âMy queen. My empress.â He holds out his hand and when I place my palm in his, he kisses my wedding ring. âMy wife.â He enfolds my hand between his much larger ones. âYou are beautiful.â
He looks up at me with naked adoration in his eyes. Thereâs something else there. Something possessive and primal. Something that sets off a flurry of heat pulsing through my veins and turns my pussy into a miasma of need.
âRyot,â I whisper.
His hold on my hand tightens. Then, he moves one hand to my hip in a gesture that signals ownership.
âYou take my breath away.â He scans my features, that look in his eyes turning into something fierce. âYou make me want to scoop you up and hide you away from the world so no one else can see you.â
I smile.
âYou make me want to declare to the world that youâre mine and that if any bastard dares to touch a hair on your head, Iâll make them wish theyâd never been born.â
âOh, Ryot.â Those emotions, which seem to be so close to the surface whenever he is around, threaten to spill over.
âIf I could wrap you up in cotton wool and protect you so no one could ever get to you, I would.â
The pain in his voice sears through any remaining barriers I have left. I cup his cheek. âYou make me feel confident and protected. If it werenât for you, Iâm not sure Iâd have gotten this far. You rescued me from Gavinâ ââ
ââDonât say that arseholeâs name.â
ââand stood up for me against my own father. I didnât realize how much I was putting myself down until you came into my life.â
He rises to his feet and takes me in his arms. âYou make me want to be a better man, Empress.â
I cup his cheek. âYou make meâ¦feel much more than I thought I could.â
He frowns. âIs that a bad thing?â
âItâs unexpected.â
âSame.â His lips quirk. âYou make me want to kiss you, taste you, and draw in your scent until youâre in my veins and in my very cells. You make me hope. You make meâ¦believe.â A shadow crosses his features. âIf I could give you my heartâ¦â
I touch his lips. âI understand. Jane was a part of your life. No matter what went down between the two of you, you were married to her, and that will not change.â
The furrow between his eyebrows deepens. âI never felt like this about her. Thisâ¦deeply. Thisâ¦soul-shatteringly vulnerable. I never felt like if something were to happen to her, I would die. Itâs why, when her platoon was taken out, I felt so guilty. And finding out she was pregnant with someone elseâs child, when weâd married only because I thought she was carrying my child, felt like a cruel joke. Much as I want to get over it, I donât think I have. Much as the chemistry between the two of us is like nothing Iâve ever experienced before, and even though the connection I feel with you is searingâ ââ
ââthereâs something stopping you from committing fully,â I complete his statement.
I should feel deeply uncomfortable that my new husband is still not fully on board with us. That heâs never once said that he loves me. That heâs not over his past. That what happened to him with his previous marriage might have traumatized him so much that heâs unable to lean into the attachment he claims to feel with me. I should feel uneasy that Iâm going into this marriage not knowing if Iâll have one in a few months. Or indeed, that within the year, we might no longer be married. But I know heâs the one for me, enough to take this chance.
And a deeper part of me, the part which sees past his doubts and uncertainty, the part which is able to look beyond his words to the unsaid emotions I see in his eyes and writ into every angle of his body⦠That instinct feels confident that itâs only a matter of time before he acknowledges his feelings for me.
Itâs there in his protectiveness, his possessiveness, and in the way he follows me with his gaze. He never lets me out of his sight when Iâm with him. And when he isnât with me, itâs because heâs doing his best to keep me safe. No one has ever been this concerned about me. No one else can be this attentive to me. No, heâs the one for me, and Iâm confident heâll work it out for himself soon.
âI want you, Empress. I need you with every fiber of my being, but I fear I might be so badly burned from what happened that Iâll never able to love you the way you should be.â
My heart thuds into my ribcage. Itâs the first time heâs used the L-word, even if itâs to say that he might not be able to love me. The very fact that heâs thinking about it sends a rush of endorphins through my bloodstream.
âYou need to work through everything youâve been through. I understand,â I say softly.
His clenches his lips together so tightly the edges turn white. âI want you to be able to live your life on your terms. Unencumbered by your duty to your country and your father.â He drags his fingers through his hair, a look of consternation on his features. âI want you to fall in love and choose your own path. I just donât know if Iâm capable of giving you the love you deserve. I donât want to hurt you, Empress.â
A warmth squeezes my chest. He cares for me. Heâs half in love with me, and heâs not even aware. Itâs only a matter of time before he comes to realize it too. Itâd better be before our year together is up.
âYou wonât.â I place my hand over our joined palms. âJust by being yourself and by being with me, you make everything seem possible.â
He takes both of my hands in his, brings them to his mouth, and kisses my fingertips. âI donât deserve you. Iâll do everything possible to protect you. I promise you, Iâll track down whoever is after you and make sure they never bother you again.â
âI believe you.â
He moves my hands to one palm, and the other he wraps around my waist and brings me in. âYou make me forget about everything else. You make me want to kiss you until youâre breathless.â
âPromises, promises,â I say lightly.
His eyes flash, then he tugs me, so I squeak and fall into him. He brings his mouth to mine, and when I part my lips, he sweeps his tongue in. He kisses me, and I feel the sensation all the way to the tips of my toes. My stomach trembles, and my pussy clenches. My scalp feels like a thousand sparks are zinging across it. I hold onto him as he deepens the kiss, and itâs so intense, so passionate, so fervent, I feel like Iâm about to catch fire.
Someone clears their throat behind us, and I freeze. But my husband doesnât stop. He continues to kiss me, and when I push at his shoulder, he merely raises his head and stares into my eyes. My breath comes in short gasps as my chest rises and falls. Ryotâs features, on the other hand, are granite hard. His jaw is set. His green eyes though, have turned to silver, and the nerve that pulses at his temple tells me heâs far from unmoved by the kiss. This man⦠The more he tries to hide his emotions, the more I recognize them. âI see you,â I say softly. âI see you, Ryot.â
His gaze sharpens. His nostrils flare. He bends and nips at my lower lip, and I shudder.
âSorry to cut in you, guys, but there are three hundred VVIPs waiting for you, and no one is allowed to have a drink until you guys arrive, so if you wouldnât mind hurryingâ¦â Tylerâs amused voice reaches us.
A giggle bubbles up, and it feels so right. Ryotâs features relax, a spark of amusement lighting up his eyes.
âI do mind,â he throws over his shoulder, then leans back and surveys my features.
âIs my lipstickââ I raise my hand, but he grabs it. âYou look perfect. A little flushed and like youâve been kissed. Perfect.â He links his fingers through mine. âShall we?â
