Zoey, Sasha, and Jade all look at each other before saying in unison, "Basic."
I chuckle to myself as my friends run to catch up to me. Danny scowled behind me. I was ninety percent sure she was going to college to be a defense attorney. Which was far from basic, but I had to say something cool. The truth was I was freaking out. If I didn't let them bring their boyfriends, my sleepover would be dubbed lame, dull, or, worst basic. It was bad enough I didn't have a boyfriend or girlfriend, for that matter. I needed this sleepover to be off the chain. I looked at my phone, wondering if I should ask Mi'a for permission.
"Hey, Lil. Happy birthday." Cory, my ex, said, startling me as I closed my locker. He held out a gift to me, and I took it.
"What do you want, Cory?" I demanded.
"Don't be so cold, Lil. I was just saying happy birthday. I heard you were having a sleepover. Can I come over?" He tried to say smoothly.
My friends giggled like the high school girls they were. "Mhmm, let me think about it. No!" I demanded before briskly walking away.
"Lillian, Cory is like the hottest guy in school-" Jade gushed.
"Basketball captain-" added Danny.
"And like the only black guy here among three other black guys. Why can't you just forgive him for whatever he did?" Sasha said. Along with everyone else, she had no clue why I broke up with Cory but was more personal. Cory and I were like a black power couple. The only power-black couple at my majority-white private school. Sasha being my only black friend, was our number one fan. I also think she secretly liked Cory herself. I didn't care. I felt that they would make a better couple than we did.
"I just don't like him anymore. You should ask him out." I said as we all entered science class.
"I'm with Michael, and I am not taking your tasty leftovers no matter how tasty they are. You're my girl. I wouldn't do that to you." Sasha said with fire in her eyes. She was such a good friend. My ride or die. I loved her platonically, of course.
"I'm giving you permission, and Micheal is forty miles away. I thought you said you wanted to cut it off with him anyway. Here's your excuse to."
Natasha bit her bottom lip. Her plush lips poking out, reminding me of Mi'a's sexy lips. Not the time Lillian. Oreo. I love Oreos.
"Earth to Lil. Do you read? Come in. Come in." Sasha said, snapping her fingers in my face.
"Wha? What you say?"
"I said, are you sure?"
"Oh yeah, for sure. Go for it."
"Does this mean you'll finally tell us why you broke up with him?" Zoey inquired. She was the nosiest member of our group.
"Yeah?" The rest of the group implored. They were all nosey, though, when it came to wanting to know why Cory and I broke up.
"It was last year, guys. What does it matter?" I said with a bobble of my head.
"Because if he did something really douchebaggy, I want to know Lillian," Sasha said sincerely, placing a comforting hand on top of my own.
"No, nothing like that. If it's really important to you. I'll tell you later. Okay, just Sasha."
"Why?" Danny snapped.
