I should have stayed out of this fucking room. Or at the very least, when I heard the shower running, I should have walked away. Instead, I sat here and listened to her talk to that friend of hers as she fucking washed herself.
Itâs really not all that much to expect your wife to not talk to other men when sheâs naked, is it? I donât care if this relationship is fake. That marriage certificate with our names on it is real as fuck, which makes her my fucking wife.
âAria, trust me when I say this: Every guy has pictured you naked in his head. Donât talk to other men when youâre naked. I donât care if itâs the Pope. If heâs got a dick, donât talk to him when youâre naked. Got it?â
Aria screws up her face. âThis is not happening. Iâm not your child, Santo. You canât order me around and expect me to do everything you say just because you say it.â
âNo, youâre not my child. Youâre my wife,â I correct her.
âFake wife,â she counters.
âThat marriage certificate is real, darling. That ink thatâs dried on it is real. You are my wife, and I wonât have my wife talking to other men when sheâs naked,â I tell her. âItâs not up for discussion.â
âFine. If I canât talk to other men when Iâm naked, then you canât talk to other women when youâre naked either,â Aria fires back.
âEasy. I donât talk to other women in general. Unless you count my sisters-in-law, and I certainly donât talk to them when Iâm naked.â I shrug. Itâs not a big deal for me. Iâve done everything I can to avoid the opposite sex since Shelli. Aria is the first. Sheâs also the first to get under my skin.
âYou donât talk to other women? Right, and Iâm the Virgin Mary.â Aria laughs.
âYouâre not a virgin.â I raise an eyebrow at her, my way of egging her on to tell me if Iâm right or not.
âI could be.â She lifts one shoulder in reply.
âYou told me you didnât like sex, which means youâve tried it at least once. Granted, it obviously wasnât good sex, but youâre definitely not a virgin,â I remind her.
âWhatever.â Aria sits on the bed, digs through her handbag, and pulls out a brush. I shouldnât let my eyes drift. But the way the shirt clings to her breasts, her nipples hard underneath the cotton⦠Her wet hair has dampened the fabric, making it stick to her body.
âIâm gonna have a shower,â I grunt, turning and practically running into the bathroom.
âDonât talk to anyone while youâre in there,â Aria calls after me.
What the fuck have I gotten myself into?
I expected to find Aria in the same spot I left her after I finish in the bathroom. Sheâs not here, though, and the door is wide open. With nothing but a towel around my waist, I storm into the hallway and look for her. Surely she didnât leave. I gave the guys at the gate strict instructions to call me if she even tried.
Iâm not an asshole. Iâm not going to hold her here against her will, but if sheâs leaving the grounds, then Iâm following her. News of her being my wife is out in the world. The streets are talking, and Iâm not about to take any chances with her. Thereâs also the whole Densper deal that we just blew to pieces. I have no idea what all was involved, but her father seemed desperate. And desperate people do reckless shit.
My heart beats faster as I jog down the stairs. I pass Vin in the foyer. âSheâs in the kitchen,â he says, walking straight past me.
My steps slow. Sheâs in the kitchen. She didnât leave.
The moment I turn the corner, I find Aria talking to Eloise and Daisy at the benchtop. Sheâs still only wearing the shirt I gave her. My shirt. I really didnât think about what seeing her in my clothes would do to me. I didnât think about what any of this would do to me.
I can feel everyoneâs eyes on me as I walk over to Aria. âDid you need something?â I ask her, wrapping my arms around her shoulders. I pull her into me. Right against my chest. She tenses up. I lower my mouth to her ear. âGo along with it. People are watching, remember?â
Itâs not real. Itâs fake. I keep repeating this in my head. It eases the overwhelming guilt I feel, especially when my lips press against Ariaâs forehead and she melts into me a little more.
âIâm okay. I just wanted to bring my plate down,â she says. âSanto?â
âMmm?â
âYou donât have any clothes on,â she whispers.
âI thought youâd left,â I tell her, keeping my voice quiet. When I finally pull away and turn around, I find both Eloise and Daisy still staring at me.
âIâm so happy for you. Iâve been waiting for this,â Eloise says.
âMe too. You deserve this happiness, Santo,â Daisy adds.
âThanks,â I grunt. âEl, Iâm going to need a house. Weâre going to need a house,â I quickly correct myself.
âNot you too. Seriously, this house is plenty big enough, Santo. You two do not need to move out.â El frowns at me like I just told her that her cat died.
âWe need our own place.â
âWhy? Give me one good reason why you canât live here?â she says.
âBecause right now I want to pick my wife up, spread her over that counter, and fuck her senseless. I canât do that with the two of you standing here, now can I?â
Aria gasps, and when I look at her, her entire face is flamed red.
âThatâs disgusting. People eat off this counter.â Daisy scrunches up her nose.
âThey do. I remember a time when your husband was eating his favourite meal off this very counter. You remember that, Daisy?â I didnât see it personally, but Vin made sure we all knew that he did.
âShut up,â Daisy hisses at me before turning to Aria with a pleasant smile on her face. âI have to get home. Iâll see you tomorrow. Welcome to the nuthouse. Iâm really glad youâre here.â
âThank you,â Aria says, her voice quiet. I stare at her. Her face is still flushed, her pulse has quickened, and her nipples are hard under her shirt. Sheâs turned on.
Little Miss I-Donât-Like-Sex is turned on. Interesting.
âYou need anything else, sweetheart?â I ask her with a raised brow.
âNo, Iâm good,â she says.
âLetâs go then.â I take hold of her hand.
âGive me some warning before you tell Gio youâre moving out, Santo,â Eloise yells after us.
âWill do,â I tell her.
âIs he really going to be that upset if you move out?â Aria asks once weâre out of earshot.
âYes. Heâs irrational and wants to keep us all together,â I reply.
âThatâs kind of nice. I always envied people who had siblings,â she says.
âWell, now you have so many of them itâll be hard for you to find a moment of peace.â I couldnât imagine growing up alone, without my brothers. Theyâre my best mates. The year Gabe was locked up was fucking agony for all of us. Weâve always been there for each other. Through the good and the bad times, my brothers are the one constant I can count on in life.
âFor one year,â Aria says. âTheyâre going to hate me after that.â
âThey wonât hate you.â Theyâll hate me for lying to them, but they wonât hate Aria.
I donât let go of her hand, not when weâre walking up the stairs, not even when I lead her down the hall. Thereâs no one watching. I donât need to hold her hand. But, fuck, do I want to. I open the door to my room and loosen my grip as we walk in.
âHow exactly are we doing this?â Aria asks.
âDoing what?â I reply as I slam the door shut.
âSleeping. Thereâs only one bed in here.â Aria gestures towards the middle of the room for emphasis.
âItâs a super king-size bed. Thereâs plenty of room to share it.â I donât know why I want her here. I get we have to play the part to make this marriage believable, but I actually want her next to me. I turn around, and Iâm hit with guilt when Shelli stares back at me through her pictures. âIâm sorry,â I mouth to her, and I really fucking am.
Iâve never pretended to be a good guy. I just didnât think Iâd ever betray the one person I was supposed to love until the day I died. I do love her. Iâm just not sure what else Iâm feeling right now.
âWe canât share a bed,â Aria stammers out, drawing my attention back to her.
âWhy not?â I walk over to the bed, pull the covers aside, and sit down, resting my back against the headboard.
âBecause this isnât real. That is why you said no sex.â She looks panicked, and I fucking hate it.
âIâm not going to do anything, Aria. Weâre just sleeping. Thatâs it,â I tell her.
âRight. I didnât mean to suggest that you would. I mean, why would you even want to? â¦I get it⦠I just⦠I donât know. This is all so new to me.â
âItâs new to me too,â I remind her. âBut weâre friends. Think of it as a sleepover.â
âA sleepover. Okay, I can do that,â Aria says as she climbs onto the bed. She then positions herself as far on the opposite side as she can get before rolling over to face me.
I switch off the light on the nightstand and slide down. Not that I can see shit. Weâre now covered in darkness.
âSanto?â
âYeah?â
âThank you. I really appreciate what youâre doing for me. I donât know what I would have done if I didnât meet you,â Aria says.
âIâm glad I can help. What your father was doing was fucked up,â I tell her.
âI know. But heâs the only parent I have,â she whispers.
âI know a thing or two about fucked-up fathers, Aria. They donât change. He will always choose himself over you. Iâm sorry, and I fucking hate that for you. But you canât trust him,â I tell her.
âI donât trust him. I never really have,â she says, then asks, âWhat happened to your parents?â
âMy father killed my mother when we were young. And then he died a year and a half ago.â
âHow?â
âHis forehead ran into a bullet after he killed my fiancée.â My words are so low Iâm not sure if Aria hears them. Iâve never spoken about this to anyone but my brothers. Itâs hard to do it now.
âThatâs⦠I donât know what to say. I mean, Iâm sorry you went through that. Iâm sorry that youâre still going through it,â Aria tells me.
âThank you.â I donât know what to say either.
âYou know, if you ever want to talk, Iâm a great listener. I wonât judge you or anything. Iâll just listen.â
âGoodnight, Aria.â I roll over and face the other way.
I know Iâm not likely to get much sleep tonight. Iâm way too fucking sober, for one. Then thereâs the fact thereâs a woman in my bed. I havenât had a woman in my bed for a long-ass fucking time. And right now, my dick likes Aria way too fucking much.
