Evadne could feel Thaddeusâs every hot, heavy breath against her neck, as warm as a flame flickering against her porcelain skin.
A blush spread across her cheeks where his breath had touched.
âThaddeus! Are you out of your mind? What on earth are you talking about? Thaddeus!â
Sweat soaked through the thin fabric of his pyjamas, wetting not only his clothes but also Evadneâs.
Thaddeus was delirious with fever, his mind foggy and his body racked with pain as if it were falling apart.
All he could think of was to hold onto the woman he loved. No matter how degrading or shameless it seemed, he just couldnât bear to let go.
âEvadne, donât leave me. Donât hate me.â
His wet face buried in her shoulder, his choked voice was heartbreaking to hear.
Evadne felt the heat on her shoulder, unsure if it was his sweat or his tears.
In an instant, a wave of pain spread from her trembling heart to every nerve, slowly binding her heart.
She thought, "Thaddeus, you have never been this humble in front of me. When I was crying, betting all my pride begging you not to divorce me, not to leave me, you mercilessly threw the divorce papers in front of me, forcing me to cut all ties with you, acting high and mighty, like a cold and detached deity."
Evadne watched his pitiful state, biting her lip, her eyes reddening, âThaddeus, are you delirious? What nonsense are you talking about?â
âItâs not nonsense. Itâs the truth.â
Thaddeus shook his head stubbornly, beads of sweat rolling down his handsome face, âEvadne, I love you.â
Evadneâs eyes widened.
She stiffened her neck, appearing calm, but her ears were flushed red.
With the last bit of strength, he raised his head and gently touched her face.
His eyes were filled with deep love and longing, blurred yet touching.
âEvadne, I know what Iâm saying. Iâm saying I love you. Only you.â
The next second, Thaddeus lost consciousness and collapsed heavily onto her.
âUgh, damn it! Why does this have to happen here? Youâre so heavy!â
Evadneâs eyes widened in panic and annoyance, her fists clenched, ready to punch him in the back.
But remembering his injuries, she released her grip and gently placed her hand on his soaked back, sighing softly.
âShould have known better. Thaddeus, loving you is too painful, letâs both just move on.â
Jareth and Gordon arrived at the villa at the same time.
Although Gordon sometimes acted like a hot-blooded young man, he was still the Chief Secretary of the Abernathy Group and was good at reading the room.
He noticed that Mr. Jarethâs expression was very bad, very bad indeed.
âMr. Gordon, howâs your boss doing?â Jareth asked anxiously.
âHe vomited blood twice and has a high fever.â
Gordon remembered Thaddeusâ painful state from the night before, his heart aching as if he wished he could take the pain for him.
âHow the hell did this happen? Damn it!â Jarethâs eyes were bloodshot, his fists clenched.
âIâve informed Mrs. Abernathy. Mr. Thaddeus has been taking the medicine Mrs. Abernathy gave him and has gotten much better. Iâm sure Mrs.
Abernathy will have a solution!â Gordon didnât have any better ideas, so he could only place all his hopes on Evadne.
At that moment, Jareth noticed the black Bugatti parked at the entrance, recognizing it as Evadneâs car.
He pondered for a moment, his eyes narrowing, âWait, letâs not rush in.â
âHuh?â Gordon looked confused.
âThey rarely have time alone together. Let them have a moment.â
If he didnât help out his friend at this time, what kind of friend would he be?
Thaddeus, who was nearly six-foot-three, collapsed on the floor, moving him back to the room was like moving a mountain.
Thankfully, there was an elevator in the villa, and Evadne, with much effort, dragged Thaddeusâs body back to the room like moving a corpse. By the time she helped him onto the bed, her dress was soaked with sweat from both of them.
âYouâre so heavy! I really want to dismember you!â
Evadne was panting from the effort, but she had no time to rest. She quickly ran into the bathroom, soaked a towel in cold water, and brought it back to cool Thaddeus down.
After finishing, she sat on the edge of the bed, too tired to move.
âYouâre really something, causing all this trouble with your high fever. Do you know how troublesome you are?â
Evadne looked at Thaddeus, who was delirious with fever, her tone cold, but her heart was filled with unease.
After all, it was because of her that he was in this state.
âEvadne.â Thaddeusâs eyes were tightly closed, his long lashes trembling, even his sleep-talking was filled with affection for her.
âAlright, alright, stop moaning like a ghost. Iâm here.â
Evadne muttered to herself, pouting her lips, âIf I knew there would be so much trouble, I would have sent Jason instead, so I wouldnât have to deal with your mess. Just rest.â
Evadne was about to get up to look for some fever-reducing medicine.
Suddenly, Thaddeus opened his eyes, which were red from the fever, and quickly grabbed her wrist.
Evadneâs face changed, she struggled, âWhen did you wake up? Or did you never faint? You tricked me, didnât you?â
âIâve never lied to you.â
Thaddeusâs breathing was labored, but the hand holding her wrist tightened, as if he was afraid she would escape, âI just heard in my dream that you were leaving, so I forced myself to wake up. Donât go. Stay with me for a while, just a little while.â
His usually cold eyes were teary, full of a warm glow that was only for her, deep and affectionate.
Evadneâs heart fluttered like a buoy floating in the lake.
She was brusque and terse, not even attempting to sugarcoat her words. "I've contacted Gordon and he'll be here soon. I've brought the medicine, and I helped you into bed. I've done what I should.
"But staying with you is not my role. We're divorced, Mr. Thaddeus, don't make this any harder than it needs to be."
However, as Evadne started to rise, Thaddeus sharply pulled her back into his warm embrace.
"Thaddeus!"
Immediately, a sense of vertigo washed over her, and Evadne let out a startled cry.
Thaddeus quickly rolled onto his side, positioning her beneath him.
Being careful not to apply too much pressure on her, he supported his weight on his elbows, his muscular arms visible beneath his shirt.
Their breaths were fast, entangled, mingled.
Evadne looked up at the man's face, his eyes clear and bewitching, like he was gazing at a sky full of stars.
"Didn't you say that you wouldn't force me?"
Her cheeks suddenly flushed, a tingling sensation spreading throughout her body.
A bead of Thaddeus's sweat unexpectedly fell onto her face, leaving a metaphorical burn in her heart. "Your words are worthless. You contradict yourself immediately. Are you playing games?"
"Who asked you to come see me at such a crucial time?"
Thaddeus' lips slightly curved into a smile, his desire obvious as he held her tightly, his gaze fixed on her as if spellbound, "Ms. Evadne, are you trying to kill me while I'm weak?"
Evadne's face turned beet red, as she tried to argue back.
But Thaddeus didn't give her the chance.
He grasped her chin, lowering his head and capturing her lips in a dominant kiss, prying open her mouth and entangling her in his heat.
Downstairs, Jareth and Gordon waited awkwardly.
Gordon paced anxiously, occasionally glancing up the staircase.
Meanwhile, Jareth sat on the couch, his face dark as he stared unblinkingly at the video footage on his phone.
Over and over, he obsessively watched the clip of Marilla being bullied by Edith.
The more he watched, the angrier he became.
"Mr. Jareth, what are you watching so intently?" Gordon asked curiously.
Jareth coldly looked up, "Mind your own business."
Gordon was taken aback by the icy stare and quickly retreated.
As Jareth watched the video again, he noticed Marilla's fearful reaction when Edith approached her. She curled up into a pitiful ball, her hands tightly covering her head. Her actions were too practiced, causing a pang of heartache in Jareth.
Wait a minute!
Jareth frowned, paying close attention to Marilla's actions.
Was she acting like someone with PTSD? Could it be that she had often been physically abused at home?
Was that why she had such a terrified reaction when Edith raised her hand at her?
Was that it?
"When did you two get here? How come I didn't know?"
Evadne came down from the stairs and was surprised to see the two men quietly sitting in the living room.
She quickly tried to calm her erratic breathing.
Jareth quickly hid his phone, showing a mischievous grin towards Evadne, "Well, we didn't want to intrude. You two lovebirds finally have some time alone. It's better for us to not be a third wheel."
"Lovebirds? Really?"
Evadne was so angry she was practically spitting fire, wishing she could poke Jareth's smug face with her high heels!

Seeing her flushed cheeks and glossy lips, Jareth, a man of experience, raised his eyebrows in amusement.
He thought, "Thaddeus, you've done it, haven't you? Wow, you're a sly one, aren't you?"
"Mrs. Abernathy! You're finally here! Mr. Thaddeus is saved!" Gordon exclaimed with stars in his eyes, almost tearing up.
Evadne didn't have time to correct his address. She said seriously, "Mr. Gordon, Mr. Thaddeus's fever is a result of his internal injuries resurfacing. It's not something to be taken lightly. I've contacted a private hospital under the K Group's ownership, and arranged for their best doctors to see him. You and Mr. Jareth should prepare to take him there."
Gordon bowed deeply, "Thank you, Mrs. Abernathy! I knew you still cared for Mr. Thaddeus! You wouldn't let him suffer!"
"Whether or not I care for him has nothing to do with me not wanting to see him suffer. Don't twist my words."
Evadne's words were harsh. She refused to play into Gordon's narrative.
She descended the stairs and walked over to Jareth, her gaze was icy.
Jareth met her gaze, feeling a strange pressure in his chest.
"Mr. Jareth, can we talk?"
