Hannah arrived late for her babysitting appointment.
My folks rushed out as she came in.
She apologized to my mother, âSorry Iâm late Mrs. Crane! There wasaâ¦problem at the shop.â
Mother paused in her haste and frowned. âNothing serious, I hope?â
âItâs fine now, thanks.â
âWe gotta rush. You know where everything is?â
âYeah, donât worry. You folks get going!â
Mother handed her a piece of paper. Hereâs the numbers at the restaurant,Roxy and Pierreâs.â
âHave a nice time!â
âThank you!â
âOh, I nearly forgot â Happy Anniversary!â
âThank you!â
Hannah watched them drive off before locking the front door and slidingthe chain into place.
She turned, instinctively knowing that I was waiting in the passage. Herlips pursed and her eyes became watery.
âI donât want to do it tonight, Connie.â Then she walked past me into theliving room and sat down on the sofa.
I moved in front of her and grimaced. âWhat? You always tell me you canâtwait to come over? I thoughtâ¦â
âPlease, Connie! Not tonight. Letâs just sit on the sofa and hold hands, okay.â
âNo! Why?â
âIâm not feeling too good.â
âThatâs okay. You can just lie down and relax and Iâll rub you real slowand gentle all over the way you like it. We can pretend weâre playing Doctorand Patient. Youâll love it. Come on youâll see?â
âNext time, okay? I promise.â
âI made my voice sound like a hospital PA system. âDoctor Connie! DoctorConnie! We have a medical emergency in ward 8! Patient Hannah Marnowijk is indesperate need of her injection!â I looked her square in the eye and asked,âWanna see Doctor Connieâs injection, little girl?â I pulled down the front ofmy pajama shorts. âWhoops,â I declared looking down. It would seem the gooddoctor is in need of a dose of medicine himself. That injection seems out oforder.â I shouted towards the kitchen, âNurse Ratchet, some Viagra and make itquick!â
Hannah started to giggle. âYou always know how to make me laugh and feelgood, Connie.â
âAh, the patientâs feeling better already. Just the sight of DoctorConnieâs injection is enough to cure any ailment.â She started to laugh loudly, but then suddenly winced with pain. âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothing,â she said too quickly.
âIt would seem the patient has suddenly experienced a relapse.â Iindicated towards my bedroom. âOff to bed with you, girl. Doctor Connie needsto make a thorough examination.â I clapped my hands twice. âOff you go!â
âNext time, Connie. I promise.â
âTut, tut, doctor knows best! Off you go!â
âI reallyâ¦â
âUh-uh! The doctor has spoken.â
âAlright,â she finally, but strangely reluctantly agreed.
She was standing next to my bed when I got to the room.
I put on the light and she immediately said, âNo! Put it off!â
Her expression was one of concern and embarrassment.
âWhatâs the matter? I thought you said you liked me to watch you naked? You said it makes you feelâ¦free?â
âI do, Connie. Honestly.â
âThen stop this nonsense and take off your clothes.â
She sheepishly consented. âOkay.â She slipped off the shoulder straps andallowed her dress to fall around her ankles. Then she stood staring in absolutefear at the shocked expression on my face.
âOh, my dear God, Hannah? Who did this to you?â
Her body was covered in bruises and abrasions. I was instantly remindedof the way my own body had looked after my fatherâs beating. But this wasworse; far, far worse!
âI fell down the stairs. It was an accident.â
âTurn around!â I demanded. She obeyed. Her back was even worse than thefront. âMy God, Hannah! You didnât fall down any stairs! Tell me the truth!â Iwatched as the fear in her eyes grew. âIt was him? Wasnât it?â
It pained me that she was suddenly frightened of me. Frightened of what Iwould do with the knowledge of the truth.
I wanted to hold her and tell her I cared, and that I wished I could dosomething to make it all better. But her fear had formed a barrier between us.
âStop lying to me, Hannah! It was your father? Tell me the truth, now!â
âI was clumsy! I fell down theâ¦â
âNo! The truth?â
âAlright, Iâll tell you everything but you gotta promise me first!â I wassurprised at the anger in her voice. It was something foreign to herpersonality. I found itâ¦appealing.
âWhat?â
âYou first promise me that you wonât tell another living soulâ¦ever!â
âYou have my word!â
âPromise?â
âI promise!â
âAnd you also promise me that you wonât say any more bad things aboutPoppa?â
âThen it was him who did this?â
âPromise?â
I unwillingly hissed, âAlright, I promise! Now tell me what happened? Thetruth? All of it?â
âOkay,â she whined and sat down on the side of my bed. She was wearing awhite bra and panty. âIâve had a terrible past two days, Connie. You canâtbegin to imagine.â
âIâm all ears, Han,â I said sitting down next to her. âGo on?â I put myhand on her leg and her body gave a sudden shudder. âIâm your friend, Hannah. You donât have to be frightened of me. Iâll never do anything to hurt you.â
âI know that, Connie. I know that. Youâre a real gentle guy. You couldnâthurt a fly. Itâs just that my nerves are all so jangled up ever sinceâ¦eversince... I jump at any little thing now. Itâs so stupid of me, really.â
âEver since?â
âIt all happened yesterday.â
âGo on.â
âPoppa sent me on an errand to fetch him the newspaper from Popâs. But Itook the long way round because I wanted to go by the pawn shop. I always do itto make sure the music box is still in the window. Only this time it wasnât. SoI quickly went inside and asked Mr. Fry the owner where it was. I thought maybehe might have put it somewhere else. Anyhow, he tells me some vacuum cleanersalesman from Boston come in and buy it. He also tells me heâs really sorry, because he knew how much I really wanted it, but business is business.â
âYeah?â
âYou know how much I wanted that music box, Connie. So donât laugh when Itell you that I was so upset that I ran all the way home crying. I even forgotto buy Poppaâs paper.â She stopped for a moment gathering her thoughts.
âCarry on, Iâm listening.â
âWell, when I got back to the shop, Mommaâs in the front and she tells mePoppa wants to see me as soon as I get back. So I go to the back and thereâsPoppa sitting by the big table with the music box in front of him.â
âUh-huh?â
âWell, I was so happy I ran and put my arms around him and told him heâsthe best Poppa in all the world. I told him that he just told Mr. Fry to tellme a fib because he wanted to surprise me.â
âAnd?â
âIâm feeling so happy, but then suddenly he pushed me away so hard that Ifell down on the ground. And he starts shouting and yelling at me. For awhile Ididnât know what was going on. Then he says that the music box arrived, addressed to me, by special delivery while I was out. He says he immediatelyphoned Mr. Fry who told him the same thing. Only difference is that Mr. Frysaid that the guy from Boston told him that heâs buying it for a filthy-mouthedkid that he met near the pawnshop, and who made him a proposition he couldnâtrefuse.â
âWhat?â I choked.
She nodded. âHe then says that he suddenly understands what happened. Sohe phoned the Train Stop Motel where the out-of-towners mostly stay whenpassing through. Sure enough, there was a vacuum salesman from Boston stayingthere, but he had to catch the early train.â
âOh, God,â I said realizing where this was going. I felt the blood drainfrom my face.
âThen he told me that it donât take much to figure out exactly whatâsgoing on. When I asked, âWhat?â he gives me a backhand that sends me flyingacross the room again. Then he starts beating me like heâs never done before. Inever seen him so angry. At first I thought he had found out about us, but thenhe starts saying some really strange bad things. He even starts using thef-word. I ainât never heard him use that word before. Not my Poppa.â
âWhat did he say?â
âHe says that he knows I fuâ¦did itwith the guy from Boston, and that we can all be glad he took the morning trainor else he would be guilty of murder. I didnât know what was happening. He kepton beating me and calling me aâ¦â She started to sob bitterly. âHe called meaâ¦he called me aâ¦â
âWhat?â
âA whore!â She grabbed my pillow and buried her face in it. Her shouldersshook as she sobbed violently. âA cheap whore! A cheap whore who had sold hersoul for a miserable stupid old music box.â She lowered the pillow. âHe saidIâm going straight down to hell when I die.â
I was having trouble to restrain myself. âYou? Heâ¦heâsâ¦â I remembered mypromise and, with an incredible amount of self-restraint, said, âCarry on?â
âWhat?â she asked looking at me with tears streaming down her eyes.âThatâs it. He just kept beating me, telling me he wasnât going to stop till Iadmitted the truth.â
âAnd?â
âFinally, I thought it was the only way to get him to stop.â
âSo you admitted to fucking some vacuum cleaner salesman from Boston inthe Train Stop Motel?â
âYes, I thought it would stop the beating, but he just started beating meeven harder. Eventually my head started to spin, and I could feel myselfpassing out. Somewhere far away I heard my motherâs screaming as well. Then Imust have passed out.â
âThat must be the most awful thing Iâve ever heard. How can anyâ¦whatthen?â
âWhen I woke up I was in my bed. You know we live above the bakeryright?â I nodded. âI woke up in my bed and Momma was crying next to me. Shewanted to phone for a doctor but Poppa said she was just overreacting.â
âAnd?â
âI told her to stop crying. Poppaâs right. Iâm fine. Iâll even make usall some tea. But she wouldnât let me get up. So I just lay there running myfingers through her hair like I always love to do. Sheâs got long hair like Iused to have, you know?â She suddenly held her hands out on the air. They shookterribly. âLook! I havenât been able to stop shaking since.â
âThe music box?â I asked, but already knew the answer.
She started sobbing bitterly again. âI found it in the trash. It wassmashed into a hundred pieces. I wanted to keep the little ballerina, but Mommasaid it wasnât a good idea. It might just set Poppa off again.â
The sight of Hannahâs bruised and battered body had been like a coldshower. My sexual appetite was now replaced with a bottled rage that soughtescapeâ¦retributionâ¦justice!!!
I suddenly had an urge to have a really stiff drink.
âFuck it, why not?â I said and walked towards the door.
âWhere you going, Connie?â
âSit tight, Han! Iâll be back soon!â
My father seldom drinks, but he keeps a bottle of whisky in the pantryfor those odd occasions whenever his folks come round for a visit. Both Grampaand Nanna love to have a shot of whisky before a meal. Nanna has hers, to theconstant dismay of my grandfather, with apple juice. He has his straight up onthe rocks.
I got the bottle from the pantry, two glasses from the cabinet in theliving room, and checked the refrigerator. Great, there was apple juice.
The whisky bottle was about two thirds full. I ran my fingernail alongthe label marking the level. Then I poured a couple of tots into each glass, added apple juice to one, water to the other, and filled both with ice. Then Iadded water to the whisky bottle till it reached the mark. I returned thebottle to the pantry, and I returned to Hannah.
She hadnât budged from the spotwhere she had been sitting on the side of the bed.
âHere,â I said handing her the glass with the apple juice. This will takeaway the shakes.
âWhat is it?â
âDoctor Connieâs Shakes-away Snake Oil.â
She took a sip. âThis tastes great!â
âYeah, my grandmother loves it too.â
She took a bigger sip. âHey, does this have alcohol in it? Have you beenraiding your folks drink cupboard?â She pulled my hand closer and sniffed thecontents of my glass. âYaa! Connie! Your mother will kill me when she finds outwhat you been up to.â
âShe ainât gonna find out.â
âMy Poppa donât like me drinking either. He once allowed me to have halfa glass of wine, and he said it made me act all silly â giggling and laughingat nothing.â
âHe ainât gonna find out either.â I went to my bedside table and pulledout a roll of mints. âHere, make sure you suck one of these before you talk toanybody important, okay?â
She took the roll and smiled mischievously. âOkay!â
A half hour later we were both giggling and laughing at nothing.
âWhee!â she shouted bouncing on the bed. âI donât feel so soreanymore. Itâs so great to be here withyou again, Connie.â
âItâs great to have you here, Han.â
âMy Poppa didnât want me to come over.â
âOh?â
âYeah, he said I should be locked in my room for forever for what I did.â
âWhat happened?â
âMomma said that we already promised the Craneâs, and that they had beenlooking forward all week to going out on their anniversary. Poppa still wasnâthappy, but Momma said thereâs no way Iâd do anything bad again after such abeating. He only agreed to let me go if I told people I was feeling sorebecause I fell down the stairs. He says I shouldnât worry about them believingme either because everyone knows what a stupid klutz I am.â She laughed. âItripped last week while I was carrying this big cream cake. Momma tried tocatch me and it ended up all over her chest. I thought she was gonna be mad,but she laughed and said she looks like one of those guys out of those oldKeystone movies.â She started to giggle. âThen she took some of the cake andthrew it right in my face. She laughed at me and said I should go look in themirror. I looked so funny. We laughed and laughed.â She became serious again.âPoppa didnât think it was funny at all. He took five dollars from my savings. He says itâs a sin to waste or play with food.â
âWhat are you going to do with your savings now?â
âI donât know. Momma says I mustnât think of getting another music boxlike that one â ever! Itâll just remind us all ofâ¦â She smiled and held out herempty glass towards me, âCan I get some more snake oil?â
I got us each a small refill. âHereâs some more medicine for thepatient,â I said handing her the glass.
She took it and frowned at me. âWhatâs Viagra?â
For a moment I was surprised that she remembered. âItâs a little bluepill that men take to remove their wivesâ blues.â
âThat sounds silly! How can the husband take a pill, but the wife feelsbetter?â
âBecause it helps the man to be much better at making love.â
âOh,â she said and then, âOh!â We both laughed for the longest time. Thistime her tears were of joy. Then she suddenly held her hands on the air. Theywere steady as a rock. âLook,â she said excitedly. âThe shakes are gone!â
âDidnât I tell you my snake oil would do the job?â
âYouâre so clever, Connie. Youalways know whatâs best!â
For a fleeting moment I relapsed into my former somberness. âYouâreright, Han! And donât you ever forget it. I know exactly what is best foryou...what will be best for you. And Iâm gonna make sure you get it.â
It is both tragic and wonderful that this innocent loving person cancontinue to love and forgive her father even after all he has done to her.
I decided then and there that I would hate him for the both of us. And atthis particular moment it is the easiest thing in the world for me to do!
She had once called me a âPerfect Angel.â Well, that is what Iâll be thenâ her perfect Guardian Angel.
âCan you play poker?â I had asked.
âCards?â
âYeah!â
âNah! I onlyknow rummy.â
âGet dressed,Iâll teach you.â
âDonât youwanna make love?â
âNot tonight!Next time, okay?â
âOkaaay.â
âTonightweâll pretend to be cowboys in a saloon. Iâll fix us each one last drink andweâll play some poker at the kitchen table.â
âThat soundslike great fun! Letâs go!â
The game ofpoker had turned into rummy. And the rummy had later turned into a game ofsnap.
We had greatfun until her energetic enthusiasm caused her to wince once more in pain.
Aftercleaning up, I decided it was time to watch some TV.
We had beenwatching for about a half hour when the phone rang. Hannah jerked and I lookedat the clock. It was way past my expected bedtime.
âYou betterget that,â I said.
She answeredthe phone with, âHannah Marnowijk! Crane residence! Hello?â She waited a momentbefore repeating. âHello? Hello? Hello!â I heard the dial tone as the callerdisconnected. She spoke to me. âProbably just a wrong number?â
âOkay!â Isaid, but I knew it was her father checking up on her. âWeâve been getting alot of those lately. I think thereâs a crossed line somewhere.â
âOâ¦kay!â Shereturned to the sofa.
Sheeventually fell asleep with her head on my lap while I was stroking her shorthair.
I retired tomy room to write this entry. It is now a quarter to midnight.
Things havegone dreadfully awry. Once again, trying to do good, I only ended up makingthings worse; far worse this time!
Maybe anopportunity will arise for me to make amends. But will any further action on mypart right the wrongs, or will they only further aggravate an alreadyinsufferable situation?
Only Timewill tell!!!
I thought I had completed my entry for today, but something has justoccurred that requires an additional entry.
Although it is already 01h35 I feel this entry belongs here with theother one of July 5th.
I know that my folks always go to Pierreâs after the movies. The shop isjust around the corner from the Roxy, and stays open especially to cater forthe late crowd coming from the flicks who want coffee, cake or a nightcap.
My folks donât drink too often, but they enjoy an Irish coffee on specialoccasions. Tonight was one of those special occasions, so Hannah and I werealso reasonably safe about being, literally, sniffed out!
They got back home a little after 01h00.
By then Hannah had, as I already mentioned, fallen asleep on the sofa. Ihad occasionally heard her snoring whilst I was busy writing my previous entryinto this thick, hardcover notebook that I recently purchased, especially forthis purpose. Itâs good not to have a hundred loose sheets of paper floatingaround all over the show. One day Iâll file them away properly, but for nowIâll keep them in the back of this large, fat notebook.
Anyhow, my folks woke Hannah, and my father took about 15 minutes to dropher off at home and return back here.
Now, in my first life, I had never once, by accident, seen or even heardmy parents making love.
I did, though, have a couple of schoolmates who had seen and/or heardtheirs.
One, an Italian pal, even told me that his folks had absolutely no qualmsabout vocalizing their pleasure in a most extended, vociferous and highlyenthusiastic manner - and rather frequently too. He and his three brothers, whoshared a room, had even gotten into the habit of sleeping under their pillowswhen circumstance required.
One cannot be sure, but I may have disturbed my folks accidently on oneof those occasions when I had run to their room during a bad thunderstorm orafter a bad dream. And perhaps I had been too young, too naive or simply tooscared to notice that I had interrupted their nocturnal frolics as they hastilyand embarrassingly covered themselves. But, after what I witnessed tonight, Iseriously doubt that it did ever happen!
Tonight, I guess under the circumstances, what with it being theiranniversary, my folks were feeling somewhat charged up and amorous, especiallyafter having consumed a little alcohol as well.
On the other hand, the whiskey I had consumed had given me a rathervoracious thirst, and I had gone down to the kitchen for a glass of cold water. On the way back, passing my folks closed door, I was suddenly aware of soundsthat could only mean one thing.
I know it was wrong, but my curiosity had gotten the better of me. Icarefully turned their bedroom door knob and pushed the door slightly ajar. Icouldnât see directly, but I had a pretty good view of them in the dressingtable mirror. By the light of a single bedside lamp, I watched my fatherâs palenaked buttocks bouncing up and down between my motherâs knees. She had her headback and her eyes closed. They both made grunts and groans of pleasure witheach thrust.
I found the sight more humorous than erotic. I held a hand over my mouthto prevent myself from laughing out loud.
I was watching for about a two minutes when my fatherâs tone increased acouple of octaves.
âWait,â said my mother suddenly opening her eyes and staring at him. âNotyet.â
âItâs too late to stop now, honey.â After another two octaves, hecollapsed on top of her. Shortly thereafter he rolled over onto his side of thebed. âSorry, honey.â
I decided it was time to close the door and make a hasty departure.
A short while later the hall light came on and his shadow passed beneathmy bedroom door. I heard him washing himself in the bathroom.
Useless bastard, I had thought whilst reaching inside my mattress for mynotebook to update my memoirs.
I wonder if Iâm also the product of premature ejaculation?
Most probably!!!
