I waited with Paige as her parents strode over to join us, not sure how I felt. Part of me wanted to rage at them while another part of me only felt sadness. I knew why theyâd taken her away, but that did nothing to stop my anger from blooming inside me.
âPaige,â Francine said, her voice fluttering, her hands outstretched to her daughter as if sheâd snatch her away once more. This time, theyâd make sure we never saw each other again.
I hadnât seen Francine and Franklin in ten years, but they didnât look much different from when Iâd been invited to dinner often and when Iâd felt welcome enough to stroll inside their house after school and raid the cookie jar sitting on the kitchen counter.
Their faces tightened as they stopped in front of us.
âYou need to leave with us right now,â Francine said, turning her pleading gaze to Paige. âPlease. Heâll hurt you.â
Paige leaned into my side. âDarrow would never do anything like that. Youâre the ones who hurt me. How could you take me from Petrified Woods when you knew how much he meant to me?â
âHeâll turn you to stone,â Franklin hissed, his hand spiking in my direction. âLook at him. Heâs a medusa. A monster.â
âThe only monsters here are you two,â Paige said. Her voice broke. âI canât believe you did that to me. To Darrow. I loved him, and you stole me from him.â
My heart surged to hear her standing up for me, to hear of her love. She was sticking up for us.
âHeâs a hideous beast,â Francine snarled. âLook at his hair.â Her finger snapped out to flick one of the strands, and the rest responded to my anger, flaring out around my head. She gasped. âItâs alive! He has snakes on his head, and his skinâs the color of ashes. Never look into his eyes. Theyâll turn on you and it will be over!â
âCome with us. Please,â Franklin said, his voice leveling. âLeave him here with the other monsters.â
Paige lifted her chin. âI wonât. Iâm an adult. I make my own decisions, and Iâm staying with Darrow.â
Francine turned her sharp eyes my way, impaling me on the spot. âHow many?â she barked.
âExcuse me?â Paige asked, her confused gaze shooting from me to her parents.
Lead solidified in my gut. Like an airplane spiraling toward the ground, there was no stopping me from crashing.
âHow many?â Franklin cried. âOr is it too many to count by now?â
âSeventeen,â I said, my voice dull. I knew very well what they meant.
âAnd now youâre going to make it eighteen,â Francine said, her voice lifting to a shriek. âTwenty if we continue to stand in your way, am I correct?â
âWhat are they talking about?â Paige asked, a whimper coming through in her voice.
I stared at the ground. If I didnât, Iâd release the wrath boiling inside me on them. The ground beneath my feet shifted, flexing as it turned to stone.
âLook,â Francine cried, reeling backward, away from the rock forming beneath her feet. âLook! Heâs doing it before our very eyes.â She rushed forward and yanked on Paigeâs arm, but my love remained standing beside me.
Would she stay with me if she knew what Iâd done?
âIâve learned to control it,â I said stiffly.
âIt doesnât appear that way to me,â Franklin said.
â
make it happen,â I said, pleading for them to understand. âItâs not the other way around.â
Franklin stomped closer, his face so ruddy, I thought heâd explode. âSeventeen doesnât show any control at all. Look at the ground. Your hands are clenched. Youâre a hideous monster about to rampage through everything in sight.â
âPlease,â Paige said to me. âWhat are they talking about?â
âHeâs turned seventeen people to stone with one look in his eyes,â Francine said with a sneer. âHeâs a horrible beast. Youâll be next, Paige. Mark my words.â
âYou turned seventeen people to stone?â Paige asked, her shoulders curling forward. â
?â
I couldnât bear the accusation in her eyes.
While she gaped at me, I pivoted on my heel and stalked along the path winding around the castle.
When I hit the end of the building, I turned toward the back of the castle and bolted.
