Evadne turned, her eyes glistening with tears, to see Frederic storming into the hospital room, a storm of anger and frustration radiating from him.
âFrederic, why are you shouting like that?â she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Though Hamilton was Frederic's father, his protective instincts kicked in for Ilana, and he mustered all his strength to speak firmly, âWhat do you mean he's done for? Thaddeus hasn't lost an arm or a leg; he's just unconscious for now! Are you really cursing your own son?â
âIf you think he's beyond hope, instead of yelling here, you might as well get started on the arrangementsâit might even bring Thaddeus some luck!â
âDad, at a time like this, you're still siding with this girl?â Frederic was furious, his eyes bloodshot as he glared at Evadne. âIâm beginning to think youâre the curse in Thaddeusâ life! What did he ever do to you to deserve this?â
Evadne, usually so quick with words, found herself speechless, her fingers clenching tightly, enduring the weight of his accusations in silence.
Her silence only fueled Fredericâs anger further, and in a fit of rage, he raised his hand, ready to strike her pale face.
âFrederic, stop!â Hamiltonâs eyes widened in shock, but his frail body was powerless to intervene.
Evadne closed her swollen eyes, not flinching from the impending blow.
She felt she deserved it. Fredericâs words rang true; she blamed herself for Thaddeusâ condition.
She deserved to be hit, to be punished.
Smackâ!
Evadneâs frail body flinched!
Yet, the slap never landed.
Slowly, she opened her tear-filled eyes.
The sight before her took her breath away, her heart clenching tightly with disbelief.
Fredericâs hand, poised in mid-air, was firmly grasped by the unexpected arrival of Chad, who had appeared seemingly out of nowhere.
What shocked Evadne even more was that Chad wasnât in a wheelchair.
He was standing, on his own two feet!

Hamilton was equally astonished, his gaze sweeping over Chadâs tall, composed figure.
âDad, no matter what, thereâs no excuse for violence.â Chadâs voice was calm, his eyes meeting Evadneâs with a depth and sincerity that was impossible to ignore. âThaddeus was protecting the person he loved. That was his choice. I donât believe Ms. Evadne is to blame. I know youâre hurting for Thaddeus, but itâs not right to take it out on someone whoâs innocent.â
Evadneâs brow furrowed, her teeth sinking into her lip.
With those words, Chad released Frederic's hand.
Frederic flinched, feeling the pain in his wrist, looking down to see it reddened.
âMaster Chad! Please, be careful!â Alexia hurried over, pushing a wheelchair towards him, ready to assist Chad in sitting down.
Chad chuckled softly, his eyes crinkling, âIâm alright. Iâm not that fragile. Sometimes, itâs good to stretch your legs.â
âChad, your legs... theyâre okay?â Frederic asked, his eyes fixated on his sonâs long legs beneath the sleek black trousers, momentarily forgetting his anger towards Evadne.
Chad gave a small, serene smile, his gaze brushing over Evadne like a gentle breeze, âDad, just because I use a wheelchair doesnât mean my legs donât work.â
