Evadneâs eyes shimmered with tears, her whole body jolting in shock.
She looked down, staring blankly at her empty hands.
Once, every precious moment had started with Thaddeus reaching out to hold her. When they kissed, cuddled, or intertwined their fingers, heâd whisper promises in her earâpromises that no matter what happened, heâd never let go.
But now, his hand slipped coldly from hers, leaving nothing behind.
In that split second, pain sliced through Evadne, sharp as if her very bones were being torn from her flesh.
Gordon, standing nearby, looked utterly stunnedâhis face drained white.
No one knew better than him just how much Thaddeus had loved Evadne before the accident. Theyâd been inseparable. But now, after waking from his coma, Thaddeus hadnât lost his memory, yet it was as if heâd become a different person. He was distant with everyone: Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Frederic, and worst of all, with the woman he once loved so fiercely.
âGrandpa, Dad.â
Thaddeus finally broke the silence, shifting his gaze from Evadneâs devastated eyes. His voice was low and flat. âIâm tired. I need to rest. Can you leave me alone for a while?â
Frederic froze, caught off guard.
His youngest had always been reservedânot like his older brother, who was charming and endlessly diplomatic. Thaddeus had always kept his feelings close, never letting his emotions show.
But since heâd woken up, it was like something inside him had frozen solid.
Frederic could only nod, trying to keep his voice steady. âOf course, son. You rest up, and weâll come back to see you when you wake.â
Thaddeus didnât answer. He simply lay down, turning his back to everyone. Shutting them all out.
Including Evadne.
ââ
After leaving the hospital room, Evadne ran, half-mad with grief, straight to Dr. Chasel Brightâs office.
Frederic had forbidden visitors from the Ashbourne family, but Dr. Bright was world-renowned in neurology, and the Abernathy family had insisted he continue Thaddeusâs treatment.
âChasel... why? Why is Thaddeus like this now?!â
Evadne could barely get the words out, choking on her sobs. âHe hasnât forgotten meâhe remembers everythingâbut heâs like a stranger. What happened to him?!â
Chasel studied the latest brain scans, his brow furrowed deeply.
âThaddeus suffered severe damage to his amygdalaâthe part of the brain that controls emotions. Thatâs why heâs so detached from everyone. Itâs like his emotional signals have been cut off, like a cell phone with no reception. Heâs locked away inside himself, unable to connect.â
Evadneâs mind reeled, bombarded by this fresh wave of heartbreak. She trembled, barely able to speak.
âWill... will he ever be able to live a normal life?â
âFor the most part, yes,â Chasel replied gently. âHe can work, probably even more efficiently than beforeâhe wonât be distracted by emotions. Heâll be focused, almost machine-like.â
He couldnât bring himself to look at her, staring instead at the scans in his hands. âBut heâs lost the ability to love or care for anyone.â
Evadneâs heart twisted painfully. âWhat do you mean?â
âHeâll never love again. Emotionally, heâs alone in his own world. To him, family, friends, even you... youâre just people. Youâre not special anymore.â
âThat canât be... He remembers me, he remembers everything we went through!â Evadneâs voice was hoarse, raw with desperation.
âBut memories arenât enough, Evadne. He might remember you loved each other, but he canât feel it anymore.â
Chasel finally looked at her, his voice gentle but unflinching. âMemories are just memories. To someone with emotional impairment, theyâre weightless.â
He couldnât lie to her. Sometimes the truth, however painful, was kinder in the long run.
But Evadne wasnât ready to give up. Through her tears, she pleaded, âIsnât there anything we can do? There has to be a way to bring his emotions back!â
âIâll try hypnotherapy as a next step, but thereâs only a fifty-fifty chance itâll work. And we have to be carefulâif we push too hard, he could have a mental breakdown.
âThereâs also electroconvulsive therapy. Sometimes, a strong electric shock can stimulate emotional response.â
Evadne shook her head fiercely, eyes squeezed shut against the thought.
âNo... Iâve read about that. Itâs brutalâboth physically and mentally. He had depression as a child, and after he came back from the Army, he went through it once already. I canât let Thaddeus suffer through that again...â
Chasel paused, then his eyes lit up with a sliver of hope. âWell, sometimes, a personâs emotions can be triggered by an extreme shockâintense anger, heartbreak, trauma. It might force his emotions back to the surface.â
It was an option. But how could they make that happen?
âEvadne, Iâm not telling you this to hurt youâI just want you to be prepared for anything.â
Chasel stood and gave her a gentle hug. âYouâre the bravest woman I know. Take care of yourself and take things one step at a time. Thaddeus may still come back to you.â
ââ
When she left Chaselâs office, Evadne wandered the hospital corridors, feeling hollow, like a soul separated from her body. She didnât know where to go.
Eventually, she drifted out to a balcony, gazing up at the starless, black sky. Memories of Thaddeus flooded her mindâthe sweetness of their love, every shared laugh, every embrace.
The deeper they had loved, the harsher the pain.
Sheâd tried so hard to hold it together, to be strong. But now, alone, her heartbreak overwhelmed her.
She covered her face with her hands and sobbed.
Suddenly, she felt a gentle touch on her arm.
Startled, she wiped away her tears and looked down.
A slender, elegant hand offered her a clean handkerchief.
