âSo, you are the two boys that are going to be my students?â said the bald man with the long beard. âI am Yvan, what are your names?â
Gandon looked at the man apprehensively. âThe king said a great master was going to teach us how to cast magic.â
Yvan laughed warm heartedly. âWhat makes someone great is subjectively to each one. What makes someone great according to you?â
âTheir intellect,â said Gandon without hesitation.
âTrue, you need a good head on your shoulder if you are going to learn the art of magic.â
âThen maybe I shouldnât be here,â said Ilmur while looking at the ground.
âYou boys, are still young, there will be many years yet before you have reached your full potential. But now at the moment I need your names.â
They gave them to him and Yvan nodded. âThis is a very peculiar situation, you Gandon wants to learn fire, and Ilmur wants to learn Ice, isnât that so?â
âIce is much cooler!â shouted Ilmur.
Yvan laughed again. âWell, that is true in a sense.â Yvanâs expression changed into a serious one. âPracticing magic is a serious matter, normally someone who can cast fire never learns the art of ice. To my knowledge, I am the only one who can. Thatâs why I have been chosen to teach you both magic, at the same time.â
Yvan unlocked the gates and they walked into the garden of magicians. âI am an elemental mage, I need these berries that we grow here to harness my power.â He paused to inspect the berries. âThere are four ways to cast magic, but there could be many more ways that we do not know about. I have already revealed one, do you know any other?â
âI have read about light magic, but that is really rare, never heard about anyone who has access to that magic,â said Gandon.
âAnd there is no light without a shadow,â said the master spookily.
âAre we going to learn dark magic?â asked Gandon.
âWe are going to learn about it. But if I ever hear that you have been practicing it you are out of here. Iâm born on a remote Island called Oban, and according to legend it was us who discovered the dark arts. To my great shame.â
âYou canât throw us out! The king has ordered you to teach us magic, youâll be exiled from the whole kingdom!â
The older man shrugged. âPerhaps, I have been in exile before, Oban is a place who accepts all outlaws, we have no loyalty to no king, and we govern our own affairs.â
âHe didnât mean it, master. He is just a little bit too excited, thatâs all,â said Ilmur.
âIf you two donât take your studies seriously and arenât coming here with a certain amount of maturity, I see no reason to waste my time on any of you. We have covered three areas of magic, whatâs the last one?â
None of the boys knew.
âThis does hardly surprise me; they are very rare and stay out of cities. They are called blue mages, those who learn magic by studying the magic in nature and in other beings. This is the slowest way of learning magic, and most people donât have the patience for it. But they arenât as restricted as we elemental mages. If you ever stumbled upon a blue mage, I suggest you ask them a thing or two, you might learn something. Even though they seldom like to talk to people. I spent a summer myself with mermaids in my youth, but to no avail.â
âDirty old man,â snickered Gandon behind Yvanâs back.
Ilmur gave a sign that he should stop. He looked afraid. Luckily the man didnât notice.
âYour father asked about this, but they couldnât afford to have you leave the capital years upon years. So, this is the way itâs going to be,â said Yvan with his arms behind his back. âThe studies are hard, but both of you are son to a king, and we will make sure that you will have time for your other tutors. Still interested?â
âI canât be without sword practice. Calvin, master at arms says that I have great potential.â
âFear not, life shouldnât be painted in one colour, I have other interests and duties as well.â
âSo, when can we begin?â asked Gandon.
âWe have already begun, see the berries over here that grow in four rows?â
âYes of course, I am not blind,â said Gandon.

âYour attitude you can leave behind the gates, my dear student,â said Yvan.
âI just donât like when people ask me questions that I can witness with my own eyes,â said Gandon with his arms folded.
âI was informed about you Gandon, you seem to do very well in your studies, but that is no excuse walking around thinking that you are better than everyone else. You two are only seven, you have seen nothing of this world yet, and barely started figuring out what life actually means. You will come to realize that when you study magic you are like a new-born babe, being forced to learn everything all over again.â
âItâs about time someone gives me a decent challenge,â said Gandon.
Yvan sighted. âThis will be a lot of work, but I have dealt with troublesome students before. I would like to slap the fool that said that there are no bad students, only bad teachers.â They walked over to a stone table that was displayed in the garden.
âWe are going to crunch some dried berries in this mortar, your bodies will not be used to the berries yet, and I will have to give them to you in very small doses. If your stomachs hurts during the night, call for me right away.â

Several hours later the boys were upon a hill practicing with their wooden swords. Gandonâs fingers were hurting, he tried a piercing attack but that was to no avail. He had never beaten Ilmur in a fight, and today was no exception. The thick forest was next to Gandonâs back, they liked to play in the tall trees, but they never dared to venture very far. Some people believed that the forest was cursed, strange that the woodcutters seemed to be doing alright then.
Gandon threw away his sword, enough was enough. The sun was starting to go down over the hill and the city it was a beautiful view, and his favorite place. Here he could feel at peace, he was often angry in the city.
âWhat are you thinking about?â asked Ilmur.
âThe people at court have started to call me a bastard more frequently now. they arenât even bothering to hide it now. I wonder who my parents were, why did they abandon me?â
âWhat do you mean? father is father.â
âIlmur, look at me. You are white as a ghost compared to me, there is no way we have the same mothers.â
Ilmur looked uncomfortable. âI guess I never really thought about it, but I guess you are right. Whoever they were, they didnât abandon you, they made sure that you would have a good life, that you were cared for. Father and mother treat you like their own son, I would say that mother treats you better than the rest of us even.â
Gandon sighted. âWill I ever know where I come from? I asked Elram about it, and he said weâll talk about it when Iâm older, but that sounded like an excuse to me.â
It was clear that Ilmur didnât know what to say. âLetâs go back, otherwise weâll be in trouble soon.â
âYeah, maybe a game of five towers before bed?â
âYeah, who knows, I might even win tonight!â
âOh, Ilmur, how I envy your optimism, you never seem to run out of it.â
Gandon slept well during the night, but he heard during the morning that Ilmur had called the servants to fetch Yvan, fearing for his life.
âI canât believe your teacher in your magic studies are this responsible, Iâve clearly misjudged the man,â said Geor.
Gandon looked at his friend, he had never seen Ilmur in a condition this bad. The skin had a grey hue to it and his eye bags were as big as apples, he seemed to be shivering as well. Gandon shook his head.
âOur master warned that this could happen, he gave us as small doses as he possibly could.â
âYou donât feel any after effects?â asked Geor.
âI feel fine, I have even more energy than normal,â said Gandon.
âWell, good to hear that not both of you are suffering. Go to bed Ilmur, you wonât get anything done today.â
âI think Iâm starting to feel a little bit better, but why must it be so hot in here?â
âItâs almost winter, go to bed now!â
Geor went out in the corridor and called for one of the servants.
âSorry, Gandon,â said Ilmur.
âDonât worry about it, just go and have as much rest as you need.
Ilmur left with the servants, Gandon thought that he recognized her but couldnât remember the name.
âIlmur have an excuse to not study today but you donât have any.â
âAnd I have given none,â said Gandon.
Geor snickered. âI always forget that you are not like normal boys Gandon, most would leave the school bench if they had the chance but you are always the scholar.â
They were going through the alphabet again, Gandon felt it was rather pointless but he understood that Geor didnât want to teach him anything new while Ilmur wasnât present. He hoped he would read anything interesting today. He had gotten rather fond of reading about dragons and phoenixes.
A knock could be heard, and Yvan entered the room. âApologizes for interrupting, master scholar but I wanted to see how my students are doing. Iâve seen to Ilmur, he will be alright with rest and plenty of water. How are you doing Gandon, do you feel any discomfort at all?â
âI feel better than usual, itâs like I have a burning fire inside me, I could skip sleep for a day or two, if I wanted it.â
Yvan looked almost surprised that Gandonâs comment. âAt the mortar I mixed berries from all the four elements, this is a good way to find out which kind of elements arenât working. Ilmur couldnât handle the heat and probably shouldnât go near the fire berries again. You on the other hand seemed to thrive with fire as an element.â
âWell, Ilmur never wanted to learn fire to begin with,â said Gandon.
âTrue, but itâs good to see that neither of you two have an affinity with air or earth, then we would have to find you a new teacher.â
âSo, both of us can still study with you?â Gandon didnât want him and Ilmur to be split up with different teachers.â
âYes, Iâm going to both take you under my wing. I feel this is going to be rather exciting, a son to a king and a boy who might be a prodigy, that remains to be seen of course, but I was rather impressed with how well you have been handling these berries.â
Gandonâs chest almost puffed up with pride. It would feel good to be good as something, he was not bad with his studies Geor gave him, but it didnât excite him, not yet at least.
âIâll be in contact soon, but Iâm not going to disturb your studies for the rest of the day. Weâll wait until Ilmur has recovered.â
âIlmur is though, you donât have to wait for long,â said Gandon.
