Chapter 7: A Voice in the Archive

After Erisys vanished, silence returned—but it no longer felt empty.

It felt watched.

Caelum stumbled forward, vision smeared with static. His memories flickered like torn film. Was he walking through forest or memory? He couldn’t tell.

Until he found the door.

It wasn’t built—it was written. A shimmering outline of a doorway inscribed mid-air, carved from sentences, fragments, and half-remembered prayers. Some in languages long extinct. Others still wet with meaning.

The door opened.

Caelum stepped into the Archive.

A realm not made of stone or sky, but of possibility. Shelves stretched endlessly in all directions—built from metaphor and reinforced by memory. Tomes floated, weeping ink. Scrolls wrote and unwrote themselves, trying to correct stories that had never occurred.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

One shelf held legends of Sun Wukong—but half the pages were burned. Another showed Alexander breaking through the Gates of Horn, crowned not in gold but regret.

This place wasn’t for heroes.

It was for failures.

And Caelum’s presence made the ink tremble.

----------------------------------------

A voice—neither kind nor cruel—echoed from behind the stacks:

“You were not supposed to exist.”

Caelum turned.

An old man emerged, cloaked in literal parchment. His eyes were blank, filled only with half-finished verses.

“I am the Storykeeper,” the man said. “And you… are an error.”

Caelum didn’t flinch. “Then write me out.”

The old man chuckled like cracking pages. “We tried. Every myth born was meant to overwrite you. Every fragment, every legend, every flame… designed to eclipse your echo.”

“But I’m still here,” Caelum replied.

“Yes. You are stubborn.”

----------------------------------------

The Storykeeper held up a book—its cover blank, yet Caelum knew it was his.

Inside, no chapters. No fate. Just the ticking of something building.

“You are not like them,” the Storykeeper said. “You do not build a myth. You... unravel them.”

He leaned close, ink dripping from his mouth.

“And yet… part of me wonders what would happen if you chose to write your own.”

----------------------------------------

A distant bell rang.

Something stirred in the upper stacks. A shiver ran through the Archive as names began blinking out across the ceiling. One after another. Vanishing from history.

“Something comes,” the Storykeeper whispered.

“What?”

“Your shadow.”
