My folks havenât had a night on the town since little Claudia was born.So although I was surprised at first when my mother announced to me that theywere going out, alone, for a meal and a movie, they (especially my mother) hasby now rightly earned the right to a little well-earned leisure time.
I guess that she also feels that Claudia has reached an age where it isnow safer and somewhat less demanding on her peace of mind to be leaving her inthe care of a babysitter.
She had announced and warned, âYour Father and I are going out to celebrateour wedding anniversary tonight. Hannah will be looking after you and Claudia.â
The thought of having someone babysit me was highly objectionable.âThatâs not necessary, ma. Iâm big enough already to look after the both of us.You donât need to be paying any unnecessary money for a silly old babysitter.â
âDonât you be silly! Youâre barely nine years old. Thereâs no way Iâmleaving you alone with Claudia.â
âBut Iâm in that special class at school and you know that Hannahâs notall that bright?â
âBite your tongue! I wonât have you saying nasty things about that girl, you hear? She may be just a little slow, but sheâs a lovely sweet person; andsheâs marvelous with children. The Johnsonâs are also very happy with herbabysitting their two as well. Sheâll be a fine mother herself one day.â
âBut, ma?â
âI said, âNo!â Itâs all been arranged already. I donât want to hearanother word.â
âOh, fine!â
âAnother thing!â
âWhat now?â
âDonât use that tone on me, young man.â
âIf Iâm a young man, then how comeâ¦â
âStop trying to be so clever! You listen carefully to me now! Itâs beenquite some time since we last had Hannah babysit for us. She says that sheâslooking very forward to helping out, so I donât want you giving her a hardtime, okay?â
âOkay, ma!â My tone was starting to display my frustration.
âIf I hear any nonsense stories about you terrorizing her with rubbersnakes or spiders or whatever, Iâll get your father to give you a taste of hisbelt.â
âYes, ma.â There was more of the frustration present.
âYouâre a big boy now; a lot older now than the last time she was here,so donât be childish. The school says youâve got the intelligence of a mucholder child, so behave like one, okay?â
âYes, ma!â My tone was now overflowing with my annoyance.
âAnd I told you not to be using that tone of voice on me, youngâ¦child!â
âSorry, ma.â
âIn fact, I want you to help her wherever possible. In case I forget totell her something, you know where I keep all Claudiaâs things. Iâve even shownyou how to change a diaper.â
âNo thank you very much. Maybe if itâs a number one, but Hannah can havethat honor all to herself if itâs a number two.â
âStop being so squeamish about a little mess. Two seconds ago you werevolunteering for the job, now look at you.â She smiled, and then we both laughed.âYeah, youâre not so sorry about having a babysitter over now, are you?â
âDefinitely not!â
âGood!â
âWhatâs showing tonight?â
âItâs an old classic, Ben Hur with Charlton Heston. I would havepreferred something a little lighter or romantic, but beggars canât bechoosers.â
âI guess that makes me a classic too.â
âWhyâs that?â
âIt was first released in the year I was born.â
âDonât be silly. Well it definitely will become a classic then.â
âYeah, me too.â
âA classic little clown, yeah.â
We laughed again before I said, âIâm sorry, I didnât knowâ¦remember thatit was your anniversary. I would have gotten you something.â
Her expression became sad. She looked to the side as if she could seesomeone standing there; someone who had hurt her deeply. âYes, you werenât theonly one.â
âHe forgot too? I mean dad forgot?â
âItâs okay. Heâll make up for it. Iâll make very sure of that! Iâvealready made reservations at the most expensive restaurant in town.â
âThe Hillside Tavern?â
âRight!â
âWow, thatâs great! They make an excellent pepper-steak!â
âHow would you know?â
âIâ¦uh, heard it somewhere.â
âHmm, well Iâll see. Iâll probably order something less spicy. Maybe a Schnitzel.â
âAnd how doyou knowâ¦â
âI also heardit somewhere.â
âWell, I hopeyou enjoy yourselfâ¦selves?â
âI intendto!â
To mymotherâs delight, Hannah arrived a little earlier than expected, and sheproceeded to show her the ropes â especially all the dos and donâts concerningClaudia.
I decided toretire to my room to do some reading. I had taken out a non-fiction book of theRAFâs involvement in the Second World War. I was finding it rather enlighteningand engrossing.
At seven oâclock, Hannah and I said goodbye to my folks at the front door.
The flick wasa long one and the last show was starting at 08h45 sharp. They (Actually, itwas entirely my motherâs arrangements.) planned to do The Hillside Tavernfirst, and have night caps at Pierreâs after.
Hannah waswelcome to sleep on the couch if she got tired; a blanket and pillow wereprovided for her comfort.
Hannah hadimmediately settled herself down in front of the TV with some knitting. Itdidnât seem to suit her at all. It is an activity I always associate withelderly ladies. Still, I was impressed at how remarkably swift her two largeknitting needles moved as she hardly ever glanced down to inspect her progress.
She appearedlike a ravenous Chinaman devouring a bowl of rice, but having more interest insomething other than the victuals he was rapidly popping into his mouth. Therewas something very comical about it. I smiled before returning to my bedroomand my book.
About an hourlater there was a knock on my door. Hannah stuck her head in.
She sang,âHi, Connie! Everything okay in here? What you doing with yourself?â Then therest of her body followed her head into my bedroom.
âJustreading,â I answered abruptly.
âYouâre soquiet up here. I thought you might be getting up to mischief.â
âYeah?â
âYeah, I knowhow little boysâ minds work.â
âI ainâtlittle anymore, and for your information, the school says I got theintellectâ¦the brain of a twenty year-old.â
Her eyesbrightened. âYeah, I heard all about that!â She sat down on the side of my bednear the foot. âI hear youâre in a special class, too.â
I sat up.âToo?â
She blushedand lowered her head. âI was also in a special class at school, but it was justfor the opposite. It was for all theâ¦slow kids.â She smiled and jerked upstraight again. âI always knew you were special! I always said you were abright kid; even when you were just a little baby like Claudia. I said tomyself, âThis little guyâs gonna be a doctor or a scientist one day.â
I swung mylegs over the side of the bed. âYeah?â
âReally! Andnow look at you. Gee whiz, look at that thick book youâre reading. Wow, itâs sogreat! Iâm so happy for youâ¦and your folks! They must be so proud of you? Ijust frustrate mine all the time. I know they love me, butâ¦â She paused thenlaughed again. âJust look at that book youâre reading? At your age I was stillhaving trouble with The Cat in the Hat. Iâm so proud of you myself.â She leanedover and gave me a hug.
It was myturn to blush. âUh, thanks. Iâ¦appreciate it. Thank you very much.â
She leanedback again. âAnd such a little gentlemen. Just look at you. So clever andhandsome too. One of these days youâll have all the girls running after you.âShe smiled mischievously, âIâm going to be so jealous of them. Do you rememberhow I always used to tease you?â
âAbout youand me getting married one day?â
She noddedviciously. âUh-huh! I knew youâd remember!â Her face reddened some more. âYeah, you always used to be so embarrassed. Now look at me. Now Iâm the oneblushing.â
âWhy?â
âOh, I donâtknow? I guess it just seems silly now that youâre so clever, and Iâm stillsoâ¦stupid.â The last word was uttered very softly.
âNot stupid!Just a bit slow is all.â
âYou soundjust like momma!â She gave me another hug. âI love you, little Connie! Youalways used to terrify me in the past with all your naughty pranks and things, but you always knew how to make me laugh and feel better in the end.â Shesuddenly remembered something. âOoh, I need your help with something?â
âWhat?â
âI knowyouâre gonna think itâs sissy stuff, but I need help with my wool. I needsomeone to hold it while Iâ¦â She never finished her sentence as Claudiaâs wailinghad suddenly interrupted her. âOh, dear! Your little sisterâs calling for herbottle. Iâll speak to you later!â She rushed off.
I followedher to Claudiaâs room and watched as she gently lifted my sister out of thecrib.
Claudiaâsface showed concern at the strangerâs touch and voice. Her crying would becomemore frantic if I didnât help out.
I spokequickly to her, and she immediately relaxed at the sight of a familiar face.Hannah bounced her up and down while I calmly spoke to her.
After aboutten minutes, Claudia had fully accepted the surrogate mother, even calling herby that moniker.
âMamma!â shesaid putting her hand on Hannahâs nose.
Hannahcorrected her. âNo, Iâm Hannah. Say, âHannah? Hanâ¦nah?ââ
âMamma!â
We laughedand so did Claudia, thinking that she had done something clever.
Hannah spokeagain to Claudia. âHannah is not a Mamma yet! But Hannah wants very much to beone. Hannah wants to have her own babies one day.â Claudia chortled. Hannahlooked at me but continued to speak to Claudia. âHannah hopes her babies willalso be clever, just like Claudia and Connie.â The statement was meant to beflattering, but there was an underlying poignancy that only I experienced. âOh,dear!â muttered Hannah feeling the bottom of the diaper. âI think it wasnâtyour bottle that woke you up.â She lay Claudia down and peaked inside thediaper. âWhoopsie, itâs a poopsie!â Claudia chortled proudly at herachievement.
I blurted,âWouldnât it be great if somebody invented disposable diapers?â
âWhat?â
âA cheap diaperthat you could just fold the mess into and dump in the trash can? No need tokeep washing and sterilizing the same ones over and over.â
âIt might beeasier just to make a robot nanny who can do all the cleaning for you, Mr.Flash Gordon. Have you also been reading a lot of that science fiction stufftoo?â
I laughed.âYou think disposable diapers is science fiction?â
âYep! Rayguns, robots, little green men from mars, spaceships, time machines anddisposable diapers are all science fiction.â
I laughed again.âWell, thatâs certainly a subject matter that Verne and Welles never imaginedto write about.â I scrunched my face up at Claudiaâs little disaster. âThatâsstrange, you know? She hardly ever messes herself in the day when sheâs awake.â
âChildren arelike that at her age. Itâs just at night that they go in there diapers.â
âYeah? Howwould you know that?â
âIâve had alot of experience with children.â She ruffled my hair. âYou included.â Iblushed and shook my head away from her hand. She laughed. âAh, you do stillget embarrassed?â
âIâm gonnaread my book! And it ainât science fiction either, okay?â
âThatâs okay!Me and Claudia are friends now.â Then she spoke to Claudia again whilst givingher a stomach a rub, âIsnât that so?â Claudia squealed in delight. âYes,Claudia and Hannah are good friends now. Hannahâs gonna clean up your littlewhoopsie while Connie reads his big, thick book again. Your mamma told Hannahthat Connie donât like it when Claudia makes a number two. But Hannah donâtmind at all.â
I knew thatthere was not a shred of sarcasm, a hint of vindictiveness, or even an iota ofmildly playful teasing in her words or tone â Hannah was not the type; she hadnever done or wished bad on any one in her whole life!
Still, I feltuncomfortable by her words and her innocent sharp, stabbing honesty.
Intelligencemakes one proud and vain. And pride goes before a fall.
Wounded, Iretreated to the sanctuary of my bedroom.
About half anhour later Hannah tip-toed into my room. She placed a finger on her lips andsaid, âSheâs sleeping again. Are you gonna come help me?â
âWith what?â
âMyknitting.â She indicated for me to follow.
I reluctantlyclosed my book and obeyed.
My facereddened again as she wound wool around my parted hands.
I asked, âWhyare you doing this
âItâs mucheasier to knit when the wool is looser.â
âWhat are youknitting?â
âA scarf forPoppa. The front of the bakery, by the counter, gets very cold because of therefrigerators. He once had a stiff neck for two weeks. Ooh, I felt so sorry forhim. I just wanted to hug him and tell him how I felt, but he said it wouldonly make it worse.â She giggled before adding, âSo I just hugged him by hisbig stomach.â Her eyes widened. âIf your mamma buys the wool, Iâll make one foryou as well.â
âIâll tellher!â
âGreat! Whatcolor would you like?â
âBlood-red!And one day when I ride down the street in my new sports car, the scarfâll blowred and flashy in the wind behind me.â
âWonderful! Ihope youâll give me a ride?â
âYouâll be myvery first passenger ever!â
âReally?â
âPromise!â
She hugged meagain. âOh, I love you! Iâm just gonna love riding down the street with you inyour fancy car. Iâm gonna wave to all the other girls and make them so jealous. For once in my life Iâll be able to feel beautiful and important â just likeJackie Kennedy or Princess Grace. Oh, I canât wait! I know itâll really happenfor you. Because I just know all your dreams are gonna come true for you!â
âYouârebeautiful and important to me already, Hannah! In fact, I think youâre the mostbeautiful person in this whole town.â
She loweredher head. âI know youâre just saying that?â
âAm not! Mostpeople donât really know you at all. But I see you just like your momma seesyou too. Has she ever told you that youâre beautiful?â
Her headbowed even lower. âYeah!â
âAnd, did youbelieve her?â
She smiledsheepishly at me through the hair that had fallen partly over her eyes. âYeah.â
âSee! So whybelieve her, but not me?â
âItâsdifferent.â
âHow?â
âAll motherâsthink their daughters are pretty.â
âAnd alldaughters are. Itâs just that some daughters grow up to be ugly â especiallythe very pretty ones!â
âThat donâtmake sense?â
âThatâsbecause youâre too beautiful to understand.â
âThat makeseven less sense!â
âBut youdonât need to ever worry. Youâll never be ugly.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause yougot too much love inside you for everybody. Even for all the people who haveever treated you wrong. And if those ugly people canât see your beauty, then itis their loss, not yours.â
âI donâtunderstand everything youâre tryinâ to tell me, Connie, but I know you make mefeel good. Youâre a wonderful friend to me.â She hugged me again. This time Iwanted to hug back, but the wool around my hands prevented it.
We chatteduntil ten past ten when she suddenly blurted, âOh, my! Look at the timealready! Your mum said to have you in bed at nine thirty already! Come on, offyou go!â
âYou gotta bekidding me?â
âNo! You kidsof today are lucky. I had to be in bed by eight oâ clock already! Hurry up, anddonât forget to brush your teeth first!â
The eveninghad been a pleasant one so far, and I had no intention of spoiling it. Iobeyedâ¦to a point.
I wasnâtfeeling tired at all, so I crawled under the covers with my book and a torch.
Around tenthirty, just after starting a new chapter, I heard the chiming sound of thedoor bell, followed by the sound of the TV being turned down.
I slipped outfrom under the covers and moved swiftly to the stairs. I heard Hannahâs voiceby the front door asking, âMrs. Crane?â There was consternation in her tone.
The answerwas a male voice. âNah, Hannah, itâs me â Frankie!â
âFrankieHollywood?â
âYeah!
His real namewas Francesco Rossi, but everyone called him Frankie Hollywood because he wasalways telling everyone that one day he was going to be a big filmstar. Thename was born out of derision, but he had grown to accept it with much pride. He loved to comb his hair like James Dean, and although I am loath to admit it,he was rather handsome and dashing in appearance. His personality on the otherhand, was more slippery than a greased viper.
Theconsternation in her tone had increased substantially. âWhat do you want?â
âLet me in.â
She opened the door on the chain. âWhat do you want?â
âIâve come to visit.â
âThe Craneâs are out for the evening.â
âI know. Iâve come to visit you.â
âMe?â
âSure, why not. Gloria told me you were babysitting at the Cranestonight. I figured youâd like the company. Are the brats asleep yet?â
âTheyâre not brats!â
âAre the little kiddie-widdies asleep yet?â
âOf course! Itâs very late already!â
âThen, open up already.â
âThatâs not a good idea, Frankie. You know my folks donât like you beingnear me.â
âHow old you now Hannah?â
âIâll be nineteen next month.â
âNineteen? And youâre still letting your parents make all yourdecisions?â
âYou know Iâm not all that bright.â
âHell, youâre a working girlalready.â
âYouâve been drinking! I can smell it from here!â
âOne beer! Not even a whole one. Me and my goons shared one goddamnedbeer between the three of us!â
âI donât like it when you talk like that!â
âIâm sorry! I thought Iâd be friendly and give you some company, but youtreat me like the plague.â
âWhereâs Pete and Jake?â
âI dropped them off at home already.â
âWhereâs your car now?â
âI parked around the corner.â
âWhy?â
âLook, are you gonna let me in or not?â
âWhat do you want with me, Frankie? I know you got a girlfriend over atValley High.â
âSheâs just a friend. Nothing serious.â
âYou sure she wonât mind you visiting me?â
âOf course not. She and Gloria are friends. Do you think Gloria wouldhave told me where you are ifâ¦â
âWhat do you really want?â
âI told you I just want to visit awhile.â
âWhatâs awhile?â
âTen minutes or so. I thought youâd like a little company. It must beboring sitting up all by yourself?â
âI dunno? Neither my folks or the Cranes will be happy ifâ¦â
âNobodyâs gonna tell nobody nuthinâ!â
âPromise?â
âPromise!â
âJust ten minutes?â
âI promise!â
There was a short silence. I heard the chain on the door clinking.âAlright then! But keep it down. I donât want to wake the children.â
There was another short silence. âI hope weâre not gonna stand here inthe hallway the whole time. Letâs sit down.â
âOkay, but keep your hands to yourself.â
âLook, theyâre in my pockets.â
They moved into the livingroom where I could see them clearly from behindthe railing at the top of the stairs. The only lights came from a lampstandnext to the sofa, and the silent flickering TV screen.
They sat down and Frankie asked, âSo, howâs things at the bakery thesedays?â
âOh, fine I guess.â There was less tension in her voice. âMomma wants totry a few new recipes, but Poppa says sheâs just being foolish. He says thecustomers are happy enough with what weâre selling. Momma says sheâs tired ofbaking the same old stuff, day in and day out â year in andâ¦â
âYou know Iâd love to come see you at the bakery, but your pa donât likeit at all. I donât know why? I never done him anyâ¦â
âI know! He told me also to make sure that I stay in the back wheneveryou do come in. Not only you but alsoâ¦â
âI miss seeing you around, Hannah! Youâre so pretty andâ¦â
âNow youâre just teasing me.â
âNo, really! I mean it. I think youâre very pretty. Youâve got a greatpair of tits.â
âFrankie! Donât talk like that! It ainât proper.â
âWell, dammit, itâs the Godâs honest truth!â
âThat still donât make it right to be talking like that.â
"Why not? Is it wrong to tell a girl sheâs pretty?â
âJust because I got largeâ¦breasts, donât mean Iâm pretty, or give you theright toâ¦â
âWould you rather be sorry about the things youâve done or about thethings you havenât done?â
Now I knew where Hannah had received her questionable philosophy! It hadcome from the smooth banter of this questionable slimy greaseball.
She said, âI donât understand what you mean?â
âIf we made love tonight would you be sorry about it tomorrow?â
âFrankie! I think itâs time for you to go!â
âIâm just trying to explain what I mean. You were the one who asked! Itâsjust a harmless question to help you understand. I donât mean anything by it!â
âYeah?â
âYeah! Alright, maybe I should have asked it the other way round first.Letâs do that then. If we didnât make love tonight would you be sorry tomorrowthat you didnât?â
âSay that again?â
âIf you and I donât make love tonight would you be sorry tomorrow thatyou didnât?â
âWhy should I feel sorry?â
âBecause the opportunity might never happen again, and then you couldspend the rest of your life wondering how it might have been. Understand?â
âI think so.â
âOkay, now letâs try the other question again. If you and I were to make lovetonight would you be sorry about it tomorrow?â
âIf Poppa found out, for sure. In fact, heâll kill me if he just knew youwere here right now. He told me if he ever found out that I went off alone withanother guy, heâd beat me within an inch.â
âOkay, but what if your pa was never to find out?â
âOh, he always finds out when I done something I shouldnât.â
âYeah?â
âOh, yeah.â
âSo youâre saying heâs gonna know about me being here now?â
âNo!â
âBut you just saidâ¦â
âWe ainât doing nothing wrong.â
âBut you also just said thatâ¦â
âThen maybe you better leave already.â
âItâs too late already. The wrongâs already been done. So does that meanheâs gonna find out about it?â
âNo!â
âExactly! So stop your worrying then.â
âOkay.â
âAre you going to answer the question now?â
âHow does it go again?â
âListen carefully. If you and I were to make love tonight, and if your pawere never to find out, would you be sorry about it tomorrow?â
âNo.â
âReally?â
âUh-huh, but only if I knew for very sure that Poppa would never findout.â
âI heard about what happened with you and Johnny Lime at the SundaySchool picnic out at Lake Lincoln.â
âYou know about that?â she asked loudly surprised.
âWhoa, keep your voice down. Youâll wake the bratâ¦kids up.â
âThat happened a long, long time ago!â
He crossed his fingers. âHey, me and Johnny are like this. He told me allabout how the two of you made out in the bushes while everyone else wasswimming. But donât worry, your secretâs safe with me.â
âItâs not a secret. My folks know all about it too.â
âThey do?â
âMrs. Arbogast saw us coming outof the bushes together. She told momma.â
âComing out of the bushes together donât mean anything?â
âMomma tolâ Poppa, anâ he beat me till I told him the truth. He says if Iever fall pregnant heâs putting me out on the street. Heâs not gonna have anyunwed mother living under his roof. I ainât been with anyone since. Iâm tooscared now.â
âI bet you touch yourself, though?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI bet you sometimes use your finger to make yourself happy?â
âDo not.â
âDonât lie?â
âDo not!â
âCome on, you can tell me the truth. Thereâs nothing wrong with it, youknow?â
âNo!â
âNo you donât do it or no youâre not gonna tell me the truth?â
âIâm not telling you anything, Frankie Hollywood.â
âI do it you know?â
âDo what?â
âPlay with mine.â
âReally?â
âYeah, all the time. In the shower or when I lie in bed at night. Thereâsnothing wrong with it, you know? All the guys do it.â
âReally?â
âReally!â
âI do too,â she said with a hint of embarrassment in her tone.
âSee, I knew it. No need to be ashamed. I told you, thereâs absolutelynothing wrong with giving yourself a little pleasure now and then.â
âReally?â
âOf course not! Whereâs the harm? Can it make you pregnant?â
âOf course not.â She laughed. âDonât be silly. Itâs my own finger.â
âWhat about someone elseâs finger?â
âNo, of course not.â
âSo then, whatâs wrong with touching each other?â
âWhat?â
âWhat would be wrong if I touch you and you touch me?â
âI dunno about that?â
âWhy?â
âHow do I know you wonât try to do, you know, somethingâ¦more?â
âBecause I wouldnât want to make an unwed mother out of you.â
âPromise?â
âPromise.â After a short silence he said, âSo?â
âSo what?â
âSo, letâs do it then?â
âHmmâ¦uhâ¦â
âRemember what I said about being sorry? If you donât do it, you mightend up being sorry about it for the rest of your life?â
âOâ¦kay.â Then she added with far too much enthusiasm. âAlright!â
âGreat! You do me first, then Iâll do you.â
âI thought we were gonna do it atthe same time?â
âNah, itâs better this way - safer.â
âI guess youâre right.â
âOf course. Frankie Hollywood is always right.â
âOkay. Just wait a minute.â
âWhat now?â
âI want to check the children first.â
âAlright, but move your arâ¦hurry up.â
I dashed back to my bedroom and gently closed the door.
Then I jumped into bed and narrowed my eyes pretending to sleep.
It felt like an eternity before my door opened. Hannahâs silhouette stoodwatching me for about half a minute. She had obviously checked on Claudiafirst.
As soon as the door closed, I immediately jumped out of bed again andquietly opened it. I crept back to my spot in the darkness behind the rail.
As I peered through, Hannah sat down next to Frankie again.
He asked, âEverything okay?â
âFine, theyâre both fast asleep.â
âGood, letâs do this then.â I heard the sound of his zipper. âJust a sec.Uhâ¦.okay, there we go. There it is. What do you think? Is that beautiful orwhat?â
Hannah was always painfully honest. âJohnny Limeâs is much bigger.â Shegiggled.
There was a hint of embarrassment in his tone. âYeah, well it ainât whatyou got; itâs how you use it.â
âOh?â
âRight! Besides, you havenât made him angry enough yet.â
âAngry enough?â
âForget it! Just be nice to it then, okay?â
âOkay.â I saw her arm shift across. After an extended period of time shesaid, âI can feel that you like what Iâm doing. And itâs making me feel goodtoo.â She used her free hand to fan her face. âShoo, I havenât felt like thisin ages.â I knew only too well the effect that a hard Mister Winky had onHannah. If Frankie knew it as well, she would be putty in his hands â just theopposite of what he was in hers! She asked, âAm I doing this right? Do you likethe way Iâm doing it? Does it make you happy?â
He replied with his own question. âDo you like making me happy?â
âI do! Very much! I just told you thatâ¦â
âWould you like to make olâ Frankie very happy?â
âHow?â He leaned over and whispered in her ear. âWhat?â
âWhy do you sound so shocked? Johnny Lime told me you did it for him?â
She slapped his arm. âJohnny Lime promised me he would never tell anyone!â
âItâs not my fault he broke his promise.â
âHeâs a liar, liar â his pants are gonna catch fire!â
âCome on, please. Itâs safe too. You canât fall pregnant.â
âI dunno?â
âWhy not?â
âOkay, but you also got to promise then.â
âYou sure do love making people makepromises donât you?â
âIf you donât promise I wonâtâ¦â
âAlright! I promise! I wonât tell another living soul â ever!â
âNot just that!â
âWhat else?â
âYou also gotta promise me that you wonâtâ¦â She paused.
âYeah? Wonât what?â This time she leaned across and whispered in his ear.âOf course! I would never do that!â
âPromise?â
âI promise! Are you happy now?â
âYeah.â
âThen how about making me happy as well.â
âOkay, but just tell me when youâre getting close, okay.â
âYou mean when Iâm angry enough to spit?â
âWhat?â
âForget it. Iâll let you know, okay?â
âOkay.â
Her head disappeared into his lap, and he grunted his approval. Then hedid a very strange thing. He started pointing frantically at the back of herhead with both hands.
It took me a while to realize what was happening. There was a movement bythe window and I just made out the shape of two heads peeking in.
Frankie was indicating his latest conquest to his two misfit pals, Peteand Jake. They pressed their noses flat against the pane in order to see better. Now I was also able to see them more clearly. They grinned like two kidspeering into a candy store. Then they indicated their approval by showing theold thumbs up.
Frankie returned the signal with both hands.
Ignorant that she was the main attraction in Frankieâs sick little show,Hannahâs head continued to move rhythmically in his lap.
I felt the heat of anger rising in my chest as the two idiots outsideclamped their hands over their mouths to stifle their mirth.
Moments later a different heat rose from Frankie. In an instant Hannahpulled away and bolted down the passage towards the bathroom. I heard hergagging and spitting.
Frankie quickly tidied himself up, and after indicating to Pete and Jaketo meet him at the front entrance, moved with all haste towards the door.
I heard the door open and close. Followed by loud, vulgar laughter.
Then I heard Hannah coming back towards the livingroom. âYou lied to me,Frankie Hollywood! You promised me you wouldnâtâ¦â She paused at the sight ofthe empty sofa. âFrankie? Frankie!â She gazed around, and for a moment Ithought she had seen me. But then she heard the laughter outside and rushed tothe door.
I heard it open again, and then I too rushed downstairs into the passage. She stood in the doorway and shouted, âFrankie? Whatâs going on? Why are Peteand Jake here? I thought you took them home?â
The three outside began to chant, âHannah Marnowijk likes to suck dick!âOver and over and over!
She slammed the door and began to sob. âYouâre also just a big fat liar,Frankie Hollywood! Just go away and leave me be! I should have listened toPoppa!â She continued to cry until the chanting had faded away into thedistance. âI hate you, Frankie Hollywood. Youâre going straight to hell whenyou die!â Then almost immediately. âOh, sorry!â She stood there moving her armsand hands rapidly, as if shaking water off them, and repeating, âSorry! Sorry!Sorry! Sorry! I didnât mean that. I was just upset. Iâm so sorry! It was my ownfault again. I shouldnât have let you in. Iâm sorry.â Then she just continuedto cry softly, her shoulders making irregular shudders.
Even though what had happened between Frankie and Hannah had ended in anawful transgression of both her trust and character, it had still managed toarouse in me a strange hunger. A hunger that would not be denied!
And although I felt extreme pity for this poor wretched creature;although I wanted to hold her and comfort her and tell her that everything wasgoing to be fine - at the same time her naivety instilled in me a dark passionthat pulsed inside my pajama trousers. I canât ever remember wanting a woman sobadly â and I hadnât even reached puberty yet!
I knew that the fire that Frankie had lit still burned fiercely withinher loins.
I would use it to my own advantage!
Hannahâs body gave a jerk as she turned and saw me standing in thehallway. Then she smiled awkwardly and said, âConnie? You gave me quite astart. Whatâs wrong?â
âNothing! Everythingâs fine. In fact, itâs just great.â
She frowned. âWhy are you talking so funny? Did you have a bad dream?â
âNope, but I been dreaming up a pretty damn good one.â
âDonât cuss like that, or Iâll tell your mother!â
âYeah?â
âYes!â
âI wonder whoâs story sheâs gonna find more interesting â yours or mine?â
âWhat story?â
âThe one about you letting Frankie Hollywood into our house.â
âI just spoke to him through the door! Thereâs nothing wrong withâ¦â
âYouâre lying!â
âThatâs also an ugly word. You should rather say fibbing!â
âWhatever! Fibbing or lying, youâll go to hell for both!â
âI wasnât fibbing!â
âYeah?â
âYes! Now get back to bed! Itâs way past your bedtime already!â
âWhen you checked to see if I was sleeping earlier, I was justpretending. Right after that, I snuck back down and saw everything. I meaneverything!â
âYouâre fibbing?â
âAm I?â
âWhat did you hear?â
âI said, âEverythingâ!â
âSuch as?â
ââBetter to be sorry for what youâve done than to be sorry for what youcould have done.ââ
âShe slapped her hand over her mouth. After staring at me for the longesttime she asked with a tremor in her voice. âWhat all did you see?â
âEverything too!â
âLike what?â
âLike what you were doing to his Mister Winky!â
âOh my!â she exclaimed, her hand covering her mouth again.â She startedpleading, âPlease! You canât tell anybody what you saw.â
âCanât? Why not?â
âMy father will kill me!â She placed a hand on her chest. âI need to sitdown.â
She walked past me down the passage and returned to her spot on the sofa. She stared at the flickering images on the TV. There was a monotone image of acouple passionately embraced on a beach, but I knew her thoughts were on moreauthentic matters.
I switched on the main light in the livingroom and moved between her andthe TV.
She looked into my face and pleaded again. âPlease, I beg you. Iâm sosorry you saw what you did.â
âAre you sorry you did it, or sorry because I saw you doing it?â
âBoth.â
âYouâre fibbing again. What was that you were doing to Frankie?â
She blushed, and after some deep thought said, âUh, we were just playinglollipop!â
âIt seemed like a lot of fun?â I smiled and laughed to help relieve thetension.
Her eyes brightened and she laughed. âYeah, it was!â
âI know he enjoyed â what about you?â
âOh yeah! She said widening her eyes some more. âIt wasâ¦it made meâ¦it wasfun!â
âDonât be shy to say it? âIt turned you on!ââ
âHoo, where did you hear that? I donât think you should be talking likethat?â
âDonât be silly. I already told you that Iâm like twenty years oldalready. Besides, it isnât called lollipop.â
Her mouth gaped wide as I explained all the terms that I knew for it.âHowâ¦â
âI read a lot of books. And I bet playing lollipop made you feel asthough someone had lit a fire inside you?â
âYes! My gosh but youâre bright. You seem to know me better than I evenknowâ¦â
âMore than you can imagine. I know that you felt that same feeling thattime you were bathing me. I know that it wasnât a cramp or a crab that made youscream.â
She turned a flush of the reddest hue that I have ever seen her, or anyother person, produce from embarrassment. If she was not inclined to refrainfrom blasphemy or profanity she would have filled the air with an abundance ofboth. Instead, she finally managed to choke out, âOh my goodness! All this timeI thoughtâ¦was hopingâ¦â
âThat I never realized what you were doing to yourself while you werewashing Mister Winky?â
âYes! Howâ¦â
âHow many times do I have to tell you that Iâmâ¦ahead of my time. You maythink Iâm a silly little kid standing here in front of you, but Iâm actually agrown man.â
âYouâve definitely made that very clear!â
âIf you understand that, then you must also understand how frustrated Imust be.â
âOf course! It must be terrible for you. What with everybody stilltreating you like a kid all the time.â
âExactly! But the worst part is that I also have the desires of a grownman.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean I want to hold and kiss a woman. I want to be able to make loveto her. I donât want to wait years for it to happen. Do you understand that aswell?â
âOf course.â
âReally?â
âYes.â
âThen will you help me. Will you also play lollipop with me?â
âWhat?â
âYou heard me?â
âNo!â She turned her gaze awayfrom me. âI couldnât! It would be wrong!â
âMore wrong than what you did for Frankie?â
âYes, of course!â
âWhy?â
âBecause youâre aâ¦aâ¦aâ¦â
âGo on, say it, âA kid!â After all Iâve told you, you still treat me justlike all the rest. Iâm still just a stupid little kid in your eyes!â
âNo!â
âYes! Even after I was kind enough to tell you that youâre not stupid youstill hurt my feelings by calling me a stupid little kid.â
âI never saidâ¦â
âMaybe not? But I could see it in your eyes! Thatâs exactly what you werethinking?â
âThatâs a big fib!â
âIs not! Go on! Admit it?â
She struggled for some time to find the words, then blurted, âAlrightthen!â
âSee, I knew youâre like all the rest! Justâ¦â
âNo! I mean alright, Iâll do it!â For the briefest of moments I wasstunned into silence. We stared intently at each other before I finally chokedout, âReally?â
âYeah, but only ifâ¦â She paused and glared some more.
âIf?â
âYou first gotta promise that you wonât tell another living soul â ever! Not about us, and not about me and Frankie either.â
âFrankie ainât a nice guy at all, but he was right about you and all yourpromises.â
She smiled sheepishly. âYeah, but I know that youâll never ever break yours.â
âIâll do even better than promise â Iâll pinky swear! Lightning willstrike me dead on the spot if I ever tell another person about what weâre aboutto do; what you and Frankie did; and about the time you said you got a cramp inyour foot - not ever!â
She bounced up and down on the sofa. âOh, thatâs great. I love you!â Thistime I was able to hug back. I found myself crushed against that magnificentchest. The feel and smell of her was an unnecessary aphrodisiac. She waspensive again for a short moment before adding, âGuess what?â
âWhat?â
âIâm actually looking forward to helping you! It must be terrible havingthe feelings of a grown man inside a childâs body.â It was a statement not aquery.
âDoes your momma know that sometimes you can be very quick too?â Shelaughed and I said, âAnd, if you like Iâll help you too if you start to havefeelings. I can help you put out that fire inside you - again.â
âHow?â
âI know just what to do! Trust me.â
She giggled. âOkay, this is so exciting. I canât wait!
I gazed down the hallway. âDid you put the chain back on?â
âOf course!â
âIâm gonna double check to make sure. You go up to my bedroom in themeantime and make yourself comfortable. I donât want to take a chance thatsomeone might see us through the window.â
âOkay!â She ran off giggling even louder. âHurry up!â
âIâll be as fast as I can! You can trust me on that!â
I had rushed towards the front door to check that it was properlysecured, but I had taken my time on the way back towards my bedroom. I wantedto give her the opportunity to make herself more comfortable.
On flicking the bedroom switch, I was disappointed to find that she hadmerely removed her sneakers before lying down flat with her head on the pillow.
âThat was not what I meant when I said, âMake yourself morecomfortable.ââ
âWhat then?â
âI was hoping you would have taken your clothes off as well.â
âWhat? I donât thinkâ¦â
âCome on,â I said stripping completely naked. âItâll be easier and muchmore fun this way.â
Her eyes had fixed on my groin area. âYouâve certainly gotten a lotbigger since the last time I bathed you.â
I gazed down at Mister Winky who had gotten himself very excited at theprospect of near-future events. âSee, nothing to be ashamed of? Your turn now?â
âOkay, but put the light off?â
âShit, donât tell me youâre one of those always-do-it-in-the dark types?â
âWatch your mouth, Connie Crane! Just âcause youâre like twenty years olddonât mean you got the right to cuss like one!â
âSorry!â
âPut the bedroom light off. Thereâll still be enough light from thelivingroom. Itâll be more romantic too!â
I flicked the switch and she started to disrobe in the subdued glow. Shehad been correct. It was far more romantic⦠and sensualâ¦and stimulating.
She stood naked, the livingroom light producing magnificent crescentsalong all the rounded parts of her body.
I expressed my approval in a subdued tone. âWow.â
She laughed nervously. âDo you think Iâm pretty?â
âWhy do you always dress yourself in suchâ¦frumpy clothes? Look at you?Youâreâ¦if there was a better word than beautiful, then that would be the onethat describes you.â
âPoppa says he wonât have me walking the streets looking like some cheaphussy.â
âI wish I could make love to you on a big four-poster bed with silksheets and flower petals sprinkled all around.â
âOh my, thatâs amazing!â
âWhat?â
âThatâs exactly the same wish that Iâve always had. Itâs unbelievable!â
âThatâs because in some ways weâre alike. Thatâs why we are meant to bedoing this.â
âYouâre so clever, Connie. Youâre always so right about everything. Youknow just what to say to make me feel good.â
âI also know just what to do to make you feel better than just good.â
She folded her arms across her large chest and asked, âSo, how do youwant to do it?â
I smiled inwardly remembering in my first life that it was I who hadasked very similar words on the day I had made love to her for the very firsttime. She had taught me well that day.
Now I would return the favor!
âLie down again and Iâll show you.â She obliged and I climbed onto thebed, standing above her. I looked down at her much larger frame in awe andappreciation. âOpen your legs.â
âWhy? What are you going to do?â
âStop worrying, Hannah. I wonât do anything you wouldnât want me to do.â
âPromise?â Then she laughed. âI guess I do ask people to promise a lot?â
âYou sure do,â I smiled before giving her the assurance that she so oftensought. âI promise.â Perhaps her need for guarantees is born from a lifetime ofbeing taken advantage of?
She spread her legs and I dropped onto my knees between hers. I then usedthe outside of my fingers to gently caress the insides of her thighs. âHowâsthat feel?â I asked.
âOkay. Nice, I guess?â
I heard the nervous tension in her voice. I could also feel it clearly inthe muscles beneath her smooth skin. I needed to be patient. âRelax,â Icrooned.
For the next fifteen minutes I felt like a horse whisperer, stroking andcalming an anxious filly. With each stroke I moved my fingers just a slight bitfurther up her thighs. I smiled as Ifelt the tension beneath my fingers fading with each caress. I knew I wasgaining ground when she unclenched her hands from on top of her chest andplaced them casually behind her head.
She smiled and said, âI really like what youâre doing. Youâre so gentleand loving with me. The other guys just wanted to get it over with as soon aspossible. And when they got what they wanted they had no more thoughts for anyof my needs or feelings.â
âI want you to be happy tonight. Do you want me to make you happy?â
âYes, Connie, very much so. Please.â
âYou wonât mind if I touch it then?â
This time the anxiety was from expectation. Her breathing had grown rapidas well. âI want you to. Please, do it!â
She tensed slightly, and for a moment her breathing ceased as my fingersfound warm wetness. Her mouth opened wide, but for the longest time she neveruttered a sound, although her tongue and bottom lip shivered and moved, as ifshe were a mute trying to force sound from her quivering throat and mouth.
Yep, she had given me permission to use her remote control. And Iutilized it to my utmost advantageâ¦and pleasure. I had felt like an evil geniuswho had, at his fingertips, the means to bend the mind of a physically largerand more powerful entity to do his bidding.
I also knew that I could make her do that bidding in such a fashion thatshe would believe that her actions were a product of her own desires andmaking.
And, as I am very familiar with the exact button to press to achieve thatdesired result, I had absolutely no problem activating her into action.
But, it required not only theknowledge to know where to find that particular button, but also the necessaryexperience to know how to subtly push it in the exact proper manner.
I had once been told, in my younger, rushed, inexperienced forays intothe mysterious realm of the female anatomy, that I was failing to producearousal, and had, in fact, created an incredible desire within the test subjecttoâ¦âtake a pee,â as she had so blatantly divulged to my eternal embarrassment.
But, fortunately, I have learned well from most of lifeâs little knocks, and I am a far better man and lover for it.
The worst mistake that any man can make in the sack with a woman is to beimpatient.
I donât have a timepiece, but I had made a point of checking the hallwayclock on my way up. It had been 10h45 pm. There was time enough to take time, but even an aroused woman has limits to her patience. And when it becomes timeto take her to that happy place (Not heaven, but very close to paradise.), anyfurther patience on the part of the man will be frustrating and annoying.
Foreplay and teasing are fine and necessary, but they have their limits.
About twenty minutes after my initial incursion, Hannah showed all thepositive signs that she had indeed been pushed to her limit, and that it wastime to push her button!
My finger moved up, and into position. She affirmed my accuracy with apositive and excited, âYes!â It took less than a minute to open her bomb baydoors. She started to repeat my name frantically. âConnie? Connie? Connie?â
âWhat?â
âI wantâ¦I want youâ¦I want you toâ¦â
âWhat?â
She was too ashamed to put her desire into words, so she simply andphysically created her intended desire in a series of four swift actions.
Firstly, she had pulled my hand away from the aforementioned button.
Secondly, she had sat bolt upright.
Thirdly she had enfolded her arms around me, squeezing tightly so that Ifound my head pressed snugly in between those delightful mounds of firm fleshthat dominated her large chest.
And fourthly, still clutching tightly, she laid back down again.
As she moved back again, my legs straightened, and I fell forward on topof her.
Maybe I had maneuvered my hips slightly, or maybe it had been just sheerluck, but Iâ¦we found the target first time - again! And in that same instance,I realized with a sensation of victory and ecstasy that, in this lifetime, TheRoxy was not to be my first.
I now had a new special place to file to memory.
Like the Roxy, my bedroom, had many wonderful memories. But no toy hadever given me this amount of pleasure.
Still clutching tightly, Hannah had unnecessarily issued the commands,âDonât stop now! Donât stop! Donât stop! Whatever you do, donât stop!â
I happily obliged and we actually both reached the happy place at exactlythe same time.
This time I reveled in the new tension in her thighs as she clamped metightly between her knees. She was suddenly endowed with incredible strength asshe crushed me to herself. My breath was forced out of me, and I felt pain inmy hips and ribs as her vice-like grips threatened to squash me. It was sheerbliss!
I was proud, that although I wouldstill grow to be much bigger, I had managed to produce thatcramping-pain-scream from her once again. And, unlike many of the women from myfirst life, I knew that it was genuine, unbridled pleasure that had made herexclaim her approval in an uncontrollable manner.
Thank goodness I was still wearing her large, fleshy earmuffs at thetime. I could feel her heart galloping frantically against my cheek as well.
My patience had paid off in the end.
When she finally relaxed, releasing my small frame from between herlarger arms and legs, I rolled over and, moving up, placed my head next to herson the pillow.
I waited, wanting and allowing her to speak first. She put the back ofher hand against her forehead before breathlessly admitting, âThat was the bestIâve ever had!â
I couldnât resist the old standardreply, âI bet you say that to all the guys?â
âNo!â she exclaimed itâs true. No guy has ever made meâ¦you knowâ¦get tothat part whereâ¦you knowâ¦it becomes reallyâ¦â
âLike a cramp?â
âNo! A cramp is painful! Thatâs likeâ¦I canât even describe it itâs sowonderful.â
âI told you I knew just what to do.â
âI never would have thought it possible to be so good from readingbooks?â
I laughed. âYou think I learned that from a book?â
âHow else?â
I felt like quoting Woody Allen and saying, âI'm such a good lover because Ipractice a lot on my own.â Instead I blandly answered, âSometimes it just takes a bit of common sense.â
âWell, you sure got plenty of that!â She thought for a moment, then askedwith a smile. âHow come you call himâ¦it, Mister Winky?â We both looked at theshiny subject.
My mother had probably given him that moniker because, as is the casewith most mothers, she would have found it embarrassing to use the correctanatomical term.
Although I lied to Hannah, the explanation seemed like a very valid one.âBecause he only has one eye, so heâs always winking. Look heâs winking at youright now â giving you the eye. He also thinks youâre the best.â
She laughed. âShame! Poor guy! I feel kinda sorry for him.â
âNah, heâs very happy that you helped us out. Besides, donât concern yourself too much about myone-eyed fella. He plans to have frequent visits to theâ¦Kingdom of the Blind.â
âWhat?â
âDonât youknow what they say? âIn the Kingdom of the Blind, the one-eyed man is king!â
âWhatâs thatmean?â
âI think itmeans that the disadvantaged are able to take advantage of themore-disadvantaged.â
âWould youever take advantage of me?â
The questionhad left me pondering too long. She gave me a push. âWould you?â
âYou meanlike what Frankie did?â
âYeah.â
âNope, Iwould never do something like that to youâ¦or any other woman â ever.â
âI know!Youâre a good guy, Connie.â
Before I knewit, the question had leapt out of my mouth. âAm I?â
I had felt a slight tinge of guilt! After all, the irony of the situationwas not lost to me:
A man in a childâs body had justseduced a child in a womanâs body!
If anyone is at fault, it is not Hannah. But, at least, I know for acertainty that both of us had found the experience extremely pleasurable andexhilarating!
âOf course!âShe grinned. âYouâreâ¦youâre my best friend now!â
âOh, who wasyour best friend? Well, maybe Ruth. But sheâs married now, and moved far away.â
âWhoâs Ruth?â
âMy eldersister, silly? Donât you remember her?â
âYouâve gotan elder sister?â
âYeah!â Shebecame pensive for a moment before saying, âRuthâs bright like you. Poppaalways jokes that itâs good she was born first.â
âWhyâs that?â
âHe says ifit had been me, he would definitely never have had any more children.â Shelaughed.
âYour fathersaid that â to you?â The anger in my voice was clearly discernible.
âHe was justjoking, silly! Relax.â
âI donâtthink that any father should ever say nasty things about, or to, his children.â
Again she became pensive for a moment then added in a depressed tone,âPoppa often calls me stupid when I make silly mistakes.â Then she smiledcheerily again. âBut you canât blame him, especially when I cost the bakerymoney at times. Last month I burned a whole batch of vanilla cookies.â
âWhat happened?â
âHe made me eat them all myself. Took me a whole week to do, but he madesure of it.â She smiled some more. âActually, they werenât all that bad. Wejust couldnât sell them to the customers is all.â
âDo you like working in the bakery?â
âIt can be tiring some days. But at least I get to spend most of my timewith my folks.â
âDonât you ever wish you had a place of your own?â
âOh, no! I would miss them too much.â
âYou said you want to have your own kids one day. What if your husbandwants to also move far away like Ruth did?â
âI dunno? Iâd really miss seeing them. I really miss Ruth too. We alwayshad such fun together. We used to bath together and everything. It was her whoshowed me how toâ¦you knowâ¦touch myself.â
âYeah?â
âYeah! I would never have known what happens, when you do it long enough,if it wasnât for her.â
âUh-huh?â
âSheâs so lucky and clever. Sheâs got two little boys. They can be realterrors. Just like you!â Her expression was of one that had been rudely slappedthrough the face. âI mean like you used to be. Iâm sorry! Iâm still gettingused to the fact that youâre not a child anymore. Sorry!â
âItâs okay! Relax! I understand!â I needed to change the subject. âIwanna ask you a favor?â
âYeah?â
âItâs not my right to tell you what to do, but itâs for your own good.â
âWhat?â
âTry to stay away from Frankie Hollywood?â
âYouâre jealous! Thatâs so sweet!â
âYeah, thatâs right. So will you do it â for me?â
âNobodyâs ever been jealous over me before. I think I like it.â
I made my young voice as stern and as demanding as possible. âWill you dowhat I asked?â
âIâll try, but heâs always popping up somewhere to tease me.â
âTrust me! You gotta stay away from him. Your Poppa is right. That guyâsjust trouble, okay? Heâll tell you anything to have his way. Look at what hedid tonight? He made a joke out of you in front of his pals. He had you intears. Youâre too good for him, Hannah. You forgive and forget too easily. Itâsa wonderful quality to have, but one day it could get you into serious trouble. If you see that guy coming towards you again, you run the other way, okay?â
âOkay, Connie. Iâll do it. But only because you asked me to.â
âPromise?â
âI promise!â
âPinky swear?â
âOkay!â She smiled offering me her little piggy.
âJust remember now, lightning will strike you dead if you donât?â
Iâm very happy that my mother was so determined and adamant about theneed to have an older person cater to mine and my sisterâs needs.
In fact, I canât wait for her to babysit us again!
