I was obviously not in a rational state of mind, especially not so soonafter Hannahâs death, when I had spoken to Detective Inspector Tallis, becauseI think I may have opened an old can of worms. Damn! What was I thinking when Istarted asking all those very bright young man questions?
I was on my way home from school today. I was passing Pierreâs when Isuddenly noticed Kowalski, the one legged man, sitting at a window table havinga coffee. Almost at the same time I heard a car hooting incessantly. It wasTallis in an unmarked vehicle parked by the curb. After catching my eye, he beckonedme to come on over.
I waved at him through the passenger window but he indicated for me tocome around to the driverâs side. I reluctantly obeyed, knowing that I wouldnow be facing towards Kowalski, but I knew that it was exactly what Tallis wanted.
I had momentarily shielded my face by pretending to be blocking out thesunlight from disturbing my view. Unfortunately the sun was behind me and thatsort of action would have made it all too obvious that I was on to him. I castmy fate to the wind looking up and down the street with an air of confidence.
âWhatâs up, Detective?â I asked frowning down into the open window.
âOh, I was just having some donuts and coffee from Pierreâs when I sawyou strolling down the street. I thought Iâd ask how youâre doing.â He offeredme a donut. âHave one. Theyâre not as good as Marnieâs, but, wellâ¦you know?â
I took it and asked, âYeah, how is Mrs. Marnowijk.â
âNot good. Not good at all, Iâm afraid.â Then he quickly asked, âHowâsyour mother?â
âNot good. Not good at all, Iâm afraid. She blames herself for whathappened.â
âYeah, I know. I kept telling her it wasnât her fault. The real one toblame is Hannahâs fatherâs killer.â
âI thought he was stung by a bee. Wouldnât that make it an act of God?â
My heart missed a beat as he asked, âWhat about you?â
âWhat about me?â I asked a little too desperately.
âHow you holding up? I know what happened must have been quite a shockingexperience for a young kid like yourself? Even though you got the I.Q. of atwenty- year-old, it must still have been rather traumatic?â
âYou know about my high I.Q.?â
âWord gets around. Itâs the type of thing that makes big news in a smalltown.â
âYeah, not too unlike a two-headed dog. So, Iâm starting to become themain attraction at the local freakshow?â
âItâs not your fault you were born that way. Besides, you should think ofit more as a gift than a curse.â
âSome days I wish I could push a button and just be a normal kid having anormal childhood â even if itâs just for a day or even a few hours. Itâsdifficult pretending all the time.â
âPretending?â
âPretending to enjoy the mundane activities that children enjoy, just sothe adults find my behavior moreâ¦acceptable.â
âI understand.â
âI seriously doubt that anybody could ever truly understand my frustration.â
âSo, where you off to?â
âMy sanctuary.â
âHome?â
âThe public library. Itâs the one place in the world where I feelâ¦secure. Not even my own home gives me that needed sense of well-being.â
âThey say when youâre young you wish to be older, and when youâre olderyou wish to be young again.â
âI promise you that there will be no such irony in my life.â
âThatâs understandable. Especiallysince your life will become moreâ¦normal once you reach adulthood.â
âExactly! Itâs wonderful to have someone around who understands mydilemma.â
âYou ever feel the need to talk. You know where the station is.â
âI appreciate that.â
âWe donât just catch bad guys you know? Serve and Protect. Thatâs ourmotto. Serve and Protect.â
âKeep well, detective.â
âYou too.â
I had walked briskly off in the direction of the library. But afterrounding the corner I had peeked back in the direction of Tallis and theunmarked vehicle.
About thirty seconds later Kowalski came out of the coffee shop andambled over to the passenger window. His action was most welcome and relieving.
He had clearly shrugged his shoulders.
I smiled and took my first bite of the donut.
Tallis was right, it wasnât as good as Marnieâs, yet to me it still hadthe sweet taste ofâ¦victory!!!
