Chapter 5
Five years later at the airport, the arrival floor was packed with people clutching signs after the plane landed at three oâclock.
A reporter from Epoch Daily rubbed his sore hand. Leaning into his companion, he whispered, âMy hands are killing me⦠Do you reckon the night might be delayed?â
âThatâs unlikely. She informed us before boarding the plane, so it wonât be delayed,â replied his companion.
âGood to know. Say, sheâs from Alenvista and just has spent the past five years abroad, and now sheâs returned for only an ordinary position, but why did the senior editor send us to pick her up?â the reporter pondered aloud.
His companion explained, âHavenât you heard? She spent three years on the frontlines, conducting interviews amidst conflict zones. Sheâs witnessed numerous wars and amassed a wealth of stories. However, for some reason, she couldnât do fieldwork anymore. Rumor has it that something she witnessed on the battlefield compelled her to return and seek psychiatric treatment. Such a pity that her talent had to go to waste. But even as an ordinary employee, she still has potential. Thatâs why the senior editor regards her so highly.â
âI see,â responded the reporter.
âHello.â A gentle voice interrupted their conversation.
Both men paused and looked up to behold a charming visage with flawless skin, blue eyes, and delicate brows. Her p

The reporter hesitated before asking, âAre⦠Are you Ms. Wilcox?â
gaze, bright and gentle,
âYes,â Margaret confirmed with a smile. âActually, thereâs no need to pick me up. I grew up in Alenvista, so I wonât get lost, even after five years abroad.â
âHello, Iâm Colin Whittaker. Well, even though you know the way, picking you up is a nice gesture on our part!â the reporter chuckled as he trailed behind Margaret. Then he leaned in to whisper to his companion, âWhy didnât anyone tell me sheâs so beautiful?â
âShe wonât fall for you. Whatâs the point of mentioning it?â His companion rolled his eyes,
Margaret walked ahead with composure, paying no mind to their exchange.
The trio climbed into the car and left the airport, navigating through the bustling ring road.
Seated by the window, Margaret gazed out after some time, her eyes reflecting complex emotions.
It had been five years since she left. At that time, she had bravely left everything behind to embark on a new chapter of her life. Yet, as she returned to Alenvista, she realized how much she loved and missed her hometown.
Upon arriving at the news agency, the two reporters stepped out, opening the door for Margaret. They couldnât resist stealing repeated glances at Margaretâs captivating visage.
Margaret proceeded directly to the HR Department for a work handover before being escorted to the elevator.
âOur senior editor mentioned you prefer q quiet, so she arranged an office for you,â Colin remarked with a smile.
With a polite but somewhat reserved smile, Margaret nodded. âThank you.â Having spent three years amidst the chaos of the battlefield, she
had grown accustomed to a more rugged approach to life. Hence, she wasnât used to such enthusiasm. âYour senior editorâ¦â
âAh, she is currently interviewing a big shot over there.â Colin gestured in a specific direction.

âClifford? Whatâs he doing here?â Margaret mused.
Noticing Margaretâs blank expression, Colin grinned knowingly. âYou must have heard of him. Itâs Dr. Clifford Huxley, the top surgeon. His clinic has bookings lined up until next spring! We went to great lengths to invite him here.â
A genuine smile tugged at Margaretâs lips as she reflected, âNot only am I familiar with him, but weâre also old friends!
The door swung open, revealing a surprised Clifford stepping out.
His eyes widened as he took in Margaretâs presence. âMargaret! Youâre back!â
Colin watched in astonishment, his mouth hanging open as he observed the interaction between the two old friends. He wisely chose to
remain silent as he thought, âThey seem to be good friends.
âIâm sorry I didnât inform you; it was a sudden decision, Margaret apologized.
Cliffordâs smile softened. âNo n
need to apologize. Itâs wonderful to have you back. How long do you plan to stay?â
Margaretâs expression flickered with uncertainty, and she thought, âHow long indeed? A month? A year? A lifetime?â
Shrugging, she replied, âI donât know.â

âMy interview is wrapped up. Care to join me for a meal?â Clifford suggested.
Margaret glanced at Colin for confirmation.
âAbsolutely, go ahead!â Colin instantly said.
Checking the time, Margaret nodded. âSure.â She missed Alenvistaâs local food.
As they departed, a flurry of gossip ensued within the news agency.
Someone exclaimed, âWhat a bombshell! How does Ms. Wilcox know Clifford? Weâve been on his waiting list for two months just for a mere hour appointment, and he asked her out for a meal just like that?â
The second gossiper chimed in, âDid you notice Dr. Huxleyâs reaction? All the effort I put into my makeup today feels like a wasteâ¦â
Curiosity piqued, the third gossiper queried, âWhat was his expression?â
âHe couldnât take his eyes off Ms. Wilcox! His gaze was practically glowing. Are you blind or stupid?â replied the second gossiper.
The fourth gossiper interjected, âThe most powerful weapon a woman possesses isnât her beauty alone; itâs the captivating allure she exudes with just a single glance. I think Margaretâs that kind of woman.â
The conversation carried on.
Meanwhile, Margaret followed Clifford into the private room of a renowned Japrlumian restaurant.
âYouâre in for a treat today,â he announced cheerfully. âThis place is my favorite; theyâve just received a fresh shipment of seafood from

Blallas today, Straight from the plane to your plate.â
Margaret chuckled. âWhat an honor.â
âTake a look at the menu. What would you like?â Clifford said.
Margaret pushed the menu back with a faint expression. âYou decide.â
As Clifford took the menu, he couldnât help stealing glances at Margaret. Feigning nonchalance, he said, âI heard there was an air crash on the
battlefield after I left, resulting in heavy casualties.â
Margaret froze, casting her gaze downward.
