Helgenâ
The enigma of the mountaintop mansion.
Lush greenery, picturesque views.
In the dimly lit bedroom, a soothing lavender candle burned quietly on an antique holder, its gentle smoke curling through the air, bringing a sense of peace. All the chaos of the world outside seemed to fade away here.
Evadne lay stretched out on the plush, king-sized bed, her lashes resting softly on her cheeks as she slept.
She was still in her pristine wedding dress, a vision of beauty and fragility. Even fairy tale princesses would pale in comparison.
A tall, elegant figure sat in a wheelchair, backlit and silent, facing Evadne.
âSir, I've checked her over. There are no visible injuries,â Alexia reported. She had dabbled in medicine enough to handle a basic examination. âHer blood tests came back showing traces of sedatives and anesthesia, but nothing harmful.â
With a hint of sarcasm, she added, âI told you, Avery loves her too much to poison her.â
âA little caution never hurts.â Chad Abernathy's voice was smooth and clear, like a gentle breeze through a crystal chime. âIt seems Ms. Evadne has had a rough time on Rose Island. I recall she was once a picture of health, well cared for by my brother. Now, she seems more fragile. Still, she's breathtakingly beautiful.â
âSir, in all my years with you, I've rarely heard you praise anyone,â Alexia remarked, her tone betraying a tinge of jealousy. âYou're quite taken with Ms. Evadne.â
Chad's lips curved into a faint smile. âAre you jealous?â
Alexia bit her lip. âNo.â
âIs it no, or you just don't dare?â
She looked down, conceding, âNeither, sir. I wouldn't dare.â
âAlexia, you're not lacking compared to others. If anything, it's your lack of patience, strategy, and composure.â
Chad's gaze was amused, âRemember what I've taught you.â
âDo not fall in love, do not become attached, and do not look back,â Alexia recited with a hint of bitterness. âWithout you, I wouldn't be who I am today.
Your teachings are engraved in my heart, sir.â
âEmotions are unnecessary by my side. They lead to mistakes.â Chad's eyes were deep and mysterious. âI need absolute loyalty.â
He then instructed Alexia to bring Hans, who had been waiting outside.
âGood job on this mission,â Chad praised, his smile warm.
Hansâs face remained stoic, as he bowed respectfully. His eyes, however, lingered briefly on the girl sleeping peacefully.
Chad maneuvered his electric wheelchair closer to the bed, his gaze softening as he looked at Evadneâs serene face.
âWhen you took Ms. Evadne away, how was my brother?â he asked.
âAvery gave the three pills you provided him to Thaddeus,â Hans replied in a monotone. âThaddeus swallowed all three in front of Avery.â
âWhat?!â Alexia's eyes widened, glancing nervously at Chad.
Chadâs expression remained calm, inscrutable. After a moment, a knowing smile appeared. âI suspected as much. Avery loves Ms. Evadne too dearly to harm her.â
Hans, in an uncharacteristic move, asked, âSir, what happens to Thaddeus after taking those pills?â
Alexia was surprised. Hans, usually emotionless, never showed interest in anything.
âIf it were anyone else, I could tell you. But as it's my brother, I can't say for sure,â Chad answered thoughtfully. âThaddeus is unique, with a resilience and strength of will that surpass others. Plus, his love for Ms. Evadne is unmatched. Who knows what will happen? But I hope Ms. Evadne can start anew.â
âSir, whatâs your plan now?â Alexia inquired.
Chad leaned over, gently touching Evadne's nose with a tenderness, as if afraid she might break. âSend Ms. Evadne back.â
âWhat? Send her back?!â Alexia was bewildered. âWhy go to such lengths to bring her here if you never intended to keep her?â
âWhy indeed?â Chad mused, a distant smile on his lips. âPerhaps I just wanted to see her.â
Neither Alexia nor Hans spoke. Chadâs true intentions were always a mystery, making him invulnerable.
