Guests were pouring into another hall, preparing for the upcoming auction.
Evadne slipped away from the media, seeking refuge in the corridor.
"Miss Evadne!" Jason rushed to her side, his face etched with worry. "Are you alright?"
"Just a few persistent journalists. What's the worst they could do? Cause a little ripple?"
Evadne's eyes were calm, her eyebrows slightly furrowed. "You shouldn't be here with me. You should be in the hall, managing the event."
"But I'm worried about you."
Jason's voice was almost hoarse with anxiety. "Those journalists were clearly prepared. They were sent by someone to deliberately make things difficult for you! They keep bringing up our past mistakes, just to embarrass you!"
"This is normal, isn't it? When you organize a charity event, do you expect the journalists to only sing your praises?"
Evadne crossed her arms, her expression indifferent. "Besides, they're not wrong. There were indeed oversights in my management, giving some flamboyantly dressed peacocks the chance to peck at me. I can't blame anyone else for that."
Flamboyantly dressed peacocks.
A mental image of Elspeth and her daughter appeared in Jason's mind.
"But, there's one thing you said that I don't agree with. Those journalists were indeed sent by someone, but not to destroy me, but to aid me."
Evadne leaned against the wall, her fingertips tracing her arm. "Let Glynnis have her moment of triumph. I'm an expert at letting my opponents believe they have the world at their fingertips, only to make them fall from that great height and crash and burn. It's entertaining."
Watching Evadne's increasingly dark look in her eyes, Jason couldn't help but shiver. She was indeed as ruthless as President Ashbourne. This rose, as beautiful as it was, came with thorns and poison.
The event required Jason's attention as the managing secretary, so he hurried back to the hall.
Evadne had been working tirelessly all day, having only a simple breakfast and skipping lunch and dinner. She hadn't even had a sip of water.
She collapsed onto the couch, famished and weak, kicking off her high heels to reveal her bare feet.
Curled up pathetically, she was so hungry that her stomach was cramping.
"I'm so hungry."
Evadne murmured weakly, her eyes slowly closing.
Suddenly, she faintly smelled the rich aroma of chocolate, which seemed to be invading her nostrils.
She thought she was hallucinating from hunger, her nose twitching like a cute puppy following the scent.
"Are you just going to sniff it? Not going to eat?"
A deep, pleasant voice rang out, but it was cold as ice.
Evadne's heart skipped a beat, and she opened her eyes wide.
She found herself looking into Thaddeus's deep star-filled eyes.
There was no denying the lethal allure of those stunning eyes, no matter the time or place.
At that moment, Evadne was lying sideways on the couch, looking at Thaddeus who was kneeling in front of her with a chocolate cupcake in his hand.
Her hands, which were covering her empty stomach, tightened involuntarily.
In their three years of marriage, Thaddeus had never once bowed or lowered his head for her.
During the time when she was infatuated with him, always running towards him like a moth to a flame, the one who was crying, feeling wronged, and humiliated was always her, Evadne.
Her thoughts wandered, and she felt her eyes well up with tears, her breathing becoming erratic.
Thaddeus continued to kneel, seeing her lack of response, his brows furrowed slightly, "Aren't you hungry? Why aren't you eating? This is your favorite chocolate flavor. Don't worry, it's not poisoned."
"I'm not eating."
Evadne's throat was choked with inexplicable emotions, feeling sad and wronged.
"Alva told me your stomach has always been sensitive. Going too long without eating can harm it."
"I said, I'm not eating!"
With a swift motion, Evadne, tears brimming in her eyes, hit the cupcake out of Thaddeus's hand.
"Evadne!!"
The cupcake landed far away, smashed to pieces.
Thaddeus looked at her, a surge of disappointment flooding him, as if a bucket of ice water had been poured over him, chilling him to the bone.
It wasn't just the cupcake that was smashed, but also his heart.
"Evadne, what the hell is wrong with you? Can't you tell right from wrong?"
Evadne slowly sat up, no longer feeling hungry. She was filled with a chaotic mix of emotions and resentment. "I hate you, and I hate it even more when you're being nice to me for no reason. Thaddeus, do you know that treating me like this feels like you're insulting me?"
"What the hell are you talking about?" Thaddeus frowned, finding her unreasonable.
"I'm saying stay away from me. I don't need your kindness, not even a little bit."
Evadne, pale but undeniably beautiful, stood up despite the pain in her stomach. "Is it because Acacia left you, and now you don't know where to direct your affection? I'm not a trash can, and I don't want your secondhand affections. If you want to degrade yourself, go ahead. But I'm not lowering my standards!"
Thaddeus clenched his fists, his eyes turning red with humiliation and injustice.
All he did was see her suffering from hunger and wanted to offer her a cupcake to fill her stomach. How could she demonize him like this, and why did she have to be so cruel and relentless?
Evadne put on her high heels and walked away, her back straight and her mind determined.
Thaddeus picked up the smashed cupcake, watching her heartless departure, and found it hard to catch his breath.
Now Evadne no longer gave him the bright smiles she used to.
Their failed marriage was a deep and painful shadow in her heart.
It made her like a soldier who had narrowly escaped death on the battlefield and was left with post-traumatic stress disorder. Any small act of kindness from him would set her on edge, making her wary and suspicious.
Thaddeus's thin lips trembled, suppressing the sharp pain in his heart, crushing the cupcake in his hand.
A person, a relationship.
It seemed that he had ruined it all.
In the hall.
There was still some time before the auction. As two big names in the fashion and entertainment industries, Iris and Ada naturally attracted the attention of everyone present, with the media constantly surrounding them for interviews.
Elspeth was chatting with other high-society ladies, while Glynnis and Edith were each plotting their own schemes.
Glynnis planned to take a photo with Ada and then accept another round of media interviews. After all, she was the one who had secured the collaboration, and she wanted to publicize this fact as much as possible to demonstrate her capabilities.
Edith was hoping to snap a picture with Iris, thinking it might boost her fashion street creds and pave her way into the chic circles.
"Miss Ada! I didn't expect you to wear the necklace to this event, you must really like it!"
Glynnis, seeing Ada wearing the necklace she gave her, quickly found an excuse to strike up a conversation.
Journalists swarmed them, cameras flashing non-stop.
"Of course, I do. After all, it's a piece by Miss Alea."
Ada might not appreciate Glynnis's flamboyant and superficial personality, but since she had gifted her the necklace and The Abernathy Group was sponsoring her wedding, she couldn't afford to be cold towards her.
So, she put an arm around her waist and posed for a picture.
Seeing the superstar warming up to her and even getting close, Glynnis was overjoyed!
"Miss Ada! At tonight's charity auction, are you planning to bid for an item to contribute to charity, or are you planning to donate an item to add color to the event?" a reporter asked.

"Wow! What kind of treasured jewelry? Can you reveal it?"
"Let's keep it a surprise. You'll find out soon."
Meanwhile, Edith was also looking for an opportunity to approach Iris.
Finally, when Iris finished her interview, she mustered up the courage and walked up to her.
"Ms. Iris! Wait, please!"
Iris heard the call, stopped, and looked at Edith, who was full of smiles, from behind her sunglasses.
She didn't recognize Edith and noticing her dress, a new season's haute couture piece that didn't suit her skin tone or body shape, she figured she was just another tasteless woman who only bought expensive, not suitable items. Thus, she had no desire to engage with her.
"Ms. Iris, I've grown up reading Ethereal Vogue, which you edited. I'm a big fan!" Edith's round face was flushed with shyness as she flattered Iris.
"Since childhood? Hmm, am I that old?" Iris replied in a lukewarm way.
"No, no, you're not old at all!"
Edith, embarrassed and sweating, hurriedly explained, "I mean, I really admire you! I adore you!"
Before she could finish, Iris had already moved past her without even a glance.
"Ms. Iris!" Edith picked up her skirt and turned around, her face pale.
"President Ashbourne, I've been waiting for you!"
Iris's lips curled up in a smile as she eagerly walked towards Evadne.
As if they were old friends who had known each other for years!
