I was passing Steveâs office today, and on glancing in, my eyes met avision of great beauty and dread.
Filling the chair, with her enormous frame, on the opposite side of hisdesk, was Nicolette âAbandon all hope ye who enter hereâ Kurtzman â Nikki!!!
I think my heart had skipped a beat.
Although her wild hair was held in check by an Alice band, I hadrecognized her immediately by her large frame and full, pink, pouting lips.
I had directly backtracked in order to prove to myself that I had indeedglimpsed correctly (Yet, I prayed earnestly that I had been mistaken).
This time I stopped in the doorway for a better look.
She was wearing a white, form-fitting polo-neck top that shaped itselfadmirably along the contours of her upper body. Below was a gray, tight-fittingskirt that should have reached past her knees, but had somehow managed to findits way up, onto her strong thighs. She constantly made half-hearted attemptsto correct the presumptuous garment. And each time she did, Steveâs eyes wereunable to avoid the naked, shapely, tanned legs that emerged from beneath hercreeping clothing.
I was reminded of Sharon Stoneâs character in that Basic Instinct movie âany moment now she might spread those magnificent legs to reveal yet another ofher finest assets.
Amazingly, Steve was the first to spot me in the doorway. He beckoned meinside and stood up.
âCome in!â He waved a hand at Nikki. âCornelius, Iâd like you to meetNicolette Kurtzman.â
She never waited for further introductions. She stood up, held out herhand and declared, âItâs a pleasure and an honor to finally meet you in person,Mr. Crane. Iâve been keeping track of all yourâ¦of Globalâs excellent track record. Most impressive!â
I managed a feeble, âOh?â
Steve informed me far too excitedly, âMiss Kurtzman is here for a jobinterview. Sheâs very interested in the position needed for that specialproject.â
I managed to repeat an even weaker, âOh?â
âThatâs right, Miss Kurtzman has aâ¦â
She interrupted. âNikki! Please, call me Nikki! Everyone else does!â
âNikki has a similar position over at Futronics.â
âOh, so you already know each other, then?â
âYes! Well, actually, no. Iâd seen her around a couple of times. Sheworkedâ¦works under Frank Myer in a different section.â
âYeah, Iâm pretty darn sure she works under Frank.â
âWhatâs that mean?â she asked frowning.
I ignored her query and asked, âSo when did you two first meet?â
âToday! Today is the first time weâve actually spoken. And may I say,âWhat a charming, intelligent young lady.â Iâm sorry I never got to know herearlier at Futronics.â
Nikki pretended to be embarrassed at the flattering remark. âWhy, thankyou Mr. Ferran.â
I regained my composure and asked, âAre you unhappy at Futronics? Why thedecision to move?â
âThe usual ones. Better pay. Better working conditions. Betteropportunity for advancement.â
âWell, that last one certainly fits the bill!â
âExactly! I told you I was impressed with Globalâs record.â
âWell, I guess an interview works both ways. We both gotta be sure thatwhat we have to offer each other is worth theâ¦risk.â
âExactly! I wouldnât want to risk making the change if I didnât think itwas totally to my benefit as well.â
âOf course! And what makes you think you could be a benefit to us?â
âIâm one of the best in my field.â
âI admire your honesty andâ¦modesty.â
âDo you know me?â
âWhat?â
âI mean, are you familiar with my work orâ¦me orâ¦â She paused frowning.âItâs just that you keep speaking as though you already know me from somewhereelse?â
âItâs just my way of grilling all the possible applicants.â
Steve unfortunately came to her rescue. âShe really is one of the best inher field. Iâm equally impressed with her track record.â
âSure, Steve, but letâs look at all the options before you make anydecisions.â There was a small pack of folders on his desk. I flipped throughthem. âAre these the other applicants?â
There was irritation in his voice as he suddenly asked in a hushed tone,âCan we talk outside for a minute?â Then louder to Nikki, âPlease, sit down.Iâll be with you shortly.â
He closed his office door from the outside and said, âThis should havebeen shut in the first place!â After checking to see that the passageway wasclear, he asked sternly, âWhat was that?â
âWhat?â I frowned.
âI donât think that was very professional - talking like that in front ofher?â
âOh, really? And you think itâs professional to boost her, and her hopes, before youâve even made any final decision? Youâre still young Steve. You gottatoughen up some. Get used to the idea that this is a donât call us, weâll callyou world, okay? People win â people lose! Get used to it!â
âRight! And the winners get to rub the losersâ noses in it?â
âI never said that!â
âLook, I know what this is all about. I know where youâre coming from!â
âYou do?â I asked slightly concerned.
âYeah, of course!â He made another inspection of the passageway beforedeclaring, âYouâre just being prejudice! She might look like a dumb, blondebimbo to you, but sheâs got a fine academic record as long as my arm.â
âAre you sure you donât mean as long as your dick?â
âWhat the hellâs that supposed to mean?â
âYou know exactly what it means!â
âYou think I want to hire her for her looks?â
âNah, itâs because sheâs charming and intelligent. I think thatlittleâ¦large witch has charmed the wool over your eyes?â
âAre you suggesting that I canât do my job properly?â
âNo, Iâm justâ¦â
âNo, I think you are? And if that is the case, then maybe you should alsostart looking for another Chief Engineer of Technology as well?â
âWould you put your attitude and your dick back where they belong? AllIâm sayingâ¦all I said was, âYou need to look at all the options before makingyour final choice.â Whereâs the harm in that? It was obvious that youâ¦â
âAnd it was obvious that you werenât very decent in there. You donât saystuff like that in front of an applicant. Even if you are the goddamned CEO ofa multibillion dollar company, it doesnât give you the right to hurt anybodyâsfeelings.â
âYouâre right!â
âWhat?â he asked puzzled, having the brisk wind suddenly removed from hisangrily flapping sails.
âI said, âYouâre right! Iâm sorry! It was wrong of me. Youâve helped meto see myâ¦mistake. Pleaseâ¦forgive me?â
âYouâre forgiven, butâ¦â He still continued to glare. This time searchingmy face for a hint of any insincerity that I might be trying to conceal.
âBut?â
âIâm in charge of this project. The final decision is mine.â
âI understand.â
âIf itâll make you happy, Iâll look at the other applicants as well?â
âVery happy.â
âFine! But, if I choose Nikkiâ¦Miss Kurtzman, the subject is closed âunderstand?â
âClearly!â
âGood! Now if youâll excuse me, I have an interview to finish?â
âDonât let me keep you.â
âIâll let you know my decision by the end of the week.â
This time he closed the door after entering his office again.
I managed to get a good distance from his office before releasing myfrustration.
The unfortunate employees, that chanced to be in my vocal range, had madehaste to remove themselves from my charming and intelligent presence.
For all intents and purposes, she is the best person for the job. Atleast the job that Steve naively believes sheâs applying for!
So, I have absolutely no doubt that he will make the finest wrongdecision of his whole career and life.
Sometimes, having foreknowledge is not quite as gratifying as one mayexpect.
Sometimes, itâs like knowing for certain that thereâs a big, scarymonster in the cupboard and then, foolishly, still opening it!
Time travel can be confusinglyâ¦ambiguous!!!
