Arielâs brows furrowed.
âWhy would I be separated from my sister? You said it yourselfâthe great clans would do anything to get me. So⦠why wouldnât they just take Ilya too?â
Arenyaâs eyes dimmed.
âI told you, Ariel. If you join the great clans, war is inevitable. And in war, no one has time to protect anyone elseâs familyâno matter how âvaluableâ you are. Resources will be pulled to the frontlines, and Ilya⦠sheâll be left behind. Vulnerable.â
She paused. âAnd if Iâm being honest, there will be assassination attemptsâon you and her. Before you even get a chance to grow strong.â
Ariel looked down, the weight settling.
âThen what am I supposed to do? It doesnât feel like I have a choice.â
Walter interjected gently.
âDonât forget the governmentâs offer. They can at least guarantee her safetyâand even get her out of this hellhole.â
âBut doctor,â Ariel said, voice cracking, âIâm all Ilya has left. If I leaveâeven just for a few monthsâI donât know whatâll happen. Sheâs only six. Sheâs already lost everything. And I might not even survive out there.â
Walter looked away for a moment, guilt swimming in his eyes.
âWe donât have many options. And it hurts me, truly, to see someone as young as you bearing all this. Eleven years old⦠and forced to make choices most men would crumble under.â
Arenya blinked. âWaitâeleven?â
Walter glanced at her, surprised. âOh. Right. That mightâve slipped your radar. Arielâs actually eleven. He just looks like a grown man due to a rare condition. Accelerated physical growth, but his age⦠itâs real.â
Arenya stared at Ariel in shock.
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
âYouâre telling me this⦠this guy who killed a Phase Four Forsaken is eleven?â
âYeah,â Ariel shrugged. âWeird, right?â
The silence hung for a beat, then Walter coughed.
âAnyway. Back to the important stuff. If you accept the governmentâs offer, Iâll make sure youâre placed under Marikâs squad. Youâll be protected. And Ilya? Sheâll come with me. Iâm heading out with the refugees soon. I have a daughter back home. I think the two of them would get along well. Sheâll be safe, Ariel. I give you my word.â
âThank you, Sir Walter,â Ariel said, finally, softly.
Walter shook his head. âDonât thank me. I feel guilty enough already. I wish I could do more. But what I can do is teach you how to survive.â
Arenya stood and brushed off her uniform.
âWell, my jobâs done. It was nice meeting you, Sir Walter. And you too, little brother,â she added, smirking at Ariel.
Ariel rolled his eyes, but smirked internally. Little brother? What am I now, an honorary heir of the Golden Vow?
Walter called after her, âHey, Arenyaâyouâre staying until the retreat, right?â
âYes. Why?â
âThink you could help him out a bit after I leave? I only have two days left.â
âIâd like to,â she sighed, âbut you know how my schedule looks. Iâm running on borrowed hours already. Sorry.â
âNothing to be sorry for,â Walter smiled. âYouâve already helped more than most.â
âGoodbye, Sir Walter. And goodbye, little brother,â she winked, and disappeared behind the closing door.
Silence settled like ash.
âAlright then,â Walter said, his voice more serious now. âLetâs begin.â
Ariel nodded. âStill hard to let go of the worry. But knowing Ilyaâs in your care⦠it helps.â
âYou and your over-affection,â Walter chuckled. âAlright. We were on ranks. Let me break it down again.
âMonsters and humans both start at Rank 0: Dormant, and both end at Rank 7: Origin. But while humans ascend, monsters corrupt. Some people chase corruption too, and those people become monsters themselves.â
âAnd the Corruption Index?â Ariel asked.
âExactly. The CI is a measurementâtech developed to quantify just how deep the corruption runs. We use it to predict danger levels. The higher the CI, the more unstableâand the more dangerousâa creature becomes.â
âAnd the âphasesâ?â
âPhases are shorthand, easy categories for CI:
Phase 1: CI 0.1 to 0.3
Phase 2: 0.31 to 0.6
Phase 3: 0.61 to 0.9
Phase 4: 0.91 to 1.0
âPhase Fours are terrifying. On the brink of evolvingâchanging into something far worse.â
Ariel shivered. âAnd how do we ascend? How do we grow?â
Walterâs eyes gleamed with something like reverence.
âThrough Origin Seeds. Theyâre like⦠living gates. Unlike standard ones, these seeds are personalized. Inside, youâll face trialsânot always monsters, but fears. Despair. Loss. Yourself. And if you conquer them, the seed blooms, and you awaken.â
âSounds horrifying.â
âIt is. Thatâs why most never survive.â
Ariel looked down at his hands.
âThen Iâll have to be one of the few who do.â
