Some truths couldnât be swallowed no matter how hard you tried.
âI donât hate you.â Evelyn said.
Fabianâs eyes shook as he stared at Evelynâs trembling lips.
âAnd Your Majesty now has done nothing wrong to meâ¦â¦you never did.â
Two years had passed since Evelyn left Fabian at the age of twenty. He was a very busy husband, and he was terrible at showing his emotions, but thatâs all.
âThen, why?â Fabian looked at Evelyn with sore eyes. But Evelyn couldnât tell him, because that misfortune hadnât happened in her life yet. âWhat has made us like this? He asked with a voice filled with emptiness.
âYour Majesty, Itâs all over now.â
âItâs not over yet. Itâs a painful thing thatâs constantly repeated for me now.â
âStill.. â¦you promised.â Evelyn tried to shake off his hand, but Fabian held her wrist tighter. âEven if Your Majesty knows the reason, our future wonât change.â
Fabian ended up saying it out loud, laughing, âI thought so. Thatâs why, I said I was wrong. âWhen he felt that Evelynâs love for him had completely disappeared, he witnessed the truth.
âThe childâs eyes were full of love. When you begged me to save him, you was so desperate that you felt like dying.â
âThatâsâ¦â
âYou love him, my child.â he said.
Evelynâs heart dropped with a thump.
âYou used to look at me like that child.â
She thought she would be fine now. Evelyn thought that her feelings became dull, and her love had faded.
âIsnât he the child weâve got because of love?â
When she became a mother, Evelyn thought that her womanâs heart would disappear.
âAt least, he exists because you once loved me â¦â¦ Isnât he that child?â
Evelyn always thought Fabian was a strong man. She felt that he could forget everything because being in pain wasnât his job. Sadness was something that only Evelyn could swallow. She felt that her misfortunes and sorrows were all her own.
But, Evelyn was wrong.
âNow I have nothing left to give up. Canât you be honest with me for a while?â Fabian caught Evelynâs tired look. He had been patient with it so far and had endured it well. But as soon as he saw her face turned so pale, Fabian was overwhelmed with emotion.
âWeâve been through a lot of hardships.â
Fabian said âwe.â
âEven though our reason might be different, the hearts will be the same.â His hands gently covered the back of Evelynâs hand. It was the same touch as when they first met, and it was as hot as being embraced in his arms.
Evelyn couldnât bear it, and she kept crying. âYou still sayâ¦.. we?â If Fabian spoke to her so kindly like this in her previous life, Evelyn wouldnât have made this choice. No, if the one in front of her right now was Fabian of the past, then she could hate him.
âItâs because itâs âweâ. Itâs hard for each otherâ¦.donât you think?â
Evelyn had a complicated mind now. She felt so confused. Which was the real Fabian? If this was his true self, why did Evelyn lose her child twice, get sick and die at 30?
âI canât help it. I wonât change my mind. Once tied up together by a relationship, I couldnât be with anyone elseâ¦â¦.What about you?ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
ââ¦â¦Yes?â
âDonât you always have a hard time looking back at the past?â
The undeniable words pierced Evelynâs heart. She couldnât disagree with him. Fabian clearly saw Evelynâs eyes trembling at that moment.
âHave we been honest with each other until this moment, even once, since we broke up under the golden wood tree? â¦.. I donât remember that.â
âDivorce has no future,â she said.
âIâm talking about now. Every moment weâre living and seeing each other. It exists no matter what you say.â Fabian told her. It was also at this very moment. Evelyn, trapped in the past, didnât want to admit it, but the two had come this far.
âNow, just as our child exists. Iâve changed. Just as youâve changed, Evelyn. It wasnât a short time.â
The promise to keep a secret didnât work between the two. Fabian already knew, so Evelyn couldnât go back. And indeed everything that Evelyn remembered had changed from the previous life.
âYour Majesty, I canât give you anything or any answer.â
Fabian slowly closed his eyes, âBut you still donât resist me. Thatâs enough for me.â
Evelyn avoided his gaze in embarrassment. As if he didnât care, Fabian leaned his head back on Evelynâs lap like what he always did in the past, when he spent time alone at the Empressâs residence. âJust for a moment, let me stay like this.â Fabianâs voice seemed so tired that she couldnât push him away. As he said, they already had a hard time.
âSome things donât change.â His voice rang softly. Only Evelynâs body scent and warmth didnât change. Just her awkward movements and her thin body that hurt his heart. âI ⦠⦠have I changed a lot?â asked Fabian.
âYes.â Evelyn answered him in silence. Fabian had changed a lot since they met again after the divorce. He did something that Evelyn couldnât have imagined before, and he no longer hid his feelings. It was all enough to say that the present Fabian was a different person.
âYesâ¦..â Fabian responded in a low voice. A gentle night wind blew, passing through his tired and scattered hair. âYou tooâ¦..â With his head still buried, Fabian stretched out his hand and touched Evelynâs cheek. Then, he put his hand on her head. It was the same old habit.â Alone⦠â¦you must have a hard time.â
He was jealous of Evelynâs bright smile. Fabian hated her because she looked radiant and happy.
âYou alone ⦠have raised my child so well.â
Fabianâs heartfelt words made Evelyn tearful.
âYou must be struggled a lot while did it by yourself.â
Evelyn shook her head, âI wasnât alone.â If she were really alone, she wouldnât have been able to come this far. Apart from Fabianâs pain, the time she gave birth and raised Adrian was full of happiness.
âI was happy to have Adrian. I mean it.â
âEven though youâve become so thin?â Fabian raised his head and looked at Evelyn. For a moment, he felt a little annoyed with Adrian when he saw Evelyn was so thin. But Fabian actually knew it. That the biggest cause of Evelynâs hardship was him.
âIs he more precious than your life?â
âYes.â
Fabian smiled bitterly when she answered without hesitation. âThatâs something I envy â¦â¦â It seemed that at some point, Fabianâs tough side seemed to be softened. It might be the affection of the past or similar warmth, that settled in this place.
âI will live for that child. Iâve already decided that way.â Evelyn said as calmly as she could. âSoâ¦..I canât be by your side. Iâm sorry.â
âI seeâ¦â Even though Fabian had heard it a thousand times, still, her rejection was so painful. There was a bitter taste in his mouth. It was a taste he had never known before.
âYour Majestyâ¦.are you going to take the child away from me?â Evelyn mustered up her courage to ask. She wanted to hear Fabianâs answer instead of always feeling scared and anxious.
âWhy do you think like that?â he asked.
âThatâsâ¦.. Itâs Empireâs law.â
And because until now Fabian still hadnât let go of Evelyn. There was no better bait than a child to capture Evelyn. How could a brilliant Emperor like Fabian miss such an opportunity?
âEvelynâ¦â¦ youâre not good at lying.â Fabian stared at Evelyn, then gave a long sigh, âAndâ¦. Donât make that face.â His low voice resonated like a calm consolation as his fierce atmosphere disappeared. âItâs like Iâm tormenting youâ¦.. If I intended to take that child as a hostage to take you back, I have done it long ago.â
Again, the man in front of her was unfamiliar.
âIf I wanted to take you by force, I wouldnât have been waiting for two years, with or without a child.â Fabian laughed bitterly as she watched Evelyn blinked her eyes as if she couldnât think of that.
âWhy. Do you still see me as a bad guy?â
âNo, I donât mean thatâ¦â¦â
Fabian took a deep breath. He had a lot of things to tell, but he couldnât say it, so he just kept sighing as he was disappointed. âIâve already accepted the reality that youâre unhappy with me, and that you donât want to be with me.â He didnât know why, but that was for sure. âMaybe, thatâs my fault.â
Fabianâs heartless words made Evelynâs heart broke.
âMaybe, marriage wasnât right for me from the beginning. No, itâs not maybe but itâs will.â Only now did Fabian pour out his late feelings. âLooking back, my mother also used to say that she feels uncomfortable breathing when sheâs beside the Emperor. You said that Imperial men are worse than stone floors. Even then I couldnât understand what that meant.â
The Empress Dowager always disgusted when talking about her Emperor-husband. The reluctance expression on his motherâs face was so vivid that Fabian quickly realized that he wasnât the fruit of their love.
âPerhaps, I had a side that caught your breath too.â
Evelyn also remembered the Empress Dowager. She was a nervous and cold woman. And she was a bad mother. Now, after she had a child, Evelyn could see it more clearly.
âNo.â
Fabianâs eyes were shaken by her unexpected answer.
âItâs not.â It wasnât a foolish regret. Evelyn just thought that some facts should never be blurred. âIâve never minded Your Majesty. And Iâve never been reluctant to do it.â
She loved him. It was love at one time.
âAdrian was born on my wish.â Evelyn must not spoil that precious fact because such a mistake was irreversible. âHe was a child that was born because of love. That fact doesnât change.â
Fabian should have known that, as he found out the childâs existence.
âI knowâ¦..â His voice sounded relieved, âThat childâ¦. Heâs happy.â Fabian never had such happiness. Now, he could understand Evelynâs story in the garden of the Felice Kingdom. At that time, Evelyn asked about his childhood who grew up as the Emperorâs heir. And she looked at Fabian with sorrowful eyes.
âEvelynâ¦. Do you really think I wonât be able to protect that happiness?â Now Fabian started to put together Evelynâs puzzle-like reasons little by little. As an Emperor, there was no such thing like incompetence. He wasnât a man who couldnât protect his own children.
âYour Majesty, itâs not your fault. But⦠â¦yes. Me and Adrian canât be happy in the Imperial family.â
Fabian no longer answered. He only looked deeply at Evelyn and closed his eyes again, unable to hide his tiredness.
âBut, isnât it too much to not give me a chance.â
Evelyn lowered her head at his depressed voice. It was very unfair to Fabian right now, but both of them knew what it was like to grow up as heir to the Imperial family. Fabian never realized it was a misfortune, but it would be different for Adrian.
âForgive meâ¦. but the fact that youâre an Emperor remains unchanged.â
âSo, what you said to me in the Felice garden was sincere.â he said.
Evelyn admitted her mistake. She wasnât supposed to be an Empress. That was her fault.
Only
âSo, thatâs what you meant when you asked me for a divorce and would quit the Empress.â Whatever it was, Fabian was frustrated that he was late to realize it. If he had known Evelynâs thoughts from the beginning, he wouldnât have let her go this far.
âBut, Isnât it too mean to think and decide it on your own?â
âI know, butâ¦â¦.â Evelyn felt sad. âI know, but Your Majesty canât quit.â
It was the only thing the Emperor couldnât do. It was a law that the Imperial Emperor couldnât abdicate until the end of his life. Once Fabian was crowned, he couldnât live another life other than as an Emperor.
âIf youâre so sorry, you should stay by my side.â
Evelyn smiled bitterly when she heard Fabianâs sad words.
It was time to end this position. As if he had an inkling about it, Fabian rose to his feet reluctantly. And the time they could stay by each otherâs side was over.
