My father came home tonight and made a rather pleasant announcement, âOlâBradshaw must be getting hard up. Crazy old foolâs selling that useless pieceof land near the M51. Saw him putting up a sign on the way home. Nobody intheir right mind would buy it. Much too noisy to erect any type of home; trafficwould drive you loony in a week.â
âA gas company would!â I exclaimed. âItâs the ideal spot for a fillingstation. You gotta buy it!â
âYour head must be awful noisy with all those foolish ideas runningaround in there?â
âPlease, Dad! Theyâre not foolish. Samuel Cohen bought the land becausehis wife wanted a house in the country. He only did it to stop her nagging.Only, a few months later he gets given an offer he canât refuse. He neverlooked back.â
âSamuel Cohen?â
âThat little jewelerâs store on Mason Avenue. After that he opened achain of stores. Only three years later heâs earning enough money to buy hiswife the Wellesâ mansion in Cedar Grove.â
âWhat on earth are you raving on about?â
âJust trust me dad. If you buy that piece of land, you can tell Sallingerwhere to shove his job.â
âThatâs Mister Sallinger to you. And that job happens to put food on ourtable.â
âHow much?â
âHow much, what?â
âHow much does Mister Bradshaw want for the place?â
âFour and a half thousand dollars.â
âThat is only a fraction of what the gas company will pay. Besides Iâmsure heâll settle for four if you make him an offer.â
âAnd just where do you suppose I get the money?â
âDonât you have something in your savings?â
âThatâs not any of your concern.â
âDad?â
âItâs barely half that amount.â
âThatâs fine! You can use it as collateral for the other two! Itâs a surefire deal. You can pay the bank back within a year.â
âYouâre not even ten years old. What do you know of loans and collateraland such?â
âMore than youâd imagine.â
âEnough! Enough of this nonsense. I donât want to hear you talk of itagain.â
