Thaddeus stared in disbelief at the three pills resting in his hand.
A cold dread, born of the unknown, churned and twisted within him, spreading like a poison ivy vine through his chest.
He knew Avery too well. The man was as cunning as a fox, with the heart of a viper. For all Thaddeus knew, every word that had just slipped from Averyâs tongue was nothing more than a cleverly spun web of deceit.
Those pillsâwhoâs to say they werenât filled with poison? Maybe Avery was just looking for the cleanest, most bloodless way to take him out of the picture.
âIf I swallow these, will you let Evadne go?â Thaddeus asked, his voice breaking like dry autumn leaves underfoot, each word like a pebble in his throat.
Averyâs smile was as casual as a Sunday morning, âSure.â
âDo you honestly expect me to believe you? If you want me dead, face me like a man or send your goons. Hell, just shoot me already.â
Thaddeusâs fist met the glass in a furious punch. âDonât think Iâll fall for your cowardly tricks!â
âTwo choices.â Averyâs smile widened, like a Cheshire catâs. âItâs either you or her, Thaddeus. The choice is yours.â
Thaddeusâs heart felt like it was being shredded by a thousand tiny blades. He roared, âAvery! Leave Evadne out of this!â
âThat plea of yours shows youâve chosen already.â Avery picked up one black pill, leaving the other two behind. âJust take one. No need to make this harder than it has to be.â
âAll of them!â Thaddeus shot back, seeing through Averyâs ploy. âIâll do what you want. Just let Evadne go!â
From the start, he knew there was no real choice.
He feared Avery might force some vile concoction down Evadneâs throat or retaliate against her if he resisted too much.
His brothers were already on their way.
By playing along, Thaddeus could buy them more time to rescue Evadne.
Even if it was poison, heâd endure it. He had to.
Thaddeus, youâve got to hold on!
Soon enough, a maid appeared, seemingly out of thin air, with a small pillbox in hand.
âGo on, prove it to me.â Averyâs eyes glinted with a cold excitement behind his gold-rimmed glasses, like a serpent watching its prey.
Thaddeus lowered his eyes, now brimmed with unshed tears, to the three pills in his palm.
Time ticked by, each second stretching into eternity.
Just as Avery was about to unleash a mocking remark, his eyes widened in shockâ
Thaddeus suddenly threw his head back and, without a moment of hesitation, swallowed all three pills in one go!
At that very moment, as if connected by an invisible thread, Evadne, unconscious, fluttered her long lashes, her delicate fingers twitching ever so slightly.
Averyâs pupils dilated in an overwhelming rush.
Nobody knew what kind of reaction Sirâs pills would produce, nor what consequences they might bring.
Yet here was Thaddeus, swallowing them all without fear, without hesitation. Was he truly unafraid?
In that instant, Thaddeus stood as a testament to human resilienceâunyielding, formidable, fearless.
He made every other man seem small, not with arrogance, but with sheer presence.
Avery threw his head back and laughed, a laugh that turned into tears of bitterness.
Until today, he never understood why his love seemed to fall short compared to Thaddeusâs.
Now he finally saw the truthâ
The gap between them was as vast as an ocean.
Even if he spent his entire life trying to bridge it, even if everything reset to the beginningâ
He could never measure up.
Moments later, the pills began to take effect within Thaddeus.
