I always park at the back of the lot. Walking a few hundred feet from my car to the deli on a nice day makes me feel like much less of a slob. Today I wish I would have parked closer.
About 100 feet into my walk to grab lunch, a car quickly approaches me from 9 oclock and comes to an abrupt stop between two parking spots directly in front of me. I give the driver the universal "wtf" gesture as I notice the car is occupied 3 mid-20's women. This type of erratic driving behavior is fairly common among older demographics, so the fact that I was cut off by group of girls half my age was the first indication that something strange was going on.
I side step to my left and continue my path around the new obstruction when the driver, a cute college aged black girl, springs out from the car with a snappy "Hey Mister!". I cautiously slow down and look over my shoulder at her as she continues "Come here, I need to ask you something." Her body language immediately portrays a sense of unease. She seems nervous in her approach, and I notice her quickly glance at the rest of the occupants in her car as if looking for encouragement. "You wear men's cologne, dont you?" - A question I certainly wasnt expecting. At this point she has made a couple steps in my direction as Ive maintained my course away from the vehicle, which was not only parked between spaces but also half way into the lane of traffic. She had obviously parked hastily and without consideration.
I realize this was no sales call. She wasnt trying to push her Avon on unsuspecting men walking around parking lots. This felt more sinister. It felt pushy and spontaneous. I like to think of myself as a decent looking guy, but I had a hard time believing she was so stuck by my attractiveness that she had to stop NOW to awkwardly get my attention.
I assertively responded "No, Im good. Thanks tho" and pick up the pace as I move myself further away from that situation and closer to my waiting sandwich. I turn away, but can hear her say "Ok, take it easy" as she returns back into her car.
Was I about to be taken? Did she think she could somehow convince me to take a whiff of her Chloroform "cologne" and stuff me into her back seat? Why this parking lot, and why mid-day with a hundred possible witnesses? Was she put up to it, a dare from her friends? A thousand possibilities ran though my mind as I indulged in my lunch, thankful that I wasn't eating alone, chained up in someone's cold damp basement.
