Chapter 22: The Neighborly Tickle Trap

The warm glow of a lamp illuminated Maggie's cozy living room. She leaned back on her couch, one leg propped up over the other, her bare feet resting on the cushions as Daisy, her Australian shepherd, nestled against her side. Maggie absentmindedly flipped through a magazine. Her soft blue blouse and relaxed jeans were a clear sign that she was unwinding after a long day.

A knock at the door interrupted her peace. She glanced at Daisy, who perked up but made no move to leave Maggie's side. With a sigh, Maggie pushed herself up and walked across the room, her bare soles padded against the hard wood floor. She opened the door to see Ryan standing there with a grin and a small toolkit in his hand.

"Hey, Maggie. Just bringing this back. Thanks again for letting me borrow it," Ryan said, holding up the case.

"Wow, an on-time return. You're spoiling me," Maggie teased, stepping aside to let him in.

Ryan chuckled as he stepped into the living room, looking around at the cozy space. "What can I say? I'm a model neighbor."

Maggie smirked and gestured toward the couch. "Make yourself comfortable. Daisy already thinks you're her best friend."

Ryan plopped down on the other end of the couch as Maggie returned to her spot, her feet propped up again, and Daisy happily trotted over to greet him.

"So, big plans for the evening?" Ryan asked, scratching Daisy behind the ears.

"Just me, Daisy, and a magazine," Maggie replied, flipping the page. "Very thrilling stuff."

Ryan glanced at her feet, which were relaxed and slightly crossed at the ankles. He grinned mischievously. "You know, for someone so laid-back, you've got surprisingly fancy feet. Do you moisturize them or something?"

Maggie raised an eyebrow, her lips twitching into a smile. "Excuse me? Fancy feet? What does that even mean?"

"I'm just saying," Ryan continued, "they look like the kind of feet that should be in a spa, not on a couch."

Maggie laughed, shaking her head. "You're ridiculous."

But Ryan wasn't done. He leaned forward and gave the sole of her right foot a light poke. Maggie jerked her foot back with a surprised yelp. "Ryan!"

"Oh, I see how it is," Ryan said, grinning even wider. "The great Maggie has ticklish feet."

"Don't you dare," Maggie warned, narrowing her eyes at him, but the smile tugging at her lips betrayed her amusement.

Ryan reached forward, gently grabbing her ankle, and ran his fingers lightly across her sole. Maggie burst into giggles, trying to pull her foot away.

"Ryan! Stop! That's not fair!" she protested, her laughter bubbling uncontrollably.

Daisy, not wanting to miss out on the fun, started sniffing at Maggie's other foot before giving it a playful lick. Maggie's laughter doubled as she squirmed on the couch.

"Daisy! You're supposed to be on my side!" Maggie gasped between giggles.

Ryan leaned back, still holding Maggie's ankle, as he pretended to analyze the situation. "You know, I think Daisy's just trying to tell you that I'm right."

"Right about what?" Maggie managed to say, still giggling as Daisy continued to lick her toes.

"About you being the most ticklish person in the building," Ryan declared, giving her foot one last tickle before releasing her.

Maggie quickly tucked her feet under her, glaring playfully at him as she caught her breath. "You're the worst, you know that?"

Ryan grinned. "And yet, you keep letting me in. What does that say about you?"

"Apparently, I have terrible taste in neighbors," Maggie quipped, shaking her head.

Ryan stood, picking up the now-empty toolkit. "Well, I'll leave you and Daisy to recover. But I'm expecting to be repaid for all my hard work."

"Repaid? You're the one who owes me coffee for borrowing my tools," Maggie shot back.

"Deal," Ryan said with a wink as he headed for the door. "Enjoy your relaxing evening—what's left of it, anyway."

As the door closed behind him, Maggie leaned back against the cushions, shaking her head in exasperation. Daisy nuzzled against her side, her tail wagging happily.

"Traitor," Maggie said to the dog, though her smile gave her away.

The room was quiet again, save for the sound of Daisy's breathing and the faint rustle of the magazine as Maggie picked it back up. For all Ryan's antics, she couldn't help but feel her evening had become a little more entertaining.
