Chapter 16: Shadow of Uncertainty

SHATTERED Fears1,315 words~7 min read

The morning came slowly, with pale sunlight creeping through the cracks in the shelter’s walls. Jake had barely slept. The weight of the previous night—of the power he had witnessed, of the oppressive presence that had loomed over them—kept him awake. Every time he closed his eyes, he could still feel the aftershocks of that feeling, like the universe itself had turned its gaze upon them.

Mei stirred first, her movements quiet as she tried to shake off the exhaustion that clung to her. She glanced at Jake, then at the others, her expression betraying the same unease that gripped him. The team was still reeling from the events of the previous night, each person in their own world of thoughts, but none of them dared speak much. They knew they had to move quickly, but there were still too many questions.

Jake couldn't stop thinking about the girl. The one who had used her blood to take down the monsters. Her power had been unimaginable, and it had left him with more questions than answers. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized how little he understood her. She had saved them—but why? What was her endgame? And how did that raw power, that blood manipulation, play into whatever they were facing?

But Jake's internal conflict went deeper. He wanted to understand her. He wanted to know why she acted the way she did, why she kept herself distant. But there was a fear inside him—an understanding that pushing her might turn her against him. What if getting too close to her made them enemies instead of allies? He had already seen what she could do, and it scared him. The last thing he wanted was for that power to be turned against them.

Mei's voice broke his thoughts. “Jake, you’ve been quiet. You okay?”

Jake gave a half-hearted smile. “Yeah. Just thinking.”

Mei nodded, but there was a glimmer of something in her eyes. She was always quick to notice when something was off with him, and for a moment, he considered telling her what was really on his mind. But he couldn’t. Not yet. Not until he understood the girl better.

“I don’t trust them,” Mei said, her voice quieter this time. “The guards, I mean. There’s something off about them.”

Jake turned to her, surprised. “What do you mean?”

Mei’s eyes were sharp, her gaze darting between the male guard and the girl, as though she was piecing something together in her head. “There’s just too much secrecy. Why won’t they tell us what we’re really walking into? Why did they keep us in the dark about the monsters, about the city? I don’t like it.”

Jake’s thoughts mirrored hers. He had the same nagging sense of distrust, but at the same time, he couldn’t deny that the guards had saved them. But for what purpose? He had so many questions, and yet, every time he tried to ask, the answers were always just out of reach.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

“Let’s just focus on getting to the next city,” he said, trying to push the conversation forward. “We’ll get answers soon.”

Mei nodded but didn’t look entirely convinced.

The group started packing their things, moving quickly, each of them aware that time was not on their side. The silence between them felt heavy, laden with the unsaid—each of them holding back, unsure of where to go next. Jake’s eyes flicked toward the girl, who was methodically organizing her supplies, her face set in that unreadable expression. She hadn’t spoken much this morning, but then again, she never did.

Jake’s heart tightened. Why does she keep herself so distant? He had seen the pain in her eyes during their battle with the monsters, but now, it was like she had closed off entirely. The more he thought about it, the more it seemed like she was hiding something.

But that fear—of pushing her too far—kept him quiet.

After packing, the group sat down to share what little food they had. The guards, the girl, and the rest of the team gathered around the small fire, eating in the relative calm of the morning. The girl, as usual, sat apart from the others. Her posture was rigid, her eyes downcast, and she ate her food in silence, not once meeting anyone’s gaze.

The male guard, on the other hand, tried to break the silence. He spoke to Jake and Mei in a tone that was more casual than before, as though trying to bring them into the fold.

“So, you’re probably wondering what comes next, right?” he said, giving them a small smile. “We’ll head to the next city. It’s not far, but the roads are dangerous. You’ll need to keep your guard up.”

Jake glanced at the girl, then back at the guard. He still didn’t fully trust him. There was something too polished about the way he spoke, like he was trying too hard to make them feel comfortable. Jake didn’t need comfort—he needed answers.

The girl, noticing Jake’s gaze, met his eyes for a brief moment before looking away. Her silence spoke volumes, and in that instant, Jake felt the distance between them widen even further. She had closed herself off completely, and he wasn’t sure how to bridge the gap.

The guard continued speaking, oblivious to the tension in the air. “You’ve probably faced some tough battles already, but trust me, they’re nothing compared to what’s coming. The city we’re heading to is under heavy protection. Only the strongest make it through.” His eyes flicked toward the girl, then back to the group. “And with her help,” he added, “you’ll have a better chance.”

The girl didn’t react to the praise, nor did she acknowledge him. She simply kept eating, as if the conversation didn’t concern her. Jake felt an odd mix of frustration and sympathy for her. He knew that she wasn’t someone who welcomed praise or attention, but part of him wanted to break through the wall she had built around herself.

As the meal ended, the unease that had settled into the air the previous night returned. It was hard to ignore the silent tension that hung over the group, each person lost in their own thoughts. Just as the group was about to pack up, a distant sound suddenly cut through the air.

It was a low, almost guttural noise, like something large was moving in the distance. It didn’t sound like any monster they had encountered before. The sound carried with it a sense of unease, as if it was a warning—a call to something they weren’t meant to face.

“What was that?” Ava whispered, her eyes wide.

Ethan’s hand hovered over his weapon, his eyes scanning the horizon. “That sound… It’s not natural. It’s too… deep. Too ominous.” He paused, his expression hardening. “It could be a Fearborn. A strong one, probably.”

Jake’s gut clenched. The Fearborn were dangerous—beasts born from the darkest fears of humanity, creatures that could tear entire cities apart. But this? This didn’t sound like a typical Fearborn. This was something different.

The male guard remained calm, but there was a flicker of concern in his eyes. “Stay focused,” he said, his tone firm. “It’s still far off. We need to keep moving.”

But Jake couldn’t shake the feeling that whatever was out there wasn’t just another monster. It felt like something far more dangerous—something that had been waiting for them.

As they continued their journey through the abandoned city, the strange sound echoed again, closer now, more menacing. The atmosphere grew heavier with each step, as if the entire city was alive, watching them.

Jake's thoughts churned. What are we walking into? The question lingered, unanswered, as they pressed forward into the unknown.
