Chapter 15 — Inscribed Traces

Guardian of the Deep Layers: Volume One573 words~3 min read

The glyphs on the stone tablet were unreadable—

to both the Guardian and the girl.

And yet,

when they touched the markings,

something like “meaning”

sank quietly into their chest.

Not words—

but something beyond language,

as if emotion and intention had been etched in place of syntax.

> “This isn’t… dialogue.”

The girl murmured.

> “No.

> This is observation.”

The Guardian held the tablet up to the light.

Its surface felt faintly alive.

The engraved lines resembled not patterns—

but the trace of someone’s gaze.

> “Our records were read.

> And whoever read them… left their own.”

The Guardian nodded deeply at the girl’s words.

> “This stone is their mark.”

The fire crackled softly—

the only sound breaking the silence.

And as thoughts drifted toward the unseen “reader,”

the two began to walk again.

The Unwritten Land had taken on shape.

But not all of it had been their doing.

Unfamiliar plants,

skies of unintended color,

unexpected phrases blooming in the Book of the Unwritten—

All hinted at a new kind of interference.

> “Someone else is… co-writing this world.”

The Guardian whispered.

The girl felt the same.

They had once believed record-keeping was a solitary act.

Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.

But now,

it felt like a resonance.

> “If that’s true…”

The girl stopped.

She opened the Book of the Unwritten.

> “Maybe… we can ask a question back.”

> “A question?”

> “Yeah.

> Not just writing into the world.

> If there’s another will at work,

> maybe if we call out,

> something might answer.”

The Guardian considered it—

and then nodded quietly.

> “Let’s try.”

With a trembling hand,

the girl traced her finger across the page.

And slowly, a single question emerged:

—Who are you?

The words glowed,

sank into the page,

and rose toward the sky.

The air shifted.

Something—somewhere—responded.

Wind stopped.

The earth gave a low, distant rumble.

> “…Something’s coming.”

The Guardian stood alert.

Not with fear—

but in recognition.

A presence was attempting to take form.

The space before them bent,

and something emerged—

A white-robed shadow,

at its center a pulsing light-core.

It spoke no words,

but its existence alone

was a reply.

> “…A reader?”

The girl whispered.

The Book of the Unwritten opened on its own—

new words surfacing without her touch:

—Observer No.0: Dialog Protocol, Tentatively Linked.

> “Can we… talk with it?”

The Guardian asked.

The shadow tilted its head faintly.

—Record-reader. Consciousness cluster generated through records.

By observing and recording, it constructs its own existence.

> “Consciousness cluster…?”

> “So it’s not a single being?”

Then—

the sky shuddered.

A distortion of light and shadow—

a record fracture.

The Book of the Unwritten flared with a pained cry of light.

> “Something’s… breaking…”

> “No—this is…”

The Guardian shut the book and turned toward the shadow.

> “If this continues,

> the record itself will collapse.”

The figure remained still,

then slowly nodded.

—Options presented. Proposing record resynchronization.

The Guardian and the girl understood instantly.

They stood at a choice:

Harmonize the record with this “reader”…

or sever the link,

and continue writing alone.

> “So… it’s up to us.”

> “Yeah.

> The next record will shape the future itself.”

The wind returned—

carrying the weight of a turning point.

Their journey through the records

was about to enter its next divergence.
