The sound of sizzling filled the air. Coiny stared idly at the ceiling, sat atop the kitchen counter. It was taking all of Firey's willpower to focus on the damn beef rather than Coiny's legs and neck and how he'd looked staring down at him in the bathroom.
I am so hopeless.
"Sooo," Coiny started, swinging his legs and hitting the cabinet behind them. It created and oddly rhythmic sound, Firey doubted Coiny could hear it himself over the sizzling.
"So?"
Coiny chewed his lip, trying to plan his words out. Is this too soon? Should he have brought it up sooner? Firey is in charge of their food right now, he could totally poison him. "I.. uhm." He inhaled. "W-what was with you and Leafy? You said that was like, fake, right?"
Shit fuck. That was Not what he was supposed to say.
Firey took a second to remember, but when he did his face grew hot and he went back to stirring the beef. "Oh, that? Well uh..."
"You don't need to answer." Coiny rushed, "It- It was a stupid question, sorry. Everyone has their reasons to like- lie about stuff." Coiny thought back to him and Pin, lying about the exact same thing.
He knew Pin had agreed to the facade because she'd hoped it would get her closer to Leafy, but Coiny didn't totally know why he'd come up with it either. At the time, he'd passed it off as being in the heat of the moment, wanting to prove something. Knowing what he knew now, though...
"You.. wouldn't happen to remember what I said after I told you that, right?" Firey risked a glance up at Coiny, his stirring slowed.
"Told me what?"
"That me and Leafy weren't actually dating?" Coiny remembered very well.
"I've never felt something like this before."
Heat rushed to Coiny's face, and he was the one to break their eye contact, rushing to put up a front of contemplation. "O-Oh? Now that you mention it... Nope! I was totally seeing red." Coiny put his hands up and shrugged, hoping he sounded convincing enough.
"Oh? uh, alright." Firey looked away and chewed the inside of his cheek. Why isn't he asking about it then? If he really doesn't remember..
"Hey, Firey?"
Firey let out a small hum as he looked back up at Coiny, feeling as if he was forgetting something.
"About the fight... I'm s-" Coiny paused, glancing down at- Oh that's what he'd forgotten.
Firey muttered a few curses and quickly took the beef off the stove, hoping it wasn't too burnt. So much for trying to show off his subpar cooking skills to his crush-enemy-rival-friend-guy.
Coiny sat, still watching from the counter. "If my tortillas come out crunchy I'm breaking all your windows and letting the rain in."
"W- You have to break my windows to do that?? Just open them?" Firey glanced worried at Coiny, pushing the beef around in the pan to see if it was too far gone.
"...Are you giving me permission?"
"No! And I will throw you back out into the rain if you try anything."
Coiny smirked, sliding off the counter and leaning onto it instead. "You won't." He crossed his arms, smug.
Firey paused and set down his spatula, ceasing all movement. Now, Coiny isn't the best at reading body language, but he's realized that maybe he shouldn't have spoken so soon. Firey turns to look at him, and then they both simultaneously spring to life. Playing tag in Firey's three room apartment, what could go wrong?
Coiny jumps over the back of the couch, nearly knocking it over in the process. "Have mercy!!! It's so fucking cold out there. And I'm injured, you saw it!" Coiny dramatizes, putting the back of his hand to his forehead in a damsel-in-distress type pose.
"Should've thought about that before threatening to break my windows. Get back here!" Coiny sprints off into the hallway, finding himself back in the bathroom. Firey nearly trips over himself trying to catch up to him.
Coiny didn't think to close the door behind him, but he did think to step into the bathtub and grab a shampoo bottle to point at Firey, ready to shoot at any moment.
Firey puts his hands up, as if Coiny posed a real threat to him. "Not my seven dollar bath and body works shampoo! It's kiwi scented!"
"Is it?" Coiny moves the bottle to sniff, and Firey sees his chance.
"Gotcha!" Firey grabs Coiny's wrists, resulting in a push and pull match between the two. Coiny tugs, trying to free himself from Firey's grasp. This seems familiar.
Thunder cracks overhead, and the two pause. Coiny looks into Firey's eyes, feeling a familiar fluttering in his chest. Shit shit look somewhere else! He looks down at his lips.
The lights flicker a few times, and then it all goes dark.
