of Kendrick with anyone else was enough to make her feel ill? Ryuu laid a hand on her shoulder briefly before turning back to the teacart to resume serving.
She thought of Kendrick and the dream sheâd had the night before. Was that the reason why he joined the men today? So he could ask Darian about her dream? She sipped her unsweetened green tea and hoped Kendrick found an answer, one way or another.
*****
Kendrick felt a chill run down his spine. He stopped mid-step and shuddered.
Darian gave him a funny look from where he hung doing inverted sit-ups. âAre you well?â
Kendrick rubbed his arms. âSomeone must be talking about me.â He walked over to Darian and leaned against the workout station.
âDid I just see you talking to my brother?â Darian asked.
âYes, I needed to ask a favor of him.â
Darian sat up and hopped off the bench. âBut that wasnât why you joined us today was it?â
Kendrick glanced back at the house. âNo, I need to talk to you about something.â
âOf course. Whatâs on your mind?â
âKeelan,â Kendrick said shortly.
Darian exhaled slowly. âWhat can I tell you?â
âDid he say anything about Anne?â
Darianâs eyes narrowed. âHow do you mean?â
Kendrick looked up at Darian, giving him the full weight of his stare. âDid Keelan say anything about them being mates?â
Darian ran a hand through his hair. âMaybe.â He looked around to see if anyone was listening. âRight before he⦠it happened, Keelan confessed to me that he wasnât attracted to Anne at all.â
Kendrickâs heart began to pound against his breastbone. âWhat did you tell him?â
âI asked him if he had tried being attracted to her, he said, yes, of course, but there was nothing between them. He said they got along great, but he was not drawn to her at all.â
Kendrick shook his head. âBut he dreamt of her.â It all came back to this. If Keelan had had a mating dream of Anne, then she wasnât his.
Darian nodded. âAnd a good thing he did, too; otherwise, she might be dead.â
Kendrick grabbed Darianâs upper arms and shook him. âWhat do you mean?â
Darian took a step back to dislodge himself from Kendrickâs grasp. âCalm down; sheâs unharmed. Keelan dreamt that there was something wrong with her car and she died when it went off the road and slammed into a tree. When she took the car in at his insistence, they found that there was something wrong with her brakes.â
Kendrick stared at the large fae. âGods!â he whispered harshly. âIt wasnât mating dreams at all; he was having premonitions to keep her safe.â
Darian blinked, then blinked again. âYou know, I think you may be right. The dream he had about her car wasnât the first premonition that he had about Anne.â
âHe had dreamt of her before?â
Darian nodded. âThough I donât think he remembered. The only reason I remembered is because of what Anne told us when we met her. She recalled the first time she met Aiden. He saved her from being kidnapped, but we wouldnât have been in town that day if not for Keelanâs insistence that we had to be there.â Darian frowned. âBut why Anne? Why was Keelan getting so many premonitions about Anne if she wasnât his mate.â
Darianâs question had Kendrick reeling, because the answer was too unfair to be true. âBecause he was protecting his brotherâs mate,â he whispered, staring down at the ground. Around him, the day went as usual, but Kendrick was trapped in this moment of realization.
He heard Darian suck in his breath. âOh, Gods, sheâs your mate!â
Kendrick looked up and laughed harshly at Darianâs expression. âYou donât get it.â
Darian stepped forward and laid a hand on his shoulder. âTalk to me Kendrick; your eyes are flashing silver. Iâm not a witch, but I know that canât be good.â
Kendrick pulled all of emotions into his core. He took a deep breath and began channeling the anger and hopelessness down through his legs and into the ground. Only when the urge to destroy everything around him receded did he open his eyes to look at his brotherâs friend. âTwo hundred years ago, I had a premonition that Keelan would die as a member of the Alpha Unit. When he told me he had volunteered to come to Lycaonia, I forbade him to come. For the first time in his life, he defied me. He said that he had his own reasons for coming to Lycaonia. I always believed that he had put your wellbeing as his fellow warriors above mine as his brother, and I was angry. I didnât understand until this morning how much you care for each other. What if Fate had to use Keelan to save my mate because I couldnât leave Storm Keep? What if itâs my fault he was hurt?â
Kendrick stared at the faeâs feet, unable to risk the look of condemnation that he was sure was in Darianâs eyes.
âKendrick?â
Kendrick looked up just in time to see a large fist flying toward his head. When the punch connected, he flew backward and ended up staring up at the sky. Darian walked to where he lay and leaned over him. âFeeling better?â
Kendrick blinked. His jaw was killing him but his head was clear. âYes, actually, I am feeling much better, thank you. Hand up?â
Darian reached down and pulled Kendrick up. âYou know the only reason youâre not buried up to your neck is because I really did need someone to put me in my place?â
Darian nodded. âItâs what brothers do for each other.â
Kendrick stopped brushing off his clothes and looked up. âBrothers?â
âThatâs how this works, Kendrick.â Darian waved his arm and pointed to where the unit members were laughing, teasing, and playfully knocking each other senseless. âMeryn was right; weâre family, and family looks after each other. I think youâve been alone too long, my friend.â
Kendrick didnât know what to say. âSo weâre brothers and friends?â
Darian laughed. âWould you let anyone else get away with sucker punching you to knock some sense into you?â
Kendrick smiled ruefully. âI can honestly say that has never happened before. Usually, I am the one doing the punching.â
Darian leaned against the bench. âUnder normal circumstances, you are probably the one best suited for dealing with these types of situations. But this is about Keelan and Anne, so youâre not really thinking clearly. Nevertheless, I am discovering that not thinking clearly is the norm when dealing with mates.â Darianâs eyes flicked back to the house. âThey drive you insane. They donât listen; the very thought of them hurt makes you want to kill, but life without them would be no life at all.â
âIâve only had Keelan for so long. I could get used to having more brothers,â Kendrick admitted.
Darianâs look became devious. âThen as a brother, could you do me a favor?â
Kendrick grinned. âDepends, what do you have in mind?â
Darian pointed across the training yard where a white haired warrior was sparring with his unit. âThatâs Sascha. He and Keelan would go back and forth with pranks. Sascha liked turning Keelan purple and Keelan liked electrocuting Sascha. Maybe we should zap him for Keelan.â
âI like the way you think. How about this?â Kendrick brought up his power hand and twirled his finger in the air. The air around Sascha began to move, picking up rock and dirt. Sascha looked around wildly and saw Kendrick and Darian laughing.
âThatâs not funny, assholes!â Sascha went to walk through the seemingly harmless breeze and stopped short when a spark flew. âHey!â
The men were laughing uproariously as they walked over to Sascha. âI heard you liked playing pranks on my baby brother, so I decided to join in the fun so you donât miss him too much.â
Sascha growled as the air calmed down. Tentatively, he tested the area around him and breathed a sigh of relief when he wasnât shocked again. âHa, ha, very funny. I do miss Keelan though, the little guy always gave as good as he got.â He glared at Kendrick. âNo more sparks, Iâm getting zapped enough on patrol; the damn perimeter gets me every time.â The men laughed at Saschaâs bad luck.
Kendrick chuckled. âIâll add that to my list of things to investigate about the perimeter.â He turned and shook hands with Darian. âThank you again. I know what I have to do now.â He looked back at the house. âCan you watch over them while Iâm away?â Kendrick looked around and spotted a timid-looking Basil standing on the sidelines. He waved the young man over.
Darian released his hand and nodded. âOf course, where are you going?â
âInto the city, there are some errands I need to run. Iâll be back in about an hour or so. Oh, and tell Aiden Iâll be using Basil as an apprentice for a while. I forgot to mention it at breakfast.â He turned to Basil. âYouâre coming with me. Weâll hit the magic supply stores in town to pick up whatâs needed for you to conduct your own experiments.â
Basil stared. âMy wallet is in the barracks.â
Kendrick raised an eyebrow. âWhat kind of master would I be if I didnât provide my apprentice with the basics he needed to learn?â
Basil beamed up at him, and in that moment, reminded him so much of Keelan his heart ached. He cleared his throat and laid a hand on the young witchâs shoulder.
Darian nodded at them then looked around frowning. âWait. Whereâs your car?â
Kendrick smirked. âWho said anything about driving?â
Kendrick took a deep breath and began moving. With each step they took, his magic condensed long distances into short, manageable ones. To Darian and the others, he and Basil would have simply disappeared. He would make his way into town to meet with some of the residents, pick up supplies for Basil, and then he would return to the Alpha estate to claim his mate.
